  • Patent number: 8091121
Abstract: Techniques for supporting concurrent data services with different credentials are described. A wireless communication network authenticates a user/device whenever new credentials are used. An access terminal sends first credentials via a Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) link to a Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN) and receives an indication of successful authentication for a first data service based on the first credentials. The access terminal may receive a request for a second data service and second credentials from an internal application or a terminal device coupled to the access terminal. The access terminal then sends the second credentials via the PPP link to the PDSN while the first data service is ongoing. The access terminal receives from the PDSN an indication of successful authentication for the second data service based on the second credentials.

  • Patent number: 8009588
Abstract: A system and method for transparent Mobile IP registration within PPP negotiation uses a mobile telephone to relay messages between terminal equipment and a Foreign Agent (FA). An IPCP configuration request message by the terminal equipment requesting the assignment of an IP address is modified by the mobile telephone to delete the IP address request option. Other configuration options are forwarded unchanged by the mobile telephone to the peer/network. The peer/network responds with an acknowledgement of the requested configuration options and flow control between the terminal and the MT is asserted to permit Mobile IP registration. In the course of Mobile IP registration, and IP address is assigned to the mobile unit by the FA. Upon completion of the Mobile IP registration, flow control between the mobile telephone and the terminal is deasserted and the IP address assigned during Mobile IP registration is provided to the terminal equipment.

  • Publication number: 20100303074
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for communicating IP datagrams efficiently within communication links employing variable frame sizes bundles IP datagrams into data payloads. The number of datagrams that can fit within a current frame size is determined, a bundle header indicating that the bundle header is associated with a bundled IP datagram is generated that includes information for unpacking bundled IP datagrams. The bundle header is joined to one or more IP datagrams to form a data payload that is communicated as a frame payload without indicating in a frame header that the frame includes bundled IP datagrams. Information in the bundle header enables a receiver processor to extract the IP datagrams from the frame payload without requiring modifications to the frame header. A bundle header may precede each IP datagram, or one bundle header may include a map IP datagrams in the frame payload.

  • Publication number: 20100284341
Abstract: The packets generated by each of multiple packet data applications are provided to a single Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) stack and a single High-level Data Link Control (HDLC) framing layer to convert data packets into byte streams suitable for transmission through Radio Link Protocol (RLP) connections. Each of the resultant multiple byte streams is then provided to one of multiple RLP connections having different retransmission and delay properties. The RLP connection selected for sending data from each application is based on the grade of service most appropriate for the application. At the receiver, the data from the multiple RLP connections is provided to a single PPP stack.

  • Patent number: 7826418
Abstract: An ordered list of precedence values includes a number of blocks of precedence values. An operating system receives filters from an application. The operating system assigns a precedence value to each filter from the available block of precedence values that has the highest priority. Precedence values are assigned to maintain a precedence order specified by the application. Filters and their assigned precedence values are communicated to an entity that filters packets by applying the filters in the order of their precedence values. Filters for an application can be added, deleted, or modified without affecting the precedence values of other filters for other applications. If an assignment is to be made when the lowest priority block is not available, then a repacking operation is performed to fill unused blocks in the list. The repacking is performed to reduce signaling associated with communicating reassigned precedences values to the filtering entity.

  • Patent number: 7701958
Abstract: This disclosure is directed to techniques for supporting transition between network communication protocols in a communication network. The techniques may be applicable to different network communication protocols, but are especially useful in the transition from the IPv4 communication protocol to the IPv6 communication protocol in a wireless communication network. In general, to reduce consumption of scarce IPv4 address during the transition period, a network communication device implementing a dual IPv4/IPv6 stack acquires an IPv4 address only when necessary to communicate with IPv4 resources on the network. The network communication device uses an IPv6 address at the start of a communication session, and does not acquire an IPv4 address unless a need arises later in the session for communication with an IPv4 resource. The IPv4 address may be acquired for a limited period of time, such as fixed period of time or a period of actual usage, to further promote availability of IPv4 addresses.

  • Patent number: 7668545
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are presented for enabling data connectivity when a handoff occurs between one communication network and another communication network, wherein the communication networks belong to different air interface standards. The mobile station triggers a Compression Control Protocol (CCP) request message to a tethered device if the mobile station determines that a new PDSN is not enabled to perform the CCP protocol. The tethered device then responds with a CCP request message with or without new negotiation parameters. The mobile station forwards the CCP request message to the new PDSN. Since the new PDSN is not enabled with CCP, the new PDSN responds with a CCP rejection message. The rejection message is passed from the mobile station back to the tethered device. The tethered device then sends uncompressed data packets to the PDSN.

  • Patent number: 7590408
Abstract: In a wireless communication system, a method for early determination of network support for Mobile IP is disclosed. A mobile node is in communication with a wireless network. Then a test is performed for a disconnect condition wherein the disconnect condition is an early indication of network non-support for Mobile IP as identified by at least a requirement for authentication. Early indication relates to identification of the non-support for Mobile IP prior to or during network packet connection. If the disconnect condition is found, the mobile node disconnects from the wireless network. If the disconnect condition is not found, the mobile node stays connected to the wireless network.

  • Patent number: 7542458
Abstract: Techniques for minimizing dormant reactivations to receive IPv6 Router Advertisements are described. In a first scheme, a timer is used to trigger a wireless terminal to solicit a Router Advertisement. The timer is set to a threshold time period computed based on the current prefix lifetime. When the timer expires, a Router Solicitation is sent. In a second scheme, after the timer expires, a Router Solicitation is sent whenever the terminal is active. In a third scheme, a Router Solicitation is sent when the timer expires if solicitation is triggered and at any time thereafter whenever the terminal is active. In a fourth scheme, two timers are set to two threshold time periods. After the first timer expires, a Router Solicitation is sent whenever the terminal is active. When the second timer expires, a Router Solicitation is sent if solicitation is triggered by a predefined event or condition regardless of the terminals state.
