  • Publication number: 20020102405
Abstract: The present invention provides articles resistant to the adsorption of proteins, cells and bacteria. The articles can either have a chemical chain bonded thereon where the chemical chain can comprise a terminal group free of a hydrogen bond donor or where a hydrogen bond donor is sufficiently buried such that an exposed surface of the article including the chemical chain is free of a hydrogen bond donor. The chemical chain, or plurality of chemical chains, can comprise a monolayer such as a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) which can be homogeneous (one type of SAM) or mixed, i.e. or more different types of SAMs. Other more specific examples of chemical chains are provided. The plurality of chemical chains can comprise a polymer such as a polyamine. In many aspects, the plurality of chemical chains is sufficiently free of cross-linking or branching. The present invention also provides an article capable of specific binding of a desired biomolecule while preventing non-specific binding of biomolecules.

  • Patent number: 6395685
Abstract: Improved Hg-containing superconducting films and thermoelectric materials are provided. The films are fabricated by annealing starting Tl-containing films (e.g., Tl-1212 or Tl-2212) in an Hg-vapor environment so as to cause a substitution of Tl by Hg without substantial alteration of the crystalline structure of the starting films. Preferably, a body comprising a substrate having an epitaxial Tl-containing film thereon is annealed under vacuum conditions with a Hg-based bulk; typical annealing conditions are 600-900° C. for a period of from about 1-20 hours. The final Hg-containing film products have a Jc of at least about 106 A/cm2 (100 K, OT) and a Xmin of up to about 50%. The thermoelectric materials are prepared by perturbing a crystalline precursor having a structure similar to the final material so as to cause a first molecule to be released from the precursor.

  • Patent number: 6238864
Abstract: Provided herein is an assay for the detection of an analyte and a method therefore. The assay and method depend upon detecting the binding of an analyte to a capturing agent positioned on DNA through the production of a reporter. The assay and the method of the invention are simple because the assay can be conducted in a single tube, sensitive because concentrations of both the activator complex and the DNA construct drive the analyte-recognition reaction, and readily adaptable for automation.

  • Patent number: 5700916
Abstract: The invention relates to methods that permit the rapid construction of oligosaccharides and other glycoconjugates. Methods for forming multiple glycosidic linkages in solution in a single step are disclosed. The invention takes advantage of the discovery that the relative reactivity of glycoside residues containing anomeric sulfoxides and nucleophilic functional groups can be controlled. In another aspect of the invention, the reactivity of activated anomeric sugar sulfoxides is utilized in a solid phase method for the formation of glycosidic linkages. The methods disclosed may be applied to the preparation of specific oligosaccharides and other glycoconjugates, as well as to the preparation of glycosidic libraries comprising mixtures of various oligosaccharides, including glycoconjugates, which can be screened for biological activity.
