    Abstract: A faulty tracking condition affecting a first head driven by a first actuator of a hard disk drive is determined. The faulty tracking condition is caused by a second actuator of the hard disk drive that is moving while the first actuator is performing a tracking operation. Responsive to the determination of the faulty tracking condition, seek forces of the second actuator that cause the faulty tracking condition affecting the first head are reduced. A controller verifies that similar faulty tracking conditions are reduced with the first head in response to the reduction in seek forces.

    Abstract: An apparatus comprises a layer of channel material, source and drain electrodes configured to enable a flow of electrical current through the channel material, and a layer of quantum dot material configured to generate electron-hole pairs on exposure to electromagnetic radiation to produce a detectable change in the electrical current indicative of one or more of the presence and magnitude of the electromagnetic radiation. The layer of quantum dot material is positioned between the channel material and a layer of conductive material. The layers of channel and conductive material have work functions such that respective built-in electric fields are created at the interfaces between the layer of quantum dot material and the channel and conductive material. The electric field at each interface acts in the same direction to promote separation of the electrons and holes of the electron-hole pairs to facilitate production of the detectable change in electrical current.

The present invention enables the incident electromagnetic radiation (31) to be focussed onto the at least one sensor (5) without the use of additional optical components like lenses or microlenses. This may enable focussed images to be obtained by the apparatus.

    Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed where an FPGA offloads a plurality of processing tasks from a processor. The FPGA can process streaming data received via a network interface, and the FPGA can be controllable in response to control instructions received from the processor. The FPGA comprises resident hardware logic for a plurality of data processing engines that are combinable as a processing pipeline within the FPGA. In response to the control instructions, the FPGA can control which of the data processing engines are activated and which of the data processing engines are deactivated to selectively tap into the streaming data to perform pipelined processing operations on the streaming data via the activated data processing engines. The deactivated data processing engines remain on the FPGA and provide a pass through path for the streaming data whereby the deactivated data processing engines do not perform processing operations on streaming data received thereby.

    Abstract: Methods for calculating nutrient content information. In one embodiment, the methods comprise: receiving a recipe having a list of ingredients and quantities, for each of the ingredients a corresponding record is found within a database of known records, the records are associated to quantities and nutritional values. The units of measurement of the recipe ingredients and the identified record are compared. When the units are the same, no conversion is performed. When the units are different, the units of the known record are converted using a conversion factor derived from a relationship between the differing units of measurement. In one variant, the conversion factor may be identified from a table of conversion factors relating various units of measurement to one another. Finally, the converted or the known nutritional values are multiplied by a ratio of the quantity of the ingredient in the recipe to the quantity of the known record.
