  • Publication number: 20030039259
Abstract: The present invention relates to a traffic flow template for indicating preferred treatment of a service instance. For doing so, the table provides at least one packet filter, and an IP address associated with the packet filter. Each of the at least one packet filter includes packet filter attributes and an associated packet filter identifier. A terminal manages the packet filters. The terminal manages packet filter identifiers, manages evaluation precedence indexes of the packet filters, creates a packet filter content, and associates the packet filter to a current IP address of the terminal. The traffic flow template is stored at a packet data serving node (PDSN). The PDSN receives a pattern update request message from a terminal, and uses an evaluation precedence index to look up for a packet filter match the pattern update request message.

  • Publication number: 20020176382
Abstract: An inter-working function in a second generation wireless network is used as a transition node for provision of packet-data services by a packet-data service node located in a third generation network. Mobile stations operating in the second generation network that request packet-data services are connected to the packet-data service node via the inter-working function, wherein the inter-working function extends a point-to-point protocol connection between the mobile station and the packet-data service node. In the event that the mobile station roams between the second generation and the third generation networks, either dormant or hard handoff procedures can be employed that allow a previously-established point-to-point protocol connection to be reused without being renegotiated following the handoff.

  • Publication number: 20020167909
Abstract: The present invention relates to a system, a method and a service node for providing a pre-paid service to a mobile station for data transmission in a packet data cellular telecommunication network. A connection is established between the mobile station and the service node in the packet data cellular telecommunication network. Upon establishment of the connection, at least one pre-paid connection limit parameter is obtained from a subscriber account database. The at least one pre-paid connection limit parameter is indicative of a limit at which the connection must be terminated. Then, the service node monitors the connection to determine whether the data transmission exceeds the at least one pre-paid connection limit parameter. If the data transmission exceeds the at least one pre-paid connection limit parameter, the connection is terminated.

  • Publication number: 20020141361
Abstract: In a cellular telecommunications network, a method and system for performing dormant hand-off for a dormant Mobile Node (MN) between a source packet zone an a target packet zone, when the MN still has an active A10 and Point-to Point Protocol (PPP) connection in the target packet zone. According to the method, when handed-off, the MN issues an origination request with a Data Ready to Sent (DRS) parameter set to zero for the target Base Station Controller (BSC-T) which responsive to the request further sends an A9-setup-A8 registration request to a target Packet Control Function (PCF-T). The PCF-T then sends an A-11 Registration Request message to a Packet Data Service Node (PDSN-T) of the target packet zone. Responsive to the receipt of the Registration request, the PDSN-T sends an agent advertisement message to the MN and initiates the Mobile IP (MIP) registration procedure, and the MN can register the care-of-address information relating to the new serving PDSN, the PDSN-T, with its Home Agent (HA).

  • Publication number: 20020114440
Abstract: A system and method for providing portability of internet addressing maintains additional IP addressing information in number portability databases located throughout provider domains in a telecommunications network. This additional IP addressing information, in conjunction with additional Number Portability Request messaging information, permits portability of addresses across telecommunication and data communication networks in a transparent fashion.

  • Publication number: 20020114293
Abstract: In an IP-based Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) 2000 packet-data cellular telecommunications network, a method and system for handing over a dormant Mobile Node (MN) to a target packet zone. According to the invention, first the dormant MN sends an origination request message to the target Base Station Controller and Packet Control Function (BSC/PCF), which further sends a registration request comprising an indication that the MN is dormant to a Packet Data Service Node (PDSN). The PDSN replies to the BSC/PCF with a registration reply message for requesting the establishment of a traffic channel for the MN, and for indicating that it has data packets ready to be sent to the MN, such as for example Link Control Protocol (LCP) data packets for use in the negotiation of a new Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connection. The registration reply message comprises an indication such as for example a Data ready to Sent (DRS) parameter set to 1.

  • Publication number: 20020046277
Abstract: A system and method for monitoring and reporting a volume of data transferred between a Mobile Station (MS) and a data network during a data session. A Prepaid Server (PPS) maintains an MS account and informs a AAA Server of a predetermined volume of data that may be transferred during the session. A Packet Data Service Node (PDSN) sends interim accounting messages to the AAA Server which determines when the predetermined volume of data has been transferred, and notifies the PPS. When the account balance goes below a threshold volume, the data session is terminated. During handoff of the MS from a first PDSN to a second PDSN, a data tunnel is established between them. When the handoff is complete, the tunnel is torn down. The first PDSN reports the volume of data transferred through the tunnel to the second PDSN which reports the volume to the AAA Server.

  • Publication number: 20020021681
Abstract: The invention relates to an improved handoff method for mobile IP in a cdma2000 network. During handoff, the A10 connection between the Target PCF and the PDSN is pre-set-up, while the MS is still connected to a MSC, when the Target PCF receives the message from the Target BSC to set up the A8 connection. Furthermore, in the case of inter-PDSN handoff, a tunnel is established between the PDSNs, over which the PPP context eventually is transferred to the Target PDSN. The Target PDSN then sends a message to the MS triggering a re-registration with the HA. The Target PDSN takes over full responsibility for the MS when it receives the Mobile IP Result from the HA, and sends a message to the Serving PDSN to let the latter know that it can release all resources related to the MS.

  • Publication number: 20010050907
Abstract: A system and method for optimizing the use of packet-resources by releasing a hanging packet-data connection when a Mobile Station (MS) performs a power-down while involved in a dormant packet-data session. A Base Station Controller (BSC) sends a message to a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) indicating that the MS has powered down. The MSC determines that the packet-data session is dormant, and sends an instruction to the BSC in a class-0 connectionless transaction to release network resources associated with the packet-data session. The BSC then sends an instruction to a Packet Control Function (PCF) to tear down the associated resources, and the packet-data connection is released by a Packet Data Service Node (PDSN) in response to the tearing down of the resources by the PCF.

  • Patent number: 6108518
Abstract: A method of paging for a mobile station operating in a radio telecommunications network having a serving mobile switching center (MSC), a home location register (HLR), and a plurality of border MSCs. The method comprises the steps of paging for the mobile station in the serving MSC, and sending an intersystem paging message from the serving MSC to each of the plurality of border MSCs. The intersystem paging message includes an instruction to page the mobile station, an indication of a number of page attempts to perform, and an indication of a page response time for each page attempt. A total page response time is calculated in the serving MSC by taking into account the entry time of a Routing Request Invoke message, the signaling delay in the border system, the average time for designation of a voice channel, and an additional average time for transferring the call to voice mail in the event of a no page response condition.

  • Patent number: 6070080
Abstract: A method of announcing to a calling party in an originating system in a radio telecommunications network that a called party in a serving system is not available. The method begins by sending a Routing Request (RoutReq) Invoke message from the originating system to the serving system. The RoutReq Invoke message includes a Transaction Capabilities parameter indicating that the originating system is capable of generating announcements. The serving system then determines that the called party is not available. This is followed by sending a Redirection Request (RedReq) Invoke message from the serving system to the originating system. The RedReq Invoke message includes an Announcement List parameter requesting the originating system to provide an announcement to the calling party, and may include a Preferred Language parameter. The RedReq Invoke message also includes an Allow Transfer to Number parameter if the called party subscribes to services requiring service logic support.
