Patent number: 6361432Abstract: A diffuser adapted to regulate air flow from an underfloor air distribution system. A grille sits on a dust receptacle or basket-shaped housing that is supported by a mounting assembly in the floor. A flow regulator or damper nests inside the housing. Both the housing and the flow regulator have air slots extending through their side walls. Air from the underfloor air plenum passes through these slots into the diffuser and is forced through helical slots in the grille into the room above the diffuser. The air flow rate can be adjusted by rotating the flow regulator within the housing so that the slots in the flow regulator are either in or out of registry with the slots in the housing. The flow regulator can be rotated by turning the grille. The grille and mounting assembly have indicators that give a visual indication of the position of the flow regulator with respect to the housing, the opening of the slots, and the flow rate through the diffuser.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 1999Date of Patent: March 26, 2002Assignee: Tomkins Industries, Inc.Inventor: Mark A. Patent number: 6222881Abstract: A transform is applied to a region of a current video frame to generate transform signals corresponding to the region. An activity measure is generated using the transform signals. The activity measure is then used to determine whether to encode the region as a skipped region. The region is encoded in accordance with that determination to generate an encoded bit stream for the region. In a preferred embodiment, the transform signals are DCT coefficients and the activity measure is a weighted sum of the DCT coefficients, where the weighting of the low-frequency DCT coefficients is greater than the weighting of the high-frequency DCT coefficients. The region is encoded as a skipped region if the activity measure is less than a threshold value; otherwise, the region is encoded as either an inter encoded region or an intra encoded region.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1994Date of Patent: April 24, 2001Assignee: Intel CorporationInventor: Mark Walker

Patent number: 5920808Abstract: A biasing circuit for a power amplifier, for use in a transmitter, that substantially reduces distortion during key-up and thereby reduces key-up time. The power amplifier includes an output transistor and a bias circuit. The bias circuit is applied to all the class AB stages of the power amplifier. The bias circuit provides to the output transistor a first bias level during the preheat period and a second bias level during the transmit period. This first bias level is predetermined to cause the output transistor to reach the steady-state junction temperature achieved by the output transistor during the transmit period (i.e., when transmitting output signals biased with the second bias level). The preheat period ends when this steady-state temperature is reached. Thus, the power amplifier can then transition to a transmit period having already reached the steady-state junction temperature. Because the output transistor is already heated to the steady-state junction temperature, "thermal" distortion (i.e.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 1996Date of Patent: July 6, 1999Assignee: Glenayre Electronics, Inc.Inventors: David E. Patent number: 5732333Abstract: A linear transmitter (101) using predistortion includes a modulator (103), a predistorter (107), a digital quadrature modulator (111), an upconverter (113), a power amplifier (115), and an antenna (117). In addition, the transmitter (101) has a feedback loop including a coupler (119), a downconverter (123), a digital quadrature demodulator (125), and a trainer (131). The digital data to be transmitted is provided into the modulator (103), which converts the digital data into in-phase and quadrature component signals. The in-phase and quadrature component signals are then provided to the predistorter (107), which "predistorts" the component signals prior to amplification. The digital quadrature modulator (111) converts the component signals into a single analog signal. The upconverter (113) upconverts this signal from the predistorter (107) into the desired frequency of transmission, which is provided to the power amplifier (115) and the antenna (117) for amplification and broadcast.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1996Date of Patent: March 24, 1998Assignee: Glenayre Electronics, Inc.Inventors: Charles Brian Cox, David Kent Bonds, Jay Jui-Chieh Chen, Flaviu C. Patent number: 5729484Abstract: A signal is encoding, in part, by generating the transform of the signal in a transform domain. The coefficients of the transformed signal are then ordered according to a statistical model of the transform. Decoding of the encoded signal generates progressively accurate approximations of the fully reconstructed signal. If, for some reason, decoding is truncated, a useable partial result will nevertheless be available. In a preferred embodiment, natural image signals are encoded by ordering the coefficients of the transformed signal generated by applying a discrete cosine transform. Decoding of the encoded signals generates progressively accurate approximations of the fully reconstructed image. The invention has particular application to systems with limited and/or variable transmission, storage, and/or decode processing bandwidth.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 1995Date of Patent: March 17, 1998Assignee: Intel CorporationInventors: Walter Mack, J.
