  • Patent number: 5069176
Abstract: In an internal-combustion engine, the light-metal cylinder head 1 is bolted together with the cylinder crankcase 2 by means of bolts 9, which extend in each case through a bore hole 10 in the cylinder head 1 and are bolted into a threaded borehole 11 in the cylinder crankcase 2. In order to keep the surface pressure, when the cylinder head bolts are tightened, at a level permissible for the light-metal alloy of the cylinder head 1 without using shims that require much space, a threaded sleeve 15 of steel, on the face 17 of which the head of the cylinder head bolt 9 is lying, is screwed into the borehole 10. The bearing surface for the force of the bolt is formed by the areas of the edges of the thread of the threaded sleeve 15. Accordingly, a sufficient area can be made available by an appropriate number of threads without the need to have the external diameter of the threaded sleeve 15 larger than the external diameter of the bolt head 12, 13.

  • Patent number: 4870990
Abstract: A double-flow butterfly valve part (1) contains two butterfly valves (4 and 6), which are connected together by means of a coupling element (10). The second butterfly valve (6) is opened only when the first butterfly valve (4) is moved beyond a partially open position into the completely open position. To make it possible to shift the two butterfly valves (4 and 6) back by means of a single restoring spring acting on the first butterfly valve (4), a desmodromic control is provided between the coupling element (10) and the second butterfly valve (6). For this purpose, a lever (9) is disposed on the shaft (7) of the second butterfly valve (6). This lever (9) contains an arched slot (12), which is engaged by a roller (13) mounted in the coupling element (10). The coupling element (10), in turn, is provided with an arched slot (14), which is engaged by a roller (15) mounted in the lever (9).

  • Patent number: 4838217
Abstract: A cast iron camshaft (1) for an internal combustion engine, has at one end a toothed pulley (3) engaging a toothed belt, and an internal tensile member including a screw threaded bolt (5). The bolt engages part of the camshaft (1) adjacent the end where the toothed pulley (3) is fixed, and extends along a longitudinal bore (6), and has a screw threaded end (8) which engages an internal thread (9) positioned adjacent the point where the bending moment exerted on the camshaft by the toothed belt tension P becomes zero. As a result, the alternating bending loads which would otherwise occur in the vicinity of the cross-section X--X which is in danger, are converted into a continuous compressive load, which can be sustained by the cast iron material more effectively than an alternating bending load.

  • Patent number: 4776307
Abstract: On a multi-cylinder combustion engine with two overhead camshafts 7, 8, sprocket wheels 9 and 10 are mounted on the camshafts between adjacent cams in such a way that they are engaged by a drive chain 12 in opposite directions with an arc of contact exceeding 90.degree.. The chain 12 is driven by a drive sprocket 13 which is connected to a gear 14, which in turn is engaged with gear teeth 15 on the crankshaft 3. The non-driving strand of chain 12 is guided above sprocket wheel 9 by a curved guide rail 16, which is also designed to serve as a chain tensioner.

  • Patent number: 4745892
Abstract: In an internal combustion engine, the cylinder head 1 is screw-fastened to the cylinder crank case 2 by means of differential screws 8, each of which has two threaded sections 11 and 12, of which section 11 has a larger outside diameter and a smaller pitch than the second section 12. The threaded sections 11 and 12 cooperate with corresponding internal threads 13 or 10 in the cylinder head 1 or in the cylinder crank case 2. As a result of the different pitches of the two threaded sections 11 and 12, there occurs a joint tensioning of the cylinder head 1 with the cylinder crank case 2, without a bearing surface for a screw head or a nut being required. The space requirement for the cylinder head fastening thereby becomes exceptionally small, so that the fastening can be provided at points, for example, between adjacent valves, at which no space would otherwise be available for a bearing surface for screw heads or nuts.

  • Patent number: 4699092
Abstract: In a fluid-cooled cylinder head for a series of cylinders of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine provided with a combustion chamber for each cylinder, the cooling water chambers co-ordinated with the individual combustion chambers are separated from each other, so that individual small casting cores can be used instead of a large casting core forming all the cooling water chambers of the cylinder head. The appropriate number of small casting cores can be inserted into the mould according to the number of cylinders, so that cylinder heads for cylinder blocks with different numbers of cylinders can be manufactured, using several casting cores. The cooling water chamber for each combustion chamber is so designed that a single unipart casting core can be used, which is so shaped that the cooling water is directed against the wall of the combustion chamber and against the sparking plug dome.

  • Patent number: 4543925
Abstract: In order to be able to enlarge the width of web 13 between adjacent valve seating rings 6 of a light-alloy cylinder head 1 for reciprocating internal combustion engines, an external diameter D1 of valve seating surface 11 at the valve seating ring is selected, which is smaller than the external diameter D2 of the total valve seating surface 7. In order nevertheless to give valve seating ring 6 the required strength, the smallest internal diameter D4 is smaller than the internal diameter D3 of the valve seating surface. Throttling the flow is avoided by a transition from D4 to D3, which is advantageous to flow.
