  • Patent number: 6577496
Abstract: A foldable display device coupled to a non-rigid support mechanism movable between an unfolded and a folded position. In one embodiment, the e-ink display device is dual sided and both sides can display information as well as accept touch screen commands. One side of the display device is used in the unfolded position and the opposite side is used in the folded position. In the unfolded position, the display device has a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) form factor, and the entire area of one side of the display device is viewable. The display device is supported within the non-rigid support mechanism such that it lies in a flat plane in the unfolded position, and there is no loss of viewable area due to folding of the display device. The two sides of the non-rigid support mechanism are coupled for movement between a folded and an unfolded position and the display device is folded in a bend radius that precludes any disruption to the display area.

  • Publication number: 20030038786
Abstract: A handheld computer is provided that includes a first module and at least a second module. The first module includes a processor and a display. The second module is slideably coupled to the first module so that it functions as a sliding cover that may effectively change the visible area of the underlying display. The handheld computer includes a sensing device coupled to the processor. The sensing device provides information to the processor regarding the relative position of the first module with respect to the second module. The information provided may be used to reconfigure the visual output of the display or to select a macro command presented on the display.

  • Publication number: 20030034987
Abstract: A handheld computer is provided that includes a first module combined with one or more modules. The first module includes a housing having one or more coupling surfaces, with each coupling surface including a coupling mechanism. A second module is coupleable to the first module. The second module includes a third coupling surface having a second coupling mechanism for mating with the first coupling mechanism. The third coupling surface is positioned on the second module so as to abut at least partially against the second coupling surface when the first coupling mechanism is mated with the second coupling mechanism.

  • Patent number: 6505382
Abstract: An improved hinge mechanism for use with a portable computing device is disclosed. According to one aspect, a hinge mechanism includes a first assembly with a pivot connection, a cam follower, and a second assembly. The cam follower is used to produce a cam action. The second assembly includes a cam. The cam follower cooperates with the cam to produce a moment about an axis associated with the latching hinge mechanism. The cam follower and the cam also cooperate to effectively latch the first assembly with respect to the second assembly when the cam is in a first position. According to another aspect, a display screen of the portable computing device can be rotateably-hinged to a base such that the display screen is set back from the base when the display screen is opened.

  • Publication number: 20020180620
Abstract: An electronic device is formed at least partially from a deflectable material that generates an electrical signal in response to contact. The first material is integrated with a display module to provide a shaped feature on the exterior surface of the display module. The shaped feature detects contact with an external object on one or more contact points, where contact with the contact points corresponds to a defined input for a processor of the electronic device.

  • Patent number: 6490155
Abstract: A peripheral device and attachment scheme is provided to enable peripheral devices to be detachably coupled to handheld computers. The attachment scheme enables a peripheral device to be piggy-backed with a handheld computer, with the two devices being connected so that the front face of the peripheral device is adjacent a back surface of the handheld computer. The peripheral attachment scheme includes a moveable latch element that is actuable through insertion of a laterally positioned mechanism. An operator may engage and disengage the latch element with the handheld computer with one hand.

  • Patent number: 6262886
Abstract: The present invention includes a portable computer having improved resistance to scratching, marring and general abuses that include shock and vibration. The computer has a computer housing that includes a display housing and a main housing. A portion integral to one side of the display housing and that portion being proximal to an operating user has an integral layer of translucent elastomer having elastic properties of materials such that of natural rubber. One side of the main housing includes a location for keyboard placement, a palm rest and a cursor-pointing device. Another side of the main housing makes contact with a generally flat surface when the computer is in use. A portion integral to that side of the main housing also includes a layer of translucent elastomer. The configuration of the translucent elastomers on the computer housing is such they cover at least the corners of the portable computer that are proximal to the operating user.
