  • Publication number: 20180163090
Abstract: A silicone coating process that improves the durability of silicone coatings on the surfaces of surgical needles and other medical devices. The silicone coated surgical needles or medical devices produced by this process have both superior lubricity and durability for ease of repeated and successive passes through tissue. The coating compositions used in the novel process contain an excess amount of polymethylhydrosiloxane cross-linker. After curing, the process utilizes gamma radiation to treat the lubricious coatings. The coatings have improved durability and performance. The penetration performance of needles coated by this novel method remains constant and flat over at least one hundred repeat passes through tissue or tissue simulation media. This provides a consistent or flat tactile response from the needles to the hand of the surgeon during a lengthy closure process, rather than an unpredictably increasing force profile.

  • Publication number: 20170370004
Abstract: A novel method of blackening surgical needles is disclosed. Surgical needles having outer surfaces are first placed into a first pretreatment bath having a novel composition. The needles are then placed into a second blackening bath having a novel composition for a sufficient period of time to effectively blacken the surfaces of the needles. The novel methods for blackening the surfaces of a stainless steel alloy surgical needle provide a chromium (VI)-free alternative to current needle manufacturing processes. Another unique feature of this novel method is its short processing time. The blackening processes of the present invention can be utilized for in-line treatment processes which can be easily incorporated into high speed needle manufacturing processes, such as strip mounted processes. In addition, the processes of the present invention are readily adaptable to batch processes. Also disclosed are novel systems for blackening surgical needles and novel blackening baths for surgical needles.

  • Patent number: 9085102
Abstract: An object is formed on a component with a positive flash shut-off during insert molding operations. The mold has a base with a cavity and a port that delivers a liquid to the cavity. The base has a component support structure for supporting the component and pockets formed on opposite sides of the cavity. The pockets are slightly spaced apart from the cavity by thin partitions. Inserts located in the pockets and are formed from a polymer. Both the partitions and inserts comprise the component support structure. The inserts have a dimension that is smaller than that of the base and partitions so as to form a compression fit around the component to reduce or eliminate flash down the component during the molding process.
