  • Patent number: 7016322
Abstract: A wireless communications system includes a core packet network coupled to multiple base transceiver stations, each station providing wireless services to mobile units. The system supports simultaneous, parallel, wireless communications links between a mobile unit and multiple base transceiver stations by selecting between copies of packets received by each base transceiver station. Thus, the system includes devices for selecting between multiple copies of each packet received from a mobile unit.

  • Patent number: 6980808
Abstract: A floating call anchor is used to improve the efficiency of utilization of wireless and backhaul resources in cellular communication systems. For conditions under which soft handoff can be effectively used to conserve wireless resources, data transmitted from a first mobile unit (MU) via a wireless signal are received by one or more base transceiver stations (BTSs) and sent to a base station controller (BSC) or other device remote from the BTSs. The data are then sent from the remote device to the BTS(s) transmitting data to a second MU. If the two MUs engaged in communication are within the same cell or adjacent cells, and the savings of backhaul resources outweighs the additional wireless resource costs associated with performing the call anchor function at a BTS, then a single BTS is used to communicate with both MUs. This single BTS performs the call anchor function.

  • Patent number: 6970449
Abstract: A communications system includes base transceiver stations providing wireless services for mobile units. The system further includes a packet network coupling the stations to a gateway. To distribute information received for communication to a mobile unit, the gateway may encapsulate the information as a multicast packet addressed to a multicast address. This multicast address corresponds to a multicast group associated with the mobile unit. The packet network distributes copies of the multicast packet to a group of stations that are registered for the multicast group. These stations may then communicate information from the multicast packet to the mobile unit using wireless communications techniques.

  • Patent number: 6961573
Abstract: A method for routing communications at a mobile station includes determining, at a mobile station, one or more routing metrics that are associated with each of a number of communication paths that couple the mobile station and a destination device. At least one of the routing metrics includes the link quality of at least one wireless communication link included in each of the communication paths. The method also includes receiving, at the mobile station, routing information from one or more routers that couple the mobile station and the destination device. The method further includes routing a communication to the destination device based on the determined routing metrics and the received routing information.

  • Patent number: 6957066
Abstract: A communication system includes a radio access network (RAN) and a core packet network that allows registration of mobile devices. A temporary mobile device identifier (TMDI) assigned to the mobile device includes, at least in part, an address of a mobility control function (MCF) currently serving the mobile device. Components in the system use the TMDI to direct messages to the appropriate MCF.

  • Patent number: 6804532
Abstract: A method for re-routing communications based on link quality includes establishing a first wireless communication link with a mobile station. The first wireless communication link is included in a first communication path used for communications between the mobile station and a destination device. The method also includes monitoring, from the mobile station, the link quality of the first wireless link and determining, at the mobile station, that the link quality of the first communication link has decreased below a low link quality threshold. The method further includes routing, using a router at the mobile station, communications between the mobile station and the destination device to a second communication path that includes a second wireless communication link to the mobile station. The second communication path is selected by the router based on one or more metrics.

  • Publication number: 20040179555
Abstract: A method for compressing data is provided that includes accumulating a plurality of bits associated with a communications flow and determining whether one or more of the bits correspond to a silence signal associated with a time division multiplexed (TDM) circuit that facilitates propagation of the flow. A predefined silence pattern may be communicated, in place of one or more of the bits, to a next destination when it is determined that one or more of the bits correspond to the silence signal.

  • Publication number: 20040120319
Abstract: Transmitting packets in a frame includes receiving the packets. Delay constraints are established, where each delay constraint is associated with a packet. Frame departure times of the frames are predicted, where the frames include the packets. A packet departure time is determined for each packet in accordance with the frame departure time of the frame that includes the packet. An order of the packets is determined using the delay constraints and the packet departure times. The packets are placed in the order, and the frames are formed from the ordered packets.

  • Publication number: 20040114623
Abstract: A communication system includes a cell site router that receives a voice traffic stream in a layer two based protocol. The cell site router removes redundant information to generate a compressed stream of payloads from the layer two based protocol voice traffic stream. The cell site router sorts each payload of the compressed stream according to its intended destination and generates a layer two packet for each group of payloads of the compressed stream having a same intended destination. The cell site router prioritizes for transmission each layer two packet with other packets not carrying the voice traffic stream and having the same intended destination The communication system also includes an aggregation node that receives packets from the cell site router. The aggregation node separates layer two packets from the other packets and extracts each payload from each of the layer two packets.
