  • Publication number: 20030153324
Abstract: A method and apparatus for conserving home agent resources in mobile Internet Protocol (IP) deployment is disclosed. In a wireless communication system supporting mobile IP, a registration request message is sent by a mobile node to a home agent. The registration request includes a care-of address. A home address is provided for the mobile node and is associated with the care-of address. The home agent provides an inactivity timer for the mobile node to monitor the communication activity of the mobile node. In addition, the home agent monitors a condition of a resource. When the condition satisfies an overload condition, the home agent starts a reclaiming resources process that utilizes the inactivity timer for the mobile node.

  • Publication number: 20030099219
Abstract: Techniques for maintaining packet data connectivity in a wireless communications network are presented. A mobile station detects a change from a first packet control function (PCF) to a second PCF. The first PCF is connected to a first packet data service node (PDSN). The second PCF is connected to a second PDSN. The mobile station consults a database configured to map at least one previously visited PCF to a servicing PDSN. Based at least in part on the consulting, the mobile station observes one from among a plurality of predetermined origination patterns, wherein an origination pattern defines origination functions to be performed by the mobile station. As such, zombie PPP and mobile IP instances may be detected and handled.

  • Publication number: 20030093540
Abstract: A method and system for supporting a network layer protocol in a wireless communication network are presented. A network element, such as a packet data serving node (PDSN), receives, from a mobile device, a first packet of a receive packet stream. If the first packet conforms to a first predetermined protocol, then at least a portion of the first packet is forwarded to a router that supports the first predetermined protocol. The network element receives a second packet forwarded by the router. If the second packet conforms to the first predetermined network layer protocol, then at least a portion of the second packet is transmitted in a transmit packet stream. As such, the network element need not natively support the first predetermined protocol.

  • Publication number: 20020154627
Abstract: Techniques to maintain an IP session established via a first (e.g., HDR) radio network while being tuned to a second (e.g., cdma2000) radio network. During registration, configuration, and session establishment with the first and second radio networks, an access terminal may be respectively assigned first and second IP addresses for use during these sessions. If the access terminal leaves the first radio network, it can request that the IP session be maintained and provides a forwarding address. Thereafter, if the first radio network has data for the access terminal, it sends a “spoof” packet to the access terminal using the forwarding address. The spoof packet can indicate that there is data available for the access terminal. Upon receiving a communication (e.g., a page) from the second radio network in response to the spoof packet, the access terminal establishes a connection with the first radio network and receives the data.

  • Publication number: 20020114343
Abstract: A method for selectively maintaining compression state and applying a compression technique after a PPP renegotiation on a Um interface of a wireless communication network. A communication device receives packetized data transmitted from a terminal device, which is coupled to the communication device via an Rm interface. The communication device determines whether the received packetized data comprises compressed or uncompressed data. Upon determining that the received packetized data comprises compressed data, the communication device determines whether connection information identifying a compression slot is included in the compressed data. The communication device further determines whether the connection information exceeds a highest-numbered decompression slot from a plurality of decompression slots on said Um interface.

  • Patent number: 6377556
Abstract: A method, within a wireless communication system, and a wireless MT2 device which provide for the resynchronization of a PPP link on each one of a Um and Rm interface without affecting the other of the Um and Rm interface. When a handoff is performed, such that the communications of the mobile MT2 device is handed off to a new BS/MSC, the Um interface will undergo PPP configuration renegotiation without causing the Rm interface also to undergo PPP configuration renegotiation. Similarly, when the Rm interface undergoes PPP configuration renegotiation, the Um interface will not undergo PPP configuration renegotiation.

  • Patent number: 6370118
Abstract: A method and a wireless communication device (MT2) for simultaneously negotiating LCP or IPCP configuration options over both the Rm and the Um interfaces. When the MT2 device receives either an LCP or an IPCP Configure-Request packet over one of the Rm or the Um interfaces, the MT2 device parses the requested configuration options and determines whether the requested options are supported by the MT2 device. If the requested options are supported, the MT2 device saves a Configure-Request ID, included in the Configure-Request packet, and frames the Configure-Request packet in a PPP frame for transmission on the other of the Rm or the Um interfaces. If any of the requested configuration options are not supported by the MT2 device, the MT2 device creates a Configure-Reject packet, including the unsupported options, and frames the Configure-Reject packet in a PPP frame for transmission over the interface through which it received the Configure-Request packet.

  • Patent number: 6230012
Abstract: A system and method for performing mobile node registration. The system comprises a terminal device for transmitting packetized data, and a wireless communication device coupled to said terminal device for monitoring said packetized data for an Internet Protocol (IP) address contained in an IP address request. The wireless communication device initiates mobile node registration using said IP address if said IP address request is for a static IP address. The wireless communication device prevents the terminal device from sending or receiving packetized data when initiating mobile node registration, and allows said terminal device to send and received packetized data upon completion of mobile node registration. As a result, the mobile node registration occurs transparently to the terminal device, obviating the need for the terminal device to have its own Mobile IP support.
