Abstract: Processes and compositions are described for the use in foodstuff flavor and aroma and perfume and perfumed article aroma augmenting, modifying, altering, and enhancing compositions and as foodstuff, chewing gum, toothpaste, medicinal product, perfume and perfumed article aroma imparting materials of indane alkanols and tricyclic isochromans defined according to the generic structure: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen or methyl; R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 represent hydrogen, methyl or isopropyl; the dashed line represents a carbon-carbon single bond or no bond; X represents --CH.sub.2 --, CH.sub.3 or hydrogen; with the proviso (i) that R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 represent methyl when R.sub.4 is hydrogen and R.sub.5 is isopropyl and R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 represent methyl when R.sub.2 is hydrogen and R.sub.3 is isopropyl; and the dashed line represents a carbon-carbon single bond when X is --CH.sub.2 -- and the dashed line represents no bond when X is hydrogen or CH.sub.3.

Abstract: A process is described for the preparation of substituted oxyacetaldehydes and cyclic acetals thereof according to the reaction sequence: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2, taken together form a lower alkylene group; wherein R.sub.3 is alkyl, alkenyl or alkadienyl and X is halogen selected from the group consisting of chlorine and bromine, the reaction (i) being carried out (1) using a "phase transfer agent" and (2) in a two phase system.

Abstract: Described are derivatives of 2-oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octanes and precursors therefor, cyclohexenemethanols as well as lower alkyl esters of said cyclohexenemethanols. The oxabicyclooctanes are useful in perfumery and foodstuff, medicinal product and tobacco flavors. The cyclohexenemethanols are useful as precursors for the oxabicyclooctanes and are, themselves, useful for their organoleptic properties in perfumery and flavors as are the esters of said cyclohexenemethanols.

Abstract: Described is the compound 6-hydroxy-2,6-dimethylheptanal useful in augmenting or enhancing the aroma or taste of foodstuffs, flavoring compositions for foodstuffs, tobacco compositions, flavoring compositions for tobacco, perfume compositions, ingredients for perfume compositions, perfumed articles and ingredients for perfumed articles as well as a process for preparing 6-hydroxy-2,6-dimethylheptanal comprising the steps of:(i) forming a sulfite addition salt of 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptenal by mixing an alkali metal sulfite in boric acid with 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptenal and(ii) hydrating the thus formed 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptenal sulfite addition salt with a hydrating reagentas well as the intermediate which is the sulfite addition salt of 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptenal.

Abstract: Described are the bicyclic compounds having the generic structure: ##STR1## (Z is benzo or cyclohexano) and compositions containing same for use in augmenting or enhancing the aroma and/or taste of foodstuffs, chewing gums, toothpastes and medicinal products. These compounds produce in foodstuffs, chewing gums, toothpastes and medicinal products having a sweet, green, fruity, coumarinic, marzipan-like aroma and taste.

Abstract: Described is a process for augmenting or enhancing the taste of a chewing gum comprising the step of adding to a chewing gum blend at least one 2-oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octane selected from the group consisting of 3-isopropyl-1,5,8-trimethyl-2-oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octane and 3-ethyl-1,5,8-trimethyl-2-oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octane.

Addition of the said oxyhydrocarbylnorbornanes to consumable materials is indicated to produce in perfumes, colognes and perfumed articles, natural, sweet pine, incense, camphene-like, sweet, green, floral, fruity, dried fruity, ionone-like, orris-like and nasturtium-like aromas with dried, woody, piney, sweaty, geranic acid-like nuances.
