  • Patent number: 7065062
Abstract: In an IP-based Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) 2000 packet-data cellular telecommunications network, a method and system for handing over a dormant Mobile Node (MN) to a target packet zone. According to the invention, first the dormant MN sends an origination request message to the target Base Station Controller and Packet Control Function (BSC/PCF), which further sends a registration request comprising an indication that the MN is dormant to a Packet Data Service Node (PDSN). The PDSN replies to the BSC/PCF with a registration reply message for requesting the establishment of a traffic channel for the MN, and for indicating that it has data packets ready to be sent to the MN, such as for example Link Control Protocol (LCP) data packets for use in the negotiation of a new Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connection. The registration reply message comprises an indication such as for example a Data ready to Sent (DRS) parameter set to 1.

  • Publication number: 20060120287
Abstract: A method and Policy Decision Function node are provided for maintaining a multimedia session in an alive state for a mobile station following a release of a network attachment resulting from a handoff from a first Packet Data Node to a second Packet Data Node followed by a dormancy state of the mobile station. If both Packet Data Nodes are comprised into a same MultiMedia Domain, the Policy Decision Function informs an Application Function of the MultiMedia Domain that the multimedia session shall be maintained. Otherwise, if the two Packet Data Nodes are comprised into distinct MultiMedia Domains, a first Policy Decision Function, in addition to informing a first Application Function that the multimedia session shall be maintained, also fetches a context of the multimedia session. Further, the first Policy Decision Function transfers the context of the multimedia session to the first Packet Data Node, which in turn sends the context of the multimedia session to the second Packet Data Node.

  • Publication number: 20060104282
Abstract: Methods and corresponding telecommunications nodes are provided for exchanging PANA Authentication Agent (PAA) information during the phase of the link layer establishment between a packet data switching node (e.g. a CDMA2000 Packet Data Serving Node—PDSN) and a Mobile Node (MN). An Air Interface Origination message is sent from the MN to a Base Station (BS) with a request for a PAA address. The BS sends to the switching node a Registration Request message that also includes the request. The switching node replies with a Registration Reply message with a PAA address. The BS receives the message, and sends an Air Interface Origination Completion message with the PAA address to the MN. The MN can then contact the appropriate PAA using the received PAA address and start a PANA session through which the MN is authenticated and authorised before establishing a packet data session with the switching node.

  • Patent number: 7043253
Abstract: A system, method and node for supporting PDSN load balancing in a CDMA2000 network. A mobile node (MN) sends an origination message to a BSC/PCF that sends a registration request indicating that it supports load balancing according to the invention to the manager part of a PDSN that selects an agent to take care of the connection and redirects the request to it. The agent then validates the request and sends a reply to the BSC/PCF indicating that the initial request has been redirected. The reply also comprises the IP address of the agent. The BSC/PCF then sets up an A10 connection with the agent, and the MN and the agent negotiate a PPP session. There is further a method of setting up a connection between two entities, via a third entity.

  • Publication number: 20060045128
Abstract: Methods, and Packet Data Service Node (PDSN) and a Base Station Controller (BSC) of a Code-Division Multiple Access 2000 (CDMA2000) network for exchanging Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) frames that contain downlink IP packets, wherein the frames also contain an identity of the IP flows on which they are to be mapped. The PDSN receives IP data packets destined to an IP address, identifies an IP flow on which the IP packets are to be mapped, encapsulates the IP data packets in GRE frames, and adds to each one of the GRE frames the IP flow Id on which the IP packets are to be mapped. The BSC receives GRE frames, identifies the identity of the IP flow in the GRE frames, determines the Quality of Service (QoS) associated with the identified IP flow, and acts to enforce the determined QoS for the identified IP flow.

  • Patent number: 6999449
Abstract: A system and method for monitoring and reporting a volume of data transferred between a Mobile Station (MS) and a data network during a data session. A Prepaid Server (PPS) maintains an MS account and informs a AAA Server of a predetermined volume of data that may be transferred during the session. A Packet Data Service Node (PDSN) sends interim accounting messages to the AAA Server which determines when the predetermined volume of data has been transferred, and notifies the PPS. When the account balance goes below a threshold volume, the data session is terminated. During handoff of the MS from a first PDSN to a second PDSN, a data tunnel is established between them. When the handoff is complete, the tunnel is torn down. The first PDSN reports the volume of data transferred through the tunnel to the second PDSN which reports the volume to the AAA Server.

  • Patent number: 6990088
Abstract: The invention relates to an improved handoff method for mobile IP in a cdma2000 network. During handoff, the A10 connection between the Target PCF and the PDSN is pre-set-up, while the MS is still connected to a MSC, when the Target PCF receives the message from the Target BSC to set up the A8 connection. Furthermore, in the case of inter-PDSN handoff, a tunnel is established between the PDSNs, over which the PPP context eventually is transferred to the Target PDSN. The Target PDSN then sends a message to the MS triggering a re-registration with the HA. The Target PDSN takes over full responsibility for the MS when it receives the Mobile IP Result from the HA, and sends a message to the Serving PDSN to let the latter know that it can release all resources related to the MS.

  • Publication number: 20060002351
Abstract: A method and a packet data switching node such as for example a CDMA2000 Packet data Serving Node (PDSN) for assigning an IP address to a Mobile Node (MN) in a telecommunications network. The switching node and the MN are first involved in a discovery phase, then the MN sends a Protocol for Carrying Authentication for Network Access (PANA) Start-Answer message to the switching node with an indication that an IP address is requested. The indication may comprise, for example, a blank IP address. The switching node receives the PANA Start-Answer message and recognises the request for an IP address. It authenticates the MN, possibly in combination with an Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA) server, and if the authentication is successful, assigns a new IP address to the MN, and responds back to the MN with a PANA Bind-Request message comprising the assigned IP address.

  • Publication number: 20060002426
Abstract: A method, a telecommunications node, and a Protocol for Carrying Authentication for Network Access (PANA) Authentication Agent (PAA) of an IP-based network such as a CDMA2000 telecommunications network are provided for negotiating packet data header compression mechanisms. A first and second node, which may be, for example, a Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN) and a Mobile Node (MN) are first involved in a discovery phase. Then the PDSN sends a PANA Start-Request message to the MN with a list of supported header compression mechanisms. The MN receives the PANA Start-Request message with the list, and selects one or more supported mechanism from the list. The MN then responds back to the PDSN with the selected one or more header compression mechanisms via a PANA Start-Answer message.

  • Publication number: 20060002557
Abstract: A method, a packet data switching node such as for example a CDMA2000 Packet data Serving Node (PDSN), and a Mobile Node (MN) for assigning one or more DNS IP addresses to the MN in a telecommunications network. The switching node and the MN are first involved in a discovery phase, and then the MN sends a Protocol for Carrying Authentication for Network Access (PANA) Start-Answer message to the switching node with a request for a DNS IP address. The switching node receives the PANA Start-Answer message and recognizes the request for the DNS IP address. It authenticates the MN, possibly in combination with an Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA) server, and if the authentication is successful, assigns a primary DNS IP address and a secondary DNS IP address for the MN, and responds back to the MN with a PANA Bind-Request message comprising one or more assigned DNS IP addresses.

  • Patent number: 6970693
Abstract: A method and system for providing alternative prepaid service when a serving Packet Data Service Node (PDSN) does not support prepaid or at least the type of prepaid (duration-based or volume-based) the user has subscribed to. The serving PDSN sends an access request to a Home Authorization, Authentication & Accounting Prepaid Server (HAAA/PPS) with an indication of its capability to support prepaid service and to terminate sessions based on requests from remote nodes. When the serving PDSN is neither capable of prepaid service, nor does it support session termination by a remote node, the HAAA/PPS determines that a prepaid session is allowed and supported in combination with a Home Agent (HA) for duration-based prepaid service. When the PDSN is not prepaid capable but supports session termination capability, the HAAA/PPS determines that any type of prepaid service can be allowed and supported by the HAAA/PPS in combination with the HA.

  • Publication number: 20050251681
Abstract: An authentication server (e.g., AAA server) is described herein which is located in a CDMA2000 network and used to authenticate a user terminal that is connected to a non-CDMA2000 network. The authentication server receives an access request for authenticating the user terminal connected to the non-CDMA2000 network. Then, it obtains a root secret key shared between the user terminal and the CDMA2000 network and generates a GSM or UMTS-like authentication vector which is used to authenticate the user terminal according to a GSM or UMTS-like authentication method. The access of the terminal to the non-CDMA2000 network is granted upon successful authentication. According to embodiments of the invention, the non-CDMA2000 network can be a WLAN network, and the authentication methods used can be EAP SIP or EAP AKA. The present invention allows one to use authentication servers that were originally intended for WLAN-3GPP interworking scenarios also in WLAN-CDMA2000 network interworking.

  • Publication number: 20050195787
Abstract: A system and method for optimizing the use of packet-resources by releasing a hanging packet-data connection when a Mobile Station (MS) performs a power-down while involved in a dormant packet-data session. A Base Station Controller (BSC) sends a message to a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) indicating that the MS has powered down. The MSC determines that the packet-data session is dormant, and sends an instruction to the BSC in a class-0 connectionless transaction to release network resources associated with the packet-data session. The BSC then sends an instruction to a Packet Control Function (PCF) to tear down the associated resources, and the packet-data connection is released by a Packet Data Service Node (PDSN) in response to the tearing down of the resources by the PCF.
