    Abstract: There is disclosed a process for the preparation of a lower alkyl ester of 3-(2-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoroprop-1-en-1-yl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid which comprises the steps of(a) reacting a compound of formula:CF.sub.3 --CXCl--CH(OH)--CH.dbd.C(CH.sub.3).sub.2 (I)wherein X is chloro or bromo, with a tri-lower-alkyl orthoacetate containing up to four carbon atoms in each alkyl groups in the presence of at least a catalytic amount of an acid catalyst at an elevated temperature for a sufficient time to obtain a compound of formula:CF.sub.3 --CXCl--CH.dbd.CH--C(CH.sub.3).sub.2 --CH.sub.2 CO.sub.2 R (III)wherein R is an alkyl group containing up to four carbon atoms, and(b) treating said compound of formula (III) with at least one molar equivalent of a base to obtain said alkyl ester of 3-(2-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoroprop-1-en-1-yl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid. The products are useful as intermediates for insecticides.

The products are useful as intermediates in the manufacture of pyrethroid insecticides.

    Abstract: A border treatment is supplied to an image which is to be processed by using an algorithm operation on a neighborhood surrounding each image pixel of the image. The border provides a high frequency high contrast area which appears to the image processing system as an undesirable area and which is eliminated thereby allowing an uninfluenced treatment of each of the pixels in an image including the pixels at the edges of an image. Any neighborhood influence resulting from border pixels near the edge of the image is eliminated because these border pixels appear as noise which is eliminated. The appearance of noise is due to the high frequency alternation of contrasting areas which are processed as noise and thereby eliminated.

    Abstract: A coating applicator for applying a layer of coating material around the circumference of a portion of an elongated shaft, such as a bolt. The applicator includes a chamber which is filled with coating material and has an opening for receiving the elongated member. The opening in the chamber has a cross-sectional dimension just slightly larger than the elongated member. A cover arranged within the chamber in sealing contact with the opening prevents leakage of coating material. This cover is retractable upon insertion of the elongated member into the chamber. Coating material then totally surrounds and coats the entire circumference of a limited longitudinal portion of the elongated member. The coated elongated member is subsequently removed from the chamber. As the elongated member is removed, the inner walls of the chamber which define the opening serve to remove excess coating material from the member and to smooth the layer of coating material.
