    Abstract: A character display control apparatus by which characters displayed in a superposed relationship with an image can be confirmed for a desired time even in a pause mode. A function of a pause button of a remote commander for remotely controlling a VTR is additionally allocated to a pause button of a remote commander for remotely controlling a decoder. When the pause button is manually operated, not only an infrared ray signal for putting the decoder into a pause condition but also an infrared ray signal for putting the VTR into a pause condition simultaneously are outputted. After the decoder is put into a pause condition, a character signal stored in an internal memory of the decoder is repetitively read out and displayed on a monitor. Further, since a signal reproduced from a video tape and outputted from the VTR is a video signal of a same frame, the image displayed on the monitor exhibits a pause condition.

Upon receipt of a recording operation instruction of a VTR 3 issued from a remote controller 2, a CPU 12 first turns ON a power supply of the VTR 3. Thereafter, such a message indicating that the inputted instruction corresponds to the recording operation of the VTR 3 is displayed on a CRT 17. When a user inputs an instruction for confirming this message via a remote controller 2, the CPU 12 instructs the VTR 3 to start its recording operation.

    Abstract: A recording apparatus for performing recording uses a carriage mounted with a recording head moving along a guide shaft. The recording apparatus includes a magnetic linear encoder consisting of a scale element magnetized and a detection unit for detecting magnetized information magnetized to the scale element. Provided also are clicks formed on any one of the detection unit and the carriage and click engaging portions formed in the other one of the detection unit and the carriage. The clicks engage with the click engaging portions, whereby the detection unit is snap-locked to the carriage. This enables the detection unit of the magnetic linear encoder to be readily attached to the carriage and besides, when attached, prevents disorder of the information magnetized to the scale element. Further, even when a position of the carriage shifts corresponding to sheets having different thicknesses, a sliding load of the carriage does not change.

    Abstract: A virtual machine control method for a supercomputer enables a plurality of virtual machines to use a vector processor. Control of the use of the vector processor is through the scalar processor. When a virtual machine requires use of the vector processor, it is first determined whether one of the other virtual machines operating systems is using the vector processor. If not, the scalar processor is dispatched to the operating system requesting use of the vector processor. If another virtual machine operating system is using the vector processor, then the operating system requesting use of the vector processor is placed in a wait state until the vector processor becomes free, whereupon the scalar processor is dispatched to the operating system that had been in the wait state. The condition of the vector processor being free can be communicated directly to the scalar processor without the intervention of the virtual machine monitor.

    Abstract: A process for the production of a low-sulfur diesel gas oil having a sulfur content of 0.05% by weight or lower and having a Saybolt color number of -10 or higher, from a petroleum distillate having a sulfur content of 0.1 to 2.0% by weight and having an inferior color and inferior oxidation stability comprises contacting the petroleum distillate with hydrogen in the presence of a hydro-treating catalyst which has at least one metal supported on said porous carrier, at a temperature of 350.degree. to 450.degree. C., and a pressure of 45 to 100 kg/cm.sup.2 in the first step to thereby produce materials having a sulfur content of 0.05% by weight or lower, and contacting further the materials issued from the first step with hydrogen in the presence of a hydro-treating catalyst which has at least one metal supported on said porous carrier, at a temperature of 200.degree. to 300.degree. C., and a pressure of 45 to 100 kg/cm.sup.2 in the second step to thereby produce the finished low-sulfur diesel gas oil.
