  • Patent number: 8612172
Abstract: For supporting a relative positioning, information on barometric pressure at a first device and information on barometric pressure at a second device is converted into a difference in altitude between the first device and the second device. The difference in altitude between the first device and the second device is then used in determining a position of the first device relative to the second device.

  • Publication number: 20130288704
Abstract: A system for supporting electronic positioning in apparatuses. Apparatuses may receive various wireless signals over time (800). The strength of the received wireless signals may be determined by the apparatuses (802), and based on this determination an occurrence for each received wireless signal may be accumulated in a histogram in the apparatus (804). Information based on the histogram may then be transmitted to a mapping database (810). The mapping database may then utilize this information to, for example, create signal-based maps for use in apparatus positioning.

  • Patent number: 8564479
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided to allow for the use of existing satellite identification parameters generically, so as to allow for Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) identification. In addition, an optional or conditional parameter is linked to the satellite identification parameter for a frequency identification, where frequency identification is indicative of a Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) frequency value. Such a frequency identification parameter is optional as it is needed only for current GLONASS and/or near-future GLONASS (e.g., GLONASS-M) satellites. Hence, utilization of the frequency identification parameter maybe unnecessary and therefore, not included/not linked when considering next generation GLONASS satellites, e.g., GLONASS-K satellites. Additionally, signals supported by particular global positioning system (GPS) satellites can be indicated with the use of generic satellite identification.

  • Publication number: 20130260771
Abstract: For enhancing the positioning of a mobile device, a server may generate parameters for each of a plurality of models of a coverage area of a transmission node on the assumption of a different spatial constraint for a location of a receiving device. The parameters of each of the models may be provided along with the associated indication of the spatial constraint for transmission. The position of a mobile device may be determined by evaluating the parameters of each of the models.

  • Publication number: 20130227154
Abstract: Session parameters and/or information regarding session parameters are provided to a target device from a location server in a periodic assistance session. For example, the location server starts an unsolicited periodic assistance session, and transmits information indicating the unsolicited assistance session is periodic as well as any relevant session parameters to the target device. The location server may change session parameters “on the fly,” and inform the target device of the modified session parameters. The target device may initiate a session and requests certain parameters, to which the location server responds with an indication as to what parameters the target device will actually receive. Additionally, the target device may modify the session parameters, and the location server can respond to the target indicating whether or not the modification was accepted or if the modification was accepted in a modified form.

  • Publication number: 20130116968
Abstract: A system for creating a representation of a location based on information sensed at the location. For example, apparatuses may comprise various sensors that sense apparatus-related information (e.g., motion, direction, etc.) while also visual, signal, field, etc. information pertaining to a location. Apparatuses may store sensed information about the apparatus while at a particular location, and about the particular location itself, in a mapping database, which may then associate the various types of sensed information with information already stored in the database in order to create a representation of the location.

  • Publication number: 20120289241
Abstract: A system for providing positioning functionality in an apparatus without having to implement dedicated hardware. An apparatus that desires to receive directional information may receive a message from another apparatus (e.g., access point or AP). The AP may operate in various modes that, for example, may provide directional information to other apparatuses as part of a general broadcast (e.g., a wireless local area network, or WLAN, beacon signal) or in response to messages requesting directional information that are received from other apparatuses. After receiving the message from the AP, the apparatus may determine if the message comprises directional information. If the message is determined to comprise directional information, directional information from the received message may be utilized to determine apparatus location. Otherwise, the apparatus may then send a message requesting directional information to the AP, which may prompt the AP to provide directional information.

  • Patent number: 8169364
Abstract: For enhancing the quality of a relative positioning, a filter is adjusted depending on information on a movement of a satellite signal receiver. A position of the satellite signal receiver is determined relative to a reference station using the filter, wherein measurements on satellite signals received by the satellite signal receiver and measurements on satellite signals provided for the reference station are used as input to the filter. The measurements for the reference station may be received in messages which are assembled and provided for transmission and which may include in addition an indication of a current movement of the reference station.

  • Publication number: 20110235655
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided allowing for a vendor-defined payload in a standardized user-plane location solution/protocol, where proprietary extension support is introduced into one or more standardized solutions. In accordance with a first embodiment, a location payload consists of structures for transferring requests, assistance data, measurements and positioning instructions. Therefore, a proprietary extension is included in each of these structures so that, for example, proprietary assistance data can be requested in an appropriate structure. In accordance with another embodiment, a proprietary extension is introduced at the highest abstraction level. For example and in an actual implementation, a vendor can define that in the beginning of the proprietary payload, the proprietary extension is defined, whether the proprietary payload contains a request, assistance, etc.
