  • Publication number: 20040221125
Abstract: Various copy-on-write implementations for a computing environment are presented. One copy-on-write implementation includes employing a read mapping table to perform a first virtual block to physical block mapping for use in reading a block of data of a file to be copy-on-written from physical storage for modification; and employing a different, write mapping table to perform a second virtual block to physical block mapping for use in writing a modified block of the file data to physical storage, wherein copy-on-write of the block of data is achieved using a single write operation. In another implementation, a distributed copy-on-write of a file for a client server environment is presented. This distributed copy-on-write includes performing, by a first client, copy-on-write of at least one block of data of the file to be copy-on-written, and performing, by a second client, copy-on-write of at least one other block of data of the file, wherein multiple clients perform the copy-on-write of the file.

  • Patent number: 6779025
Abstract: An application server, configured for executing a messaging application defined by XML documents, is able to provide messaging services to a calling party for a remote subscriber based on retrieval of subscriber attribute information obtained from a remote information database server (such as LDAP) via an Internet Protocol (IP) network. The application server, upon receiving a voice application operation request having subscriber identifier information from a browser serving the calling party, obtains from the remote information database server attribute information for responding to the voice application operation request based on the subscriber identifier information. The application server generates an HTML document having media content and control tags for personalized execution of the voice application operation based on the attribute information obtained from the standardized database server.

  • Publication number: 20040123276
Abstract: The present invention provides methods for facilitating the sharing of data structures in a software application written using both a high level programming language and assembly language. Methods are provided for defining a data structure in an assembly language program such that the data structure is created in exact conformance to the physical and logical memory layout mandated for a comparable data structure by a compiler for a high level language. Such methods comprise providing assembly language directives that cause the assembler to automatically adapt a data structure definition to the alignment constraints imposed by the high level language compiler.

  • Publication number: 20040097945
Abstract: A bioabsorbable interference screw having a tapered profile which extends along substantially the entire length of the screw. The tapered profile makes the screw easy to insert while providing superior fixation resulting from a progressively increasing diameter. Upon insertion, the screw engages cortical bone at the back end of the bone tunnel and fills all but 5-10 mm. of the tunnel, thereby providing increased fixation strength while also promoting fast healing. The screw includes a head provided with a specially designed drive socket with radially extending slots at its outer end for receiving corresponding protrusions on the shaft of screwdriver. The drive socket optimizes the torque capacity of the screw. To maintain wall thickness, the socket has a taper corresponding to the tapered outer profile of the screw. The taper of the socket also permits easy insertion of the tip and shaft of the driver into the screw.

  • Publication number: 20040086687
Abstract: A thin film keypad includes a retainer sheet and a plurality of keycaps molded onto keycap attachment regions on the retainer sheet such that the keys are mechanically secured to the retainer sheet. The retainer sheet is made of a thin film material, such as polycarbonate or polyester, and each keycap attachment region includes at least a hole and/or at least one retainer anchor portion. The keycaps are molded from a plastic material, such as polycarbonate or polyester, ABS or a polycarbonate/ABS blend. The thin film material is placed in a molding tool and the plastic material is injected into a keycap mold cavity such that the plastic material flows through the holes and/or around the retainer anchor portions, thereby anchoring the keycaps to the retainer sheet.

  • Publication number: 20040052412
Abstract: A computer implemented method analyzes and evaluates data and identifies disparate features. The data may be mass spectra, images of microarrays or images of 2D electrophoresis gels, where the data is based upon two patients or groups of patients, one healthy and the other having a disorder. The images may also be satellite images taken of a single region, the images compared to identify disparate features such as oil fires in Iraq during the 2003 Gulf War.

  • Publication number: 20040006622
Abstract: A method, system, and computer program product for facilitating data transfers from a source node group to a target node group. In one embodiment of the invention, a source node selection request is sent to the source node group. The node selection request includes a data transfer session identifier. A source master node belonging to the source node group is configured to route the node selection request to a sending node using a predefined source node selection policy. A target node selection request is sent from the data sending node to the target node group. A target master node belonging to the target node group is configured to route the request to a receiving node using a predefined target node selection policy. The selection policies may include choosing the least loaded node in the data receiving node group.

  • Patent number: 6650217
Abstract: A planar magnetic winding structure such as a transformer or inductor having an air gap in the core has a “keep away” region of 2 to 3 times the gap height in which there are no windings, reducing high frequency winding losses by 35 percent or more, without appreciable increases in low frequency winding losses. Such structures are useful, for example, in electronic ballasts for the lighting industry.

  • Publication number: 20030104571
Abstract: A plurality of proteins of interest, or peptides of interest, or other genetically expressed materials, are screened and subsequently produced using any of a variety of expression systems. The plurality of proteins are extracted from a plurality of separate, processed green juices, each green juice containing one of the proteins of interest. A multi-channel apparatus processes the various green juices, one green juice per channel. The apparatus is computer controlled such that the various valves in each channel and pump are controlled in an automated manner to extract each protein of interest and deliver each protein of interest into its own storage vessel.

  • Publication number: 20030018527
Abstract: A method for presenting advertising in an interactive service provided on a computer network, the service featuring applications which include pre-created, interactive text/graphic sessions is described. The method features steps for presenting advertising concurrently with service applications at the user terminal configured as a reception system. In accordance with the method, the advertising is structured in a manner comparable to the service applications enabling the applications to be presented at a first portion of a display associated with the reception system and the advertising presented at a second portion. Further, steps are provided for storing and managing advertising at the user reception system so that advertising can be pre-fetched from the network and staged anticipation of being called for presentation.

  • Patent number: 6507817
Abstract: A web-based voice messaging system uses an application server, configured for executing a voice application defined by XML documents, that accesses subscriber attributes from a standardized information database server (such as LDAP), and messages from a standardized messaging server (such as IMAP). The application server, upon receiving a request from a browser serving a subscriber, accesses an IP based messaging server to obtain a stored message for the subscriber from a second party. The stored message identifies a text-based form. The application server converts the text-based form into an audible format. The application server generates an HTML document to present to the subscriber the form in audible format with audible prompts, based on the HTTP request and the text-based form. The application server then updates the text-based form based on an input from the subscriber. Thus, text-based forms can be retrieved and acted on via a telephone.
