  • Patent number: 8597245
Abstract: A medical injector is provided herein which includes first and second body portions each having a longitudinal axis and configured to couple at a coupling. The first and second body portions are complementarily formed so as to be movable about the coupling. The medical injector also includes an axially-displaceable plunger; biasing element for advancing the plunger a predetermined distance; and, a releasable retainer for releasably retaining the plunger in a first state against the force of the biasing element. In an initial state, the axes of the first and second body portions are not aligned and the plunger is in the first state. In a coupled state, the axes of the first and second body portions are axially aligned, and the releasable retainer releases the plunger, thereby allowing the biasing element to advance the plunger the predetermined distance.

  • Patent number: 8556862
Abstract: A medical injector is provided herein having a body and a needle mounting surface movable relative to the body, the needle mounting surface having features for mounting a needle thereto. In an initial state, the needle mounting surface is disposed within the body with no needle mounted thereto. With relative movement between the body and the needle mounting surface, the needle mounting surface is urged out of the body. Advantageously, a medical injector is provided which ensures proper sequence in preparation of the device, particularly with respect to the step of allowing mounting of a medical needle to the device subsequent to preparation of the medicament to be administered.

  • Publication number: 20130245559
Abstract: In one aspect of the subject invention, a drug delivery device is provided which includes a reservoir for containing a medicament and has a proximal end and a distal end, the medicament including a suspension of solids in a liquid carrier. Further, the drug delivery device includes a needle in fluid communication with the reservoir and having a distal end for injection into a patient, and a proximal end in the reservoir. An accumulation surface is defined at least partially about the needle, distally of the proximal end of the needle. The accumulation surface defines a distally-extending indentation which is sized and shaped to collect, during use, solids that come out of suspension. Advantageously, with the subject invention, the accumulation surface allows for solids to accumulate at a location spaced from the proximal end of the needle, thereby minimizing the possibility of clogging the needle.

  • Patent number: 8512287
Abstract: A system and method for a patch-like, self-contained substance infusion device which provides one or more substantially hidden patient needles which can be placed in fluid communication with a fluid reservoir, wherein the device can be attached to a skin surface via an adhesive contact surface and a push button activation assembly can then be used to remove an interlock, allowing a disk, or Belleville spring assembly to apply an essentially even and constant pressure to the contents of the fluid reservoir, allow the release of the patient needles into the skin surface, and establish a fluid communication path between the patient needles and the pressurized fluid reservoir contents. The push button activation assembly further allows the release of one or more improved safety mechanisms after use.

  • Patent number: 8500682
Abstract: A medical injector is provided herein having a body; a reservoir containing first and second mixable component; a stopper; a plunger; a spring disposed to advance the plunger; a first releasable retainer for releasably retaining the plunger in a first state against force of the spring; a first trigger for causing the first releasable retainer to release the plunger; a second releasable retainer for releasably retaining the plunger in a second state against force of the spring; and, a second trigger for causing the second releasable retainer to release the plunger. The spring causes the plunger to advance so that the stopper traverses at least a predetermined extent of advancement thereby causing mixing of the first and second mixable components. Advantageously, with the subject invention, a medical injector is provided which allows for autoreconstitution with subsequent dose setting and autoplunger activation being activated by separate triggers.

  • Patent number: 8444604
Abstract: A system and method for a patch-like, self-contained substance infusion device (700) which can be attached to a skin surface via an adhesive contact surface. A push button (780) activation assembly can then be used to remove an interlock (730), allowing a disk or Belleville spring (735) assembly to apply an essentially even and constant pressure to the contents of a fluid reservoir assembly (710). This allows the release of one or more spring-loaded patient needles (760) into the skin surface, and establishes a fluid communication path between the patient needles (760) and the pressurized fluid reservoir contents thereby delivering an infusion into the skin. The push button (780) activation assembly further allows the release of one or more improved safety mechanisms (794) after use.

  • Publication number: 20130110049
Abstract: The subject invention provides a drug delivery device for injecting medicament which includes: a tubular reservoir; a stopper slidably disposed in the reservoir; a spring for moving the stopper in the reservoir; at least one needle, the needle having a distal end for insertion into a patient, and a lumen extending proximally from the distal end, the lumen being in direct or indirect communication with the reservoir; a needle driver for displacing the needle; and, an actuator. Activation of the actuator causes the spring to move the stopper and the needle driver to displace the needle. The needle moves relative to, and separately from, the reservoir with the needle being displaced. Advantageously, with the subject invention, a drug delivery device is provided wherein a needle is moved, relative to the reservoir, in being displaced for injection. This permits control of the needle displacement separate from the reservoir.

  • Patent number: 8403883
Abstract: A medical injector is provided herein having a body and a reservoir disposed in the body, the reservoir including at least first and second mixable components. At least one stopper is associated with the reservoir where distal advancement of the stopper over a predetermined distance causes mixing of the mixable components. A plunger is disposed in the body, along with a knob stem and a knob fixed to the knob stem so as to be rotatable therewith. A sleeve is telescopingly disposed over the knob stem, wherein the knob stem and the sleeve have cooperating elements formed thereon which selectively permit rotation of the knob stem to be transmitted to the sleeve so that the knob stem and the sleeve may rotate together. A spring is also provided for urging the sleeve distally. A releasable retainer releasably retains the sleeve against force of the spring. Rotation of the knob releases the sleeve and allows the spring to displace the sleeve distally.

  • Patent number: 8323238
Abstract: A medical injector is provided herein which includes first and second body portions rotatably coupled together; a displaceable plunger disposed in at least one of the first and second body portions; a spring disposed to advance the plunger; and, a releasable retainer for retaining the plunger in a first portion against force of the spring. The releasable retainer releases the plunger upon a predetermined extent of relative rotation between the first and second body portions, thus allowing the spring to advance the plunger. Advantageously, the subject invention provides a medical injector having an automated plunger drive which is triggered upon rotation of injector body portions, thereby minimizing premature or failed activations.

  • Patent number: 8262641
Abstract: A filling system for syringes utilizing short needles to be filled from a vial having a thick septum is described. The system may be useful in any situation where the septum or vial stopper of a medication container is thicker than the usable length of the needle on the delivery device. Preferably, the syringe is filled just prior to use. The short needle includes an optional limiter which only permits a certain predetermined length of the needle cannula to protrude beyond the limiter a distance which limits penetration of the needle tip into both the skin and a vial stopper. The system and adapter may be useful for needles having a protrusion distance from approximately 0.5 mm to 3 mm, or any needle with a protrusion length shorter that the thickness of a septum to be accessed. Furthermore, a device is provided with shielding capabilities to shield the needle of the device.
