  • Patent number: 7039708
Abstract: Provided are apparatus and a method for establishing communications between a Web client computer in a vehicle and a Web server computer connected to the Internet or an intranet, initiated from a remote Web Browser. The Web Browser sends a request to the server, which invokes a process at the server causing a SMS message to be sent to a telephone connected to the client computer. This SMS message includes an identification of the server process (such as a URL) and causes the client computer to establish communications with the server. This allows the Browser to interact with the client computer via a standard Browser request without the overheads of security exposure of requiring the client to be a Web server. The invention is useful for allowing a remote Browser to interact with a computer controlling a vehicle's electronic control systems.

  • Publication number: 20040246108
Abstract: This invention relates to a power line communication (PLC) system wherein the power supply line supplies power and also acts as a communications supply line. A receiver is able to detect small changes in the modulated transmitted information and thereby shut down the circuit. The invention is particularly suitable for use where the IEL is remote from the power supply such as, for example, in down hole oil production situations where very long power cables are used.

  • Publication number: 20040231272
Abstract: A profiled metal sheet for use in the construction of composite slabs is disclosed. The sheet includes a plurality of parallel longitudinal ribs separated by pans and male and female members at opposite sides of the sheet that enable adjacent sheets to be connected together in overlapping relationship. At least one of the ribs, male members and female members has a side that extends from the pan that is adjacent the rib or the member. The side includes a re-entrant section and a corner section that connects the side and the adjacent pan. The corner section includes a plurality of regions at spaced intervals along the length of the corner section that extend outwardly compared with adjacent regions of the corner section. The spaced regions are provided to improve longitudinal slip resistance of composite slabs formed from the sheet.

  • Publication number: 20040220988
Abstract: An interleaver parameter generator circuit used to calculate and generate on an as needed basis interleaver parameters for interleaving blocks of information of varying lengths in accordance with a pseudorandom pattern defined by the 3GPP standard. The interleaver parameter generator circuit calculates and generates the defined interleaver parameters based on an input parameter that represents the length of the block of information to be interleaved. At least one of the defined parameters is calculated and generated using a decomposed form of its definition. The interleaver parameter generator circuit uses well known circuit blocks such as multipliers, subtractors, Compare-and-Select circuits and other circuits to calculate and generate the defined parameters.

  • Publication number: 20040201493
Abstract: A power line communications technique (PLC) is disclosed which allows communications across any three phase electric system by modulating the impedance through earth between any two points of differing voltage on the electrical system in order to use the power supply as the communications power source thereby using the power supply current as the communications carrier. No additional coupled communications source is required and modulation of an earth link current at the power frequency is especially suitable for remote electrical loads, such as an oil well electric submersible pump, where it is most cost effective to only have the three power conductors and no neutral nor signal wires in the power cable. Embodiments of the invention are described.

  • Publication number: 20040125152
Abstract: A method and apparatus (100) for entry of variant characters provide a user interface (102) to allow a user to select a variant character list (302) for a specific language and optionally customize the list to the user's preferences. Processing circuitry (104) allows the user to add and delete variants from a previously stored default table and/or change the order in which the variants are displayed for each character. The user enters a variant character entry mode by depressing a character key for a predetermined period of time, followed by repeatedly depressing the same key to scroll through possible variants. Variants for the selected key are then displayed at a highlighted cursor position on a display (106). The user selects the desired variant by pressing a key while the desired variant is being highlighted.

  • Publication number: 20040006541
Abstract: A system and method of making broadcast content selectively available to users in different forms, including a system for charging and collecting compensation for at least one form. Broadcast content such as digital music or other information or entertainment is sent out in a protected form and receiving devices may be provided with different keys to unlock the content for long-term storage. The receiver also includes a system for requesting additional rights (such as permanent storage and playing of the content) and for compensating for that additional set of rights. When the user's request is received with the necessary compensation, the user is provided a permission for the greater rights and a method of accessing those rights; otherwise, the content is provided in an ephemeral form and ceases to exist on the users machine.

  • Patent number: 6598801
Abstract: A nozzle for a gas turbine engine that includes an air circuit, a water circuit, and a swirler that facilitate reducing erosion within the nozzle is described. The air circuit is formed by a first conduit that extends along the nozzle. The water circuit is formed by a second conduit that also extends along the nozzle and is radially inward from the first conduit. Each circuit is in flow communication with a discharge opening. An air swirler adjacent the discharge opening discharges air into water spray exiting the water circuit to facilitate evaporating the water to lower engine operating temperatures.

  • Publication number: 20030050809
Abstract: A system, method and computer program product are disclosed for providing feedback on forecasting relating to the sale of goods in a store utilizing a network-based supply chain management framework. Forecasting of at least one aspect of a supply chain is performed based on a first set of data collected from a plurality of stores of the supply chain utilizing a network. The first set of data relates to an amount of goods sold by the stores. A second set of real-time data is collected from the stores utilizing the network. The second set of real-time data relates to the amount of goods sold by the stores. The second set of real-time data is compared against the forecasting and the results of the comparison are fed back for facilitating supply chain management.
