  • Patent number: 9103975
Abstract: The invention relates to methods, devices, systems and uses of such systems for the generation and detection of electromagnetic fields carrying orbital angular momentum. An electromagnetic wave placed in a resonator having a closed-loop waveguide supporting a guided wave propagating at resonance with angular order, p, and with an angular grating patterned in the closed-loop waveguide, the angular grating having a integer number, q, of grating elements. The angular grating selectively couples the guided wave mode to a free space radiation mode having an OAM quantity, l, and out-of-plane wave vector component, krad,z, and wherein significant coupling to the grating occurs only when the following wave matching condition is satisfied: l=p?mq where: m is the diffraction order of the angular grating, m=1, 2, 3, . . . ,.

  • Publication number: 20150206516
Abstract: A pick for use with stringed musical instruments is disclosed. In some embodiments the pick is characterized by a roughened texture on the front and back substantially planar surfaces of the narrowed bottom portion of a substantially teardrop shaped body for the purpose of altering the tonal properties produced as it moves against strings that are strummed or picked. In further embodiments the roughened textured picking portion is combined with a separate second picking portion that is substantially smooth and useable to produce a conventional sound.

  • Patent number: 9085753
Abstract: The present invention provides novel serum-free cell culture medium and methods for cultivating MDCK cells. In particular, non-tumorigenic MDCK cells. The present invention also provides methods for producing influenza viruses (e.g., particularly cold-adapted, and/or temperature sensitive, and/or attenuated influenza viruses) that eliminate the need for a cell culture medium exchange step. The novel medium and methods are useful to grow influenza viruses, in cell culture to high titer. The present invention further provides purification methods for purifying influenza viruses with high overall recovery of live virus and result in levels of host cell DNA (HCD), host cell protein (HCP) and non-specific endonuclease (e.g., Benzonase), which are below the specifications required by regulatory agencies. The immunogenic compositions can be used to actively immunize subjects or to generate antibodies for a variety of uses, including passive immunization and diagnostic immunoassays.

Abstract: Compositions and methods include genetically encoding and expressing a novel delta-9 desaturase in plant cells. In some embodiments, methods of expressing nucleic acids in a plant cell to take advantage of the delta-9 desaturase enzyme's activity, such that the percent composition of saturated fatty acids in plant seeds is decreased and there is a concomitant increase in ?9 fatty acids. In other embodiments, amino acid sequences have delta-9 desaturase activity. Methods can involve expression of delta-9 desaturase in plant cells, plant materials, and whole plants for the purpose of increasing the amount of mono unsaturated fatty acids in whole plants, plant seeds, and plant materials, for example, seeds.

  • Publication number: 20150114633
Abstract: A methodology and system promote hydrocarbon production from a reservoir using steam assisted gravity drainage. The technique comprises deploying sensors in a subsurface environment containing the reservoir. The sensors are used to obtain data on properties related to a steam assisted gravity drainage region of the reservoir. Based on the data collected from the sensors, the amount of steam injected into areas of the reservoir may be adjusted to facilitate, e.g., optimize, production of hydrocarbons.

  • Patent number: 9011647
Abstract: A process for the plasma-assisted treatment of coal in which coal is directly converted to heavy hydrocarbons. The first step in the process is direct conversion of coal to aliphatic hydrocarbons under plasma conditions in the presence of light hydrocarbons, such as natural gas. In the second process step, the aliphatic hydrocarbons are upgraded to a liquid fuel. The energy for the process can be provided by radio frequency energy, such as microwave energy, that is powered by a renewable energy source. The process has flexibility to adjust aromatic content in the fuel to match fuel specification requirements.
