  • Patent number: 10369748
Abstract: A method for solid state joining of dissimilar materials using a friction stir welding device wherein a pin is inserted through an aperture defined in a first material and a second material to hold the materials together and then held in place by friction stir welding a portion of the pin to a material adjacent said pin, or by friction stir welding a cap or plug that holds the pin in place to the adjacent material. The result is a connection or join wherein the central portion of the pin is not friction stir welded but the portions holding the pin in place (the ends or caps) generally are.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 26, 2017
Date of Patent: August 6, 2019
    Assignee: BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE
Inventors: Scott A. Whalen, Md. Reza-E-Rabby, Kenneth A. Ross, Aashish Rohatgi

  • Publication number: 20180311713
Abstract: A process for forming extruded products using a device having a scroll face configured to apply a rotational shearing force and an axial extrusion force to the same preselected location on material wherein a combination of the rotational shearing force and the axial extrusion force upon the same location cause a portion of the material to plasticize, flow and recombine in desired configurations. This process provides for a significant number of advantages and industrial applications, including but not limited to extruding tubes used for vehicle components with 50 to 100 percent greater ductility and energy absorption over conventional extrusion technologies, while dramatically reducing manufacturing costs.

  • Patent number: 8265039
Abstract: A method and apparatus for facilitating handoff operations in a wireless communication device is provided. The method may comprise receiving, by a wireless communication device, a plurality of pilot signals, wherein the plurality of pilot signals includes an active pilot signal and one or more candidate pilot signals, selecting at least one nominal active pilot signal strength value for comparison with the active pilot signal, classifying the one or more candidate pilot signals into a respective one of a plurality of tiers based on a handoff factor corresponding to the at least one candidate pilot signal, wherein the plurality of tiers are divided according to one or more handoff factors, and selecting at least one threshold handoff value for each of the plurality of tiers, wherein the at least one threshold handoff value partly depends on one of the at least one nominal active pilot signal strength values.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 5, 2009
Date of Patent: September 11, 2012
    Assignee: QUALCOMM Incorporated
Inventors: Ashrafur Md. Reza, Qingxin Chen, Reza Shahidi, Rajeev Subhash Kurundkar
