Patent number: 8374065Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for performing data library background operations. The present invention teaches one or more data storage drives capable of entering a phantom load mode and a library controller capable of initiating the phantom load mode for the data storage drives. The phantom load mode operates to hide the media status of the data storage drives from host computers during background operations involving the data storage drives. In certain embodiments, the data storage drives exit the phantom load mode as a result of a media unload request. In some embodiments, the library controller receives a media load request from a host computer during the background operation and completes the media load request upon completion of the background operation.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 2006Date of Patent: February 12, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Brian Gerard Goodman, Leonard George Jesionowski

Patent number: 8323782Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for forming a stratified cementitious body comprising placing a cementitious slurry comprising a cementitious binder, to form the body in a single pour and curing the slurry to form a stratified cementitious body. The method may also comprise the steps of mixing a cementitious binder and at least one aggregate material with water to form a slurry, pouring the slurry into a mold, allowing the slurry to stratify into layers under the influence of gravitational forces and/or buoyancy forces, optionally applying vibrations to the slurry to encourage the slurry to stratify into layers, and curing the slurry to form a stratified cementitious body.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 2007Date of Patent: December 4, 2012Inventors: Larry Arthur Bellamy, Leonard George McSaveney, James Ronald Mackechnie

Publication number: 20120271888Abstract: An approach for automatically sharing a tape drive in a heterogeneous computing environment that includes a first computer and second computer is presented. The first computer receives a message that includes a shared tape drive identifier, a source port identifier of the second computer, and a reservation status change for the tape drive. Based on the tape drive identifier, the first computer determines that the tape drive is connected to the first computer. The source port identifier is determined to not identify any host bus adapter installed in the first computer. In response to the first computer determining that the reservation status change indicates a reservation or a release of the tape drive for the second computer, the first computer sets the tape drive offline or online, respectively, in an application executing in the first computer.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 2, 2012Publication date: October 25, 2012Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Nils Haustein, Leonard George Jesionowski, Wolfgang Mueller-Friedt, Ulf Troppens

Publication number: 20120239944Abstract: In an automated data storage library, selective encryption for data stored or to be stored on removable media is provided. One or more encryption policies are established, each policy including a level of encryption, one or more encryption keys and the identity of one or more data cartridges. The encryption policies are stored in a policy table and the encryption keys are stored in a secure key server. A host requests access to a specified data cartridge and the cartridge is transported from a storage shelf in the library to a storage drive. Based on the identity of the specified cartridge, the corresponding encryption policy is selected from the table and the appropriate encryption key is obtained from the key server. The storage drive encrypts data in accordance with the key and stores the data on the media within the specified data cartridge.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 4, 2012Publication date: September 20, 2012Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Brian Gerard Goodman, James Arthur Fisher, Leonard George Jesionowski
