  • Publication number: 20060262544
Abstract: Modular lighting fixtures that allow convenient installation and removal of LED-based light-generating modules and controller modules. In one example, a modular lighting fixture includes a housing configured to be recessed into or disposed behind an architectural surface such as ceiling, wall, or soffit, in new or existing construction scenarios. The fixture housing includes a socket configured to facilitate one or more of a mechanical, electrical and thermal coupling of the light-generating module to the fixture housing. The ability to easily engage and disengage the LED-based light-generating module with the socket, without removing the fixture housing itself, allows for straightforward replacement of the light-generating module upon failure, or exchange with another module having different light-generating characteristics.

  • Patent number: 7088040
Abstract: Upconversion methods and devices that converts near-infrared light to the visible spectrum using a rare-earth-doped crystalline host for use as general and decorative lighting. The pseudo-monochromatic output of the processes can be specified by altering the amount and type of rare-earth material used and by selection of an appropriate host. Using rare-earth materials such as ytterbium-erbium or ytterbium-thulium can produce red, green and blue emissions, where the additive mixture of these colors yields a high-quality white light. The materials can be adjusted to achieve white light with any color temperature and high color-rendering index (CRI) for any general and decorative lighting applications both indoors and outdoors.

Abstract: Methods and compositions for using an up-conversion phosphor as an emitting material in a reflective displays and Polymer compositions for display mediums, and blue green red (BRG) display mediums. Roles of the pumping duration and character on the temperature and the efficiency of the up-conversion process in (Ytterbium, Erbium or Thulium) co-doped fluoride crystals are set forth. Methods, compositions and display mediums for using up-conversion phosphors in both reflective and transmissive displays in which the substrate and pixel shapes are designed to maximally remove heat deposited in the emitting material and thereby improve the efficiency of up conversion.
