  • Patent number: 5740739
Abstract: A method and apparatus for washing printing press form cylinders and associated applicator rollers in a manner which reduces the drying of quick-drying media, such as varnish or ink, on the applicator roller and form cylinder. The washing device is disposed in a nip between the form cylinder and applicator roller and has two curved surfaces disposed in closely adjacent relation to respective surfaces of the form cylinder and applicator roller. Each curved surface has a spray device for directing a cleaning fluid onto the adjacent form cylinder and applicator roller and a suction-extraction device for removing sprayed cleaning fluid and removed ink and impurities. The method and apparatus may be selectively operated in a print-on mode in which a cleaning fluid is sprayed onto the rotating form cylinder and is suction-extracted from its outer surface.

  • Patent number: 5588365
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for the metering of liquid media, especially varnish, of differing viscosity in an offset printing machine. Exchangeable metering subassemblies are assigned to a form cylinder. The first metering subassembly provided for processing low-viscosity media consists of a reservoir, a dipping roller, a metering roller and the form cylinder. The second metering subassembly for processing higher-viscosity media consists of a chamber doctor, a screened applicator roller and the form cylinder. In a further version, both metering subassemblies are assigned permanently to the form cylinder. Depending on the media to be processed, the necessary subassemblies are engaged with the form cylinder and the other subassembly is disengaged from the form cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5517917
Abstract: Method and apparatus for metering liquid media of different viscosity and preferably for metering liquid media for application to a printing carrier in varnishing units. In order to assure precise metering, exchangeable metering systems are assigned to a forme cylinder. If processing of low-viscosity media is required, a metering roller and an applicator roller of identical external diameter but different surface hardness are used. For the processing of higher-viscosity media, a chamber-type doctor with a screened applicator roller is used.

  • Patent number: 5476042
Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying a liquid medium to a printing carrier in offset printing machines. It is suitable for processing media of different viscosity, such as low-viscosity dispersion lacquers or higher-viscosity bronze and effect printing inks. In order to guarantee precise metering, two function modules are assigned in an exchangeable manner to a forme cylinder in two bearings. If processing of low-viscosity media is required, the first function module, consisting at least of a metering roller and an applicator roller, is used. For processing higher-viscosity media, the second function module, consisting at least of a screened applicator roller and a chamber-type doctor, is used.

  • Patent number: 5309835
Abstract: A device for drawing and bending the trailing edge of a printing plate onto a plate cylinder of a printing machine such as a sheet-fed rotary printing press, in which a pressure roller with an attached actuatable folding strip draws a printing plate, which has its leading print edge fastened into a tension rail, around the outer circumference of the plate cylinder as the plate cylinder is rotated, to a position where the folding strip is actuated thereby introducing the trailing edge of the printing plate into a second tension rail. The device provides a means for drawing the printing plate onto the printing cylinder with a desirable uniform tension and without requiring auxiliary devices for pre-folding the printing plate in order to secure the trailing printing plate edge into a tension rail.

  • Patent number: 5110159
Abstract: A rotating union for supplying compressed air to the end of a journal of a rotating part of a printing press including a rotor disposed on the rotational axis of the journal and a tubular housing disposed in surrounding relation about the rotor. A plurality of ball bearings each having inner and outer bearing races are disposed between the rotor and tubular housing member for defining a plurality of axially spaced annular air chambers corresponding in number to the air supply lines connected to the tubular housing. Sealing discs are disposed adjacent an axial end of the bearings which in response to communication of pressurized air to the annular air chambers sealingly engage the axial ends of the inner and outer bearing races to effect sealing of the annular air chambers. In pressureless operation, the sealing discs are retained by sealing rings.

  • Patent number: 5076166
Abstract: An arrangement for the accurately positioned quick-action clamping and tensioning of printing plates on a plate cylinder (1). Clamping tools (14) are disposed in frame walls (2) and, after appropriate positioning of the plate cylinder, are engageable in coupling sleeves (12) on camshafts (4.3, 5.3) of front and rear tensioning bars (4, 5) by the application of pressure medium (15, 16, 17, 18). Clamping and unclamping is then effected by turning the clamping tools (14) via levers (20) and compressed air cylinders (23). A compressed air motor (25) is disposed in the cylinder gap (3) for tensioning purposes.

  • Patent number: 5076167
Abstract: In order that the tension, particularly of large printing plates, and their automatic retensioning, may be regulated uniformly over the entire width without having an adverse effect on the final tensioning by means of tensioning screws (11), a tensioning lever (15, 16) is associated with each tensioning screw and is pivotally connected to a divided rear tensioning bar (4). The tensioning levers bear via lugs (17) on a pressure strip (9) movable in the cylinder gap, there being springs (12) acting on the free ends of the levers.

  • Patent number: 4813353
Abstract: A sheet gripper for a rotary press is provided having a hooked gripper finger pivotably connected at its lower end to a clamping element, and a roller disposed upon the gripper finger is biased against the guiding surfaces of a finger support element to ensure smooth changes from open and closed gripper finger positions, substantially without any vibrational motion or displacement resulting in the plane of sheet motion. Preferably, a compression spring is mounted in the clamping element to bias the roller against the gripper support element, the element having a rectilinear guide surface disposed substantially perpendicularly to a retaining surface, and a cam surface which extends upwardly and inclined outwardly from the rectilinear guide surface. Upon oscillation of the gripper shaft, the roller is guided along the rectilinear guide surface and cam surface, thereby defining accurate gripper finger motion.

  • Patent number: 4480548
Abstract: A roller cleaning device for a varnishing system in a printing press has liquid-supplying means pivotally arranged above the rollers conveying varnish. The spatial distribution of the liquid-supplying means differs over the length of the rollers. The liquid-supplying means are closer together in two edge zones than in the central zone; the liquid-supplying means in the central zone have nozzles that are spaced apart from one another at a relatively large interval. The liquid-supplying means come into operation at stopping and at the onset and cessation of printing. The liquid-supplying means in the edge zone operate, in accordance with format width, throughout printing.
