Patent number: 4971212Abstract: A tamper indicating package comprising a container having a finish with external threads thereon and a plastic closure comprising a base wall and a peripheral skirt. The closure has a tamper indicating band connected to the skirt along a weakened line and has at least one flange extending upwardly and inwardly for engagement with a retaining bead on the container. The flange is hinged to the band along a first hinge at one end extending circumferentially of the band and along a second hinge at an angle to the first hinge. The other end of the flange circumferentially spaced with respect to the second hinge is free such that when the closure is applied to the container the flange flexes over the retaining bead on the container until the free edge of the flange extends beneath the retaining bead on the container and when the closure is rotated to remove the closure, the flange prevents the band from being removed and causes severing of the band along the weakened line.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1989Date of Patent: November 20, 1990Assignee: Owens-Illinois Closure Inc.Inventor: Maximillian Kusz

Patent number: 4957210Abstract: A child resistant closure comprising outer and inner nested closure members each of which has a base wall and a peripheral skirt with sets of lugs on the inner surface of the outer base wall and the outer surface of the inner base wall adapted to engage each other when the outer closure is rotated for application to a container, but slip or cam past each other on inclined surfaces when the outer closure is rotated for removal. At least one integral spring finger extends from one base wall toward the other base wall such that the outer closure member is held out of engagement with the inner closure member. To remove the closure, the outer closure member must be pressed downward, while simultaneously being rotated. The camming action of the lugs is then resisted by a frictional engagement of corners of the lugs on the outer closure with inclined surfaces on the lugs on the inner closure.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1989Date of Patent: September 18, 1990Assignee: Owens-Illinois Closure Inc.Inventor: Maximillian Kusz

Patent number: 4759456Abstract: A tamper-indicating package that includes a blown glass container or blow molded plastic container, and a molded thermoplastic closure that is affixed to the finish portion of such container. The finish portion of the container has a radially outwardly projecting bead at the bottom portion of such finish portion. The closure has a flexible tab that originally extends outwardly and downwardly from the top of a notch in the skirt of the closure, and is foldable through the notch in the skirt of the closure to engage the underside of the bead in the finish of the container. The closure tab is attached to the closure skirt by a frangible connection, and separates from the closure skirt by the fracture of such frangible portion during the removal of the closure from the container, since the tab is prevented by its engagement with the container bead from being removed with the other elements of the closure.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1986Date of Patent: July 26, 1988Assignee: Owens-Illinois Closure Inc.Inventor: Maximillian Kusz

Patent number: 4645087Abstract: Five embodiments of a tamper indicating molded plastic band that locks over a ledge on the closure and beneath a flange on the container. The cylindrical band is molded with continuous locking rings or interrupted tabs joined adjacent the top end bottom edge thereof and which extend inwardly and generally toward each other to form mechanical locking members. Depending upon the particular arrangement of the locking rings on the tamper indicating band, the band would be applied to the closure before or after threaded application to the container. The band may be used with a plastic or metal closure and with a plastic, metal or glass container having a threaded neck and outwardly extending radial flange therebelow beneath which the ring or tab will lock.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 1985Date of Patent: February 24, 1987Assignee: Owens-Illinois, Inc.Inventor: Maximillian Kusz

Patent number: 4485932Abstract: A child resistant package comprising an open-mouth container having a plurality of circumferentially spaced projections extending radially outwardly adjacent the open end thereof, each projection defines a notch facing downwardly, and a closure having a top panel and an annular skirt depending from the periphery of the top panel, and a plurality of radially inwardly extending and circumferentially spaced locking lugs on the inner surface of the skirt. The locking lugs are adapted to engage the notches in the projections on the container. A tamper-indicating member comprises an annular ring having portions extending between the lower edge of the skirt of the closure and a portion of the container and operable to normally limit axial movement of the closure. The ring offers a visual indication that the contents have not been tampered with and the ring must be removed before the closure can be removed. The container includes a specially designed inclined surface provided with dual slopes.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1983Date of Patent: December 4, 1984Assignee: Owens-Illinois, Inc.Inventor: Maximillian Kusz

Patent number: 4399921Abstract: A child resistant closure and container comprising a container, a finish fitment rotatably mounted on the open end of the container, and a closure having a top wall and a skirt. Threads between the finish fitment and the skirt require relative rotation to disengage the closure from the finish fitment. The finish fitment includes a top portion interposed between the top wall of the closure and the container such that the top wall of the container engages the top portion of the finish fitment. The fitment and the closure are rotatable relative to said container and said threads are disengageable only when said fitment is manually grasped and prevented from rotating relative to the container. The container includes projections that engage notches in the fitment to prevent rotation of the fitment during threading of the closure so that the fitment need not be held manually during the application of the closure.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 1982Date of Patent: August 23, 1983Assignee: Owens-Illinois, Inc.Inventor: Maximillian Kusz

Patent number: 4385705Abstract: A two-piece child-resistant closure comprises nested inner and outer closure members. Sets of lugs on the inner surface of the outer member panel and the outer surface of the inner member panel engage each other when the outer members rotated for application of the closure to a container, but cam past each other on inclined surfaces when the outer closure is rotated in the removal direction. The panel of the outer closure member is resiliently deformable to bring the noncamming surfaces of the lugs into engagement for removal of the closure.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1981Date of Patent: May 31, 1983Assignee: Owens-Illinois, Inc.Inventor: Maximillian Kusz

Patent number: 4346809Abstract: A convertible child-resistant closure comprises an outer closure and an inner resilient liner. When applied to a cooperating container in the child-resistant mode, the resilient liner is distorted between the container rim and abutments formed on the outer closure panel, thereby providing an upward locking bias to the closure. The upper surface of the liner includes depressions adapted to receive the abutments only when the liner and the outer closure are in a particular relative angular orientation. To convert the assembly to a closure which is not child-resistant, the liner is removed and reoriented so that the abutments are received within the depressions, thereby preventing the abutments from distorting the liner to provide the locking bias.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1981Date of Patent: August 31, 1982Assignee: Owens-Illinois, Inc.Inventor: Maximillian Kusz

Patent number: 4026656Abstract: An improved device for detection of stones in the sidewalls of glass containers. Stones in the sidewalls of glass containers cause stress patterns to be formed. These patterns are visible if the glass container is viewed through crossed polarizing filters due to the refraction of polarized light. A television camera and electronic analysis circuit may be substituted for the human eye. The detection capability and reliability of the system is improved if the glass container is illuminated with primarily infra-red radiation. Then, polarizing filters which polarize infra-red radiation and remove visible light are used. A filter before the television camera lens removes far infra-red radiation and allows only near infra-red radiation to be measured. This makes the device insensitive to glass color, flutes or stippling and improves the signal to noise ratio.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1975Date of Patent: May 31, 1977Assignee: Owens-Illinois, Inc.Inventors: Maximillian Kusz, Sam Lovalenti
