Patent number: 6426871Abstract: A portable notebook computer having a thickness of only one inch is obtained by provision of a computer housing containing a keyboard assembly and a motherboard positioned directly below the keyboard assembly, the keyboard assembly and the motherboard thereby defining a region in the enclosure. The other components comprising the computer; i.e. a hard disk drive, a PCMCIA option slot, a trackball assembly, and a DC to DC convertor, are positioned in an adjacent and generally co-planar relationship with this region. A battery housing is mounted externally on the computer housing for supplying electrical power to the computer.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 2001Date of Patent: July 30, 2002Assignee: Compaq Information Technologies Group, L.P.Inventors: Mark J. Patent number: 6378068Abstract: A laptop computer system includes a protected mode microprocessor capable of operating in restricted and unrestricted modes, and an arrangement which in response to a predetermined condition saves information from the processor and then forcibly switches the processor to its unrestricted mode of operation. When running a multi-tasking operating system where an application program is being executed in a restricted mode, a suspend/resume operation can be carried out in which the system is substantially powered down and then powered back up, and will resume the interrupted application with the restricted mode back in effect. Further, set-up changes such as adjustment of the processor speed can be made without exiting the application program running in the restricted mode.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1995Date of Patent: April 23, 2002Assignee: NEC CorporationInventors: Mark J. Publication number: 20020040425Abstract: The presently preferred embodiment of the invention provides a system in which a plurality of integrated circuits are connected in a multi-dimensional network configuration without requiring an LDT switch. In this configuration, each integrated circuit has more than two LDT Interfaces. For example, integrated circuits with four LDT interfaces are assembled into a two-dimensional mesh. Integrated circuits with four LDT interfaces can also be linked into a PLEX topology.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 19, 2001Publication date: April 4, 2002Inventors: David Chaiken, Mark J. Foster

Publication number: 20020040391Abstract: A network architecture is provided in which a server farm is assembled with systems-on-a-chip, each of which implements one or more integrated standard or other network interfaces. The standard network interface of a system-on-a-chip is connected point-to-point to the standard network interface on another system-on-a-chip. The configuration disclosed herein eliminates the need for standard network opponents when assembling the server farm, resulting in significant savings both in terms of cost and space.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 19, 2001Publication date: April 4, 2002Inventors: David Chaiken, Mark J. Patent number: 5974261Abstract: A computer system has a processing unit with suspend/resume capability, a memory, and a hard disk drive. In response to a first command from the processor, the hard disk drive sends its status to the processor and the processor stores it in the memory. In response to a second command from the processor, the hard disk accepts from the processor the status retrieved by the processor from the memory, and restores itself to this status. In an alternative embodiment, the hard disk drive response to the first command by storing its status on its own hard disk, and responds to the second command by restoring this status from the hard disk. In each case, an output line from the hard disk used to control a light emitting diode is also selectively used to create an interrupt to the processor which facilitates the systems entry into the suspend mode.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 1995Date of Patent: October 26, 1999Assignee: Vantus TechnologyInventors: Saifuddin T. Patent number: 5638532Abstract: Computer systems using a processor that is capable of operating in a system management mode (SMM) employ a dedicated system management RAM (SMRAM). The processor uses the SMRAM when the processor is performing a task associated with the SMM. The processor is capable of generating a range of system addresses. The range includes a particular subrange of system addresses that are used for accessing the SMRAM. A memory controller decodes the system addresses generated by the processor and enables access to the SMRAM, regardless of whether the processor is operating in the SMM, when the controller decodes a system address of the particular subrange. The range of system addresses also includes a second subrange. The memory controller also enables access to the SMRAM when the processor is operating in the SMM and the controller decodes a system address of the second subrange. The memory controller indicates to the processor whether data associated with the enabled SMRAM can be stored in a cache memory.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1994Date of Patent: June 10, 1997Assignee: Digital Equipment CorporationInventors: Robert C. Patent number: 5557500Abstract: A heat dissipating arrangement in a portable computer uses a copper slug disposed between a heat-generating central processing unit (CPU) chip and the underside of a metallic keyboard baseplate. The slug also extends through a copper-plated hole in a printed circuit (PC) board, and is either soldered to the copper plating or press-fit into the hole to enhance heat transfer between the slug and the PC board. Small through-holes extend through the PC board and the copper plating next to the opening. These through-holes connect the copper plating to several layers of etch within the PC board, so that these layers act like fins on a heat sink to increase heat transfer away from the CPU.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1994Date of Patent: September 17, 1996Assignee: Digital Equipment CorporationInventors: Allan S. Patent number: 5551033Abstract: A laptop computer system includes a protected mode microprocessor capable of operating in restricted and unrestricted modes, and an arrangement which in response to a predetermined condition saves information from the processor and then forcibly switches the processor to its unrestricted mode of operation. The system includes a first interrupt mask register having a bit for indicating whether an interrupt is to be recognized by the processor, a second interrupt mask register having a bit for indicating whether the interrupt is to be recognized by a further circuit, and an arrangement responsive to a load of the first mask register for conforming the bit of the second mask register to the bit of the first mask register in a manner invisible to an application program being executed by the processor.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1992Date of Patent: August 27, 1996Assignee: Zenith Data Systems CorporationInventors: Mark J.
