  • Publication number: 20120218922
Abstract: Certain aspects of the present disclosure propose techniques for independently signaling features supported by a user equipment (UE) in different duplexing modes. The UE may be capable of communicating in frequency division duplexing (FDD) and time division duplexing (TDD) modes. The UE may obtain a FDD-specific feature group indicators (FGIs) set and a TDD-specific FGIs set, and signal at least one of the FDD-specific FGIs set or TDD-specific FGIs set. In addition, the UE may take one or more actions to reduce the likelihood of transitioning to a mode of operation that is different from its current mode of operation.

  • Patent number: 8228935
Abstract: Systems, methodologies, and devices are described that enable communication devices, such as mobile devices, to efficiently connect and communicate with public data networks (PDNs) even if overlapping Internet protocol address spaces exist in the PDNs. The subject innovation can employ virtual home agents (v-HAs) that can respectively serve PDNs. To facilitate connection of a mobile device to a desired PDN, a message, including an identifier relating to the desired PDN, can be transmitted to a v-HA and it can be discovered whether that v-HA serves the desired PDN; if so, the v-HA transmits the message to a “home” home agent (h-HA) associated with the desired PDN; and if not, the v-HA can transmit a switch message indicating the correct v-HA to which the message should be sent. Concatenation of communication tunnels associated with the correct v-HA and h-HA facilitate efficient communication associated with the mobile device and desired PDN.

  • Patent number: 8208388
Abstract: Method for segmented message transmission wherein each message is first divided into segments and the segments are fragmented. A segment parameter is applied to each segment, and a segment identifier to each fragment. The fragments are provided to a lower level for preparation into frames for transmission. One embodiment is applied to the transmission of short duration messages, such as control messages. A timer is used to detect an erasure within a plurality of transmission frames, wherein the timer uses an average inter-arrival time period between transmitted frames to determine a missing frame. In one embodiment, the time period is given as ?*AIT, wherein ? is a constant value, and AIT is the average inter-arrival time of frames.

  • Patent number: 8208925
Abstract: An inter-system handover system for a wireless communication system supports hand-down and hand-up of user equipment (UE) to different radio access technologies, including synchronous and asynchronous systems. Latency and handover connection failures are reduced by an access node (nodeB) broadcasting information about neighboring systems (targets) when the UE reception (RX) capability is both inside or outside the reception range of the target. A single RX chain is sufficient, although transitioning between a wireless wide area network (WWAN) to a wireless local area network may (WLAN) may advantageously benefit from simultaneous operation on two Rx chains. Optimized list of neighboring RAT systems (targets) are broadcast from the network, including measurement parameters and reporting instructions. Thereby, UE-driven reporting minimizes latencies. UE reports other-system searches to network only if needed for a handover.

  • Patent number: 8170047
Abstract: Techniques for transmitting data and training sequence efficiently using new slot and block formats are described. A transmitter processes (e.g., encodes, interleaves, and partitions) a data block to obtain multiple output blocks. For each output block, the transmitter generates multiple bursts having a training sequence that is shared by these bursts. The transmitter sends the multiple bursts for each output block in multiple time slots, e.g., consecutive time slots in one frame. The multiple bursts for each output block may (1) include one or more short training sequences, (2) omit guard periods between adjacent bursts, (3) include a first tail bit field at the start of the first burst and a second tail bit field at the end of the last burst, (4) include at least one stealing flag field, or (5) have any combination of the above.

  • Patent number: 8169953
Abstract: A Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network supports multi-carrier operation on the downlink and/or uplink for a mobile station. The mobile station receives an assignment of multiple carriers for a first link in the GSM network, receives an assignment of at least one carrier for a second link in the GSM network, and exchanges data with the GSM network via the multiple carriers for the first link and the at least one carrier for the second link. The first link may be the downlink and the second link may be the uplink, or vice versa. The mobile station may receive data on multiple carriers at the same time for multi-carrier operation on the downlink. The mobile station may transmit data on multiple carriers at the same time for multi-carrier operation on the uplink.

  • Patent number: 8155020
Abstract: Techniques for supporting policy control and charging (PCC) functions in a wireless communication network are described. In one design, a Policy Control and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) may receive a request from a first network entity (e.g., a home agent) to establish a PCC session for a user equipment (UE) accessing the first network entity using a mobility protocol (e.g., Mobile IP). The PCRF may determine the mobility protocol used by the UE based on an IP-CAN Type parameter included in the request. The PCRF may determine PCC rules for the PCC session based on the mobility protocol and may send the PCC rules to the first network entity. The first network entity may apply the PCC rules on packets for the PCC session and may count each packet for charging. A second network entity may forward the packets but would not count these packets for charging.

  • Patent number: 8145228
Abstract: In a communication system (100), a method and apparatus provide for efficient control of call requests from mobile stations (102-104) to base station (101). Mobile station (102-104) receives an initial call request block probability from base station (101), determines an elapsed time from an effective time of the initial call request block probability, and adjusts the initial call request block probability based on an elapsed time. Mobile station (102-104) uses the adjusted initial call request to block call request.

  • Publication number: 20120069796
Abstract: In a particular embodiment, a method of providing redundancy for error recovery in multi-carrier wireless communications includes transmitting a primary version of information via a first carrier, transmitting a first portion of a redundancy version of the information via a second carrier, and transmitting a second portion of the redundancy version of the information via a third carrier. The primary version is encoded using a first encoding scheme and the redundancy version is encoded using a second encoding scheme. The primary version, the first portion, and the second portion are transmitted substantially simultaneously.

  • Publication number: 20120014268
Abstract: A control scheme using packet headers allows GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) systems to increase spectral efficiency through multiplexing techniques, such as superposition coding, multi-user packet transmission, joint detection, and/or joint decoding. A fast feedback scheme for GERAN allows Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) frames to be transmitted over GERAN air interfaces without excessive feedback latency. As a result, Hybrid Automatic Repeat-reQuest (H-ARM) acknowledgements may be timely provided for end-to-end VoIP calls that traverse GERAN air interfaces. Additionally, Incremental Redundancy H-ARQ and link quality feedback latencies are decreased.

  • Patent number: 8098818
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for secure registration for a multicast-broadcast-multimedia system (MBMS) are disclosed. A random number is generated by a broadcast-multicast-service center (BM-SC) and broadcast to user equipment in the coverage area of a radio access network (RAN). A memory module or smart card (UICC) in the user equipment generates a radio access network key (RAK) which is a function of the random number and a key selected from the group consisting of a public land mobile network key (PK) and a broadcast access key (BAK), and then generates a temporary registration key (RGK) as a function of the RAK, a service identification number and a user identification number, for example, P-TMSI, which may be extracted by the RAN to authenticate the registration as legitimate.
