  • Publication number: 20110139689
Abstract: In an axial-flow cylindrical preparative chromatography column that utilizes a piston to close off the top of the resin space inside the column and thereby eliminate void spaces at the top of the resin, a sight glass is incorporated in the column wall to allow monitoring of the packing height and density as the packing material is being placed inside the column, as well as the position of the piston head relative to the packing while the piston is being lowered to consolidated and/or compress the packing. By observing the column interior through the sight glass, the operator can assure that the column receives a more uniform packing density and can minimize the risk of damage to the packing material by excessive force from the piston head.

  • Publication number: 20100305777
Abstract: In an axial-flow cylindrical preparative chromatography column that utilizes a piston to close off the top of the resin space inside the column and thereby eliminate void spaces at the top of the resin, one or more proximity detectors are incorporated in the piston head to either generate a signal indicating the proximity of the piston had to the resin, or to collect a signal, such as a optical signal, emitted from the resin. The value of the signal or any change in the signal is compared to a threshold value to ascertain when the piston head is in proximity to the resin so that the motion of the piston toward the resin can be halted before contact pressure from the piston head damages the resin.

  • Publication number: 20100305310
Abstract: In an affinity-type purification, ligands dissociated from a packed bed that would otherwise leach into the solution containing the species being purified are captured by a second ligand that resides in a porous barrier downstream from the packed bed, the second ligand exhibiting an affinity-type interaction with the dissociated first ligand with sufficient specificity to avoid the undesired retention by the second ligand of species from the liquid sample or source liquid other than the species sought to be purified in the affinity column.

  • Publication number: 20100168971
Abstract: Apparatus and method for efficiently controlling an automatic transmission in an electric vehicle. The method may be implemented by selection of one of at least two belt clutches having different ratios. The timing for disengagement and engagement of each clutch and the proper sequencing of the disengagement and engagement of the clutches is determined to optimize the efficiency of the transmission. A direct drive motor is directly coupled to the transmission's output shaft to provide momentary power to maintain a nearly constant rate of acceleration during shifting. The method may further be applied for shifting an electric vehicle with a first motor coupled to an output shaft through a single belt clutch and a direct drive motor.

  • Publication number: 20100168946
Abstract: A method for controlling an electric vehicle includes computing an electric motor RPM based on a computed Back Electromotive Force (BEMF). Modern electric vehicle designs include intelligent control of the electric motors and transmissions to respond to operator controls and provide efficient operation to extend battery life. An accurate measure of motor RPM is required for such control. Various methods are available for obtaining motor RPM, but most require external sensors susceptible to damage from road debris and the like. The BEMF is proportional to motor speed and independent of motor load. The BEMF may further be computed from the difference between IR loss and motor voltage. The motor RPM is them computed from BEMF using data recorded for the individual motor.

  • Publication number: 20100067253
Abstract: An outside mirror lighting assembly (100) and method inlcludes a housing (108) and a first glass panel (101) where one or more light emitting devices (107) are positioned at an edge of the first glass panel (101). Light rays from the at least one light emitting device (107) propagate within the glass panel for illumining its outer periphery. Words, logos, or other indicia (125) may be also be illuminated by direct or indirect light emitted into an etched area of the glass. The mirror assembly supplies a soft illuminated glow around the outer periphery and/or the indicia for proving a unique and pleasing appearance to the user.
