Patent number: 6403835Abstract: The invention relates to the shape selective acylation of an organic compound. In particular, the invention describes a process for such acylation wherein the process comprises reducing the number of surface acid sites without dealuminations on at least a portion of the surface of a zeolite and acylating the organic compound in the presence of the zeolite. The organic compounds used in the invention include, for example, olefins, aromatic hydrocarbons, aromatic heterocyclic compounds, and phenolic compounds wherein the organic group may be substituted or unsubstituted. The zeolite may be any natural or synthetic zeolite with a unidimensional or multidimensional network, for example a two-dimensional, or three-dimensional network, or any molecular sieve with structural features similar to these.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 2000Date of Patent: June 11, 2002Assignee: California Institute of TechnologyInventors: Mark E. Patent number: 6383290Abstract: The oil application mechanism of a lane conditioning machine has a moving dispensing head that deposits intermittent streams of oil onto the rotating surface of a transfer roller under the control of a programmed control system as the machine moves down the lane. The transfer roller, in turn, transfers the oil to a rotating bristle-type applicator roller that engages the lane and lays down an oil film having a cross-sectional configuration that corresponds to a preselected pattern established by the control system. A smoothing assembly engages the oil immediately after it is deposited on the transfer roller and before it reaches the applicator roller so as to extend the deposit of oil completely around the circumference of the transfer roller in an even layer. The smoothing assembly includes a series of independent, spring-loaded pad units along the length of the transfer roller, each of which includes a section of fabric with a raised nab engaging the surface of the transfer roller.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 2000Date of Patent: May 7, 2002Assignee: The Kegel Company, Inc.Inventors: Mark E. Patent number: 6380266Abstract: The present invention relates to amorphous inorganic materials having pores of controlled size and shape with one or more spatially organized functional groups formed therein. Much like the active site residues in an enzyme, these functional groups can be positioned in a defined three dimensional relationship within the voids and with respect to each other. By varying both the positions and identities of these functional groups, diverse sets of substrate specific adsorbents and non-biologically-based catalysts can be made.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1998Date of Patent: April 30, 2002Assignee: California Institute of TechnologyInventors: Alexander Katz, Mark E. Patent number: 6331500Abstract: The present invention relates to functionalized molecular sieves that are useful as shape-selective adsorbents and catalysts. The inventive molecular sieves have a crystalline framework and include micropores of substantially uniform size and shape formed therein. These micropores contain one or more accessible organic moieties that are linked to the crystalline framework by a carbon-silicon ond. Shape selectivity of the inventive molecular sieves may be modulated by varying the size and shape of the micropores (which is a function of the particular molecular sieve being synthesized) and the organic moiety incoporated therein.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 1998Date of Patent: December 18, 2001Assignee: California Institute of TechnologyInventors: Katsuyuki Tsuji, Christopher W. Patent number: 6184413Abstract: Supported phase catalysts in which the support phase is highly polar, most preferably ethylene glycol or glycerol, are disclosed. An organometallic compound, preferably a metal complex of chiral sulfonated 2,2′-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1′-binaphthyl is dissolved in the support phase. Such supported phase catalysts are useful for asymmetric synthesis of optically active compounds, including the asymmetric hydrogenation of prochiral unsaturated carbon-hetero atom bonds, such as ketones, imines and beta-keto esters.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 1999Date of Patent: February 6, 2001Assignee: California Institute of TechnologyInventors: Mark E. Patent number: 6117027Abstract: A sports assembly such as a basketball goal assembly with a removable ballast wherein the basketball goal comprises a base and a ballast component, which is separate from the base. In the assembled configuration, the ballast member preferably extends beyond the rear of the base to increase the pullover force required to topple the unit and provide more stability. A support pole preferably is mounted at the rear of the base. Thus, by extending the ballast member beyond the rear of the base, the advantage of rearwardly disposed ballast may be achieved. In order to be easily transported, the ballast component may comprise one large tank with wheels or the like, or multiple attachable tanks. In another embodiment of the invention, there is a sports apparatus ballast having two removable members which engage a structural member of the particular sports apparatus such as the pole of a basketball goal assembly.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1999Date of Patent: September 12, 2000Assignee: Huffy CorporationInventors: Mark E. Patent number: 6004231Abstract: A molded frame backboard assembly for supporting a rebound member between separately formed front and rear frames such that the peripheral edge of the rebound member is encapsulated within the frame. The rear frame preferably is formed as one piece of plastic material having sufficient strength and rigidity to support the rebound member and may include an internal reinforcing structure integrally molded therewith. The front frame preferably is molded from plastic and has a large central opening providing substantially unobstructed access to the rebound surface of the rebound member. The rear frame includes a recess that locates the rebound member in a predetermined position within the rear frame. The front and rear frame members include cooperating alignment structures that enable the front frame to be easily located on and attached to the rear frame after the rebound member has been positioned within the rear frame.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1996Date of Patent: December 21, 1999Assignee: Huffy CorporationInventors: Randy R. Patent number: 6001034Abstract: A portable basketball goal support system having a base, a ballast tank, and an arm for supporting a basketball goal support pole can be assembled in a compact configuration for shipping or storage and an expanded configuration for use. The support pole is mounted at a rear portion of the base and angled forward in the expanded configuration. In the expanded configuration, the ballast tank extends at least partially behind the support pole, while in the compact configuration, the ballast tank may be nested within portion of the base, thereby occupying less space. The support pole may be formed with a generally "pear"-shaped cross section defined by large and small curved portions connected by relatively straight sections, such that the large curved portion readily adapts to existing mounting hardware. One or more of the base, ballast tank, and support arm may be formed from plastic with a printed graphics sheet integrally molded therewith.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 1997Date of Patent: December 14, 1999Assignee: Huffy CorporationInventors: Randy R. Schickert, Ronald A. White, Mark E. Davis
