Publication number: 20140353530Abstract: A dual usage HCG VCSEL detector is provided with a high contrast grating (HCG) reflector first reflector that has a two dimensional periodic structure. The two dimensional structure is a periodic structure that is a symmetric structure with periodic repeating. The symmetrical structure provides that polarization modes of light are undistinguishable. A second reflector is in an opposing relationship to the first reflector. A tunable optical cavity is between the first and second reflectors. An active region is positioned in the cavity between the first and second reflectors. The photodetector is polarization independent. An MQW light absorber is included converts light to electrons. Patent number: 8877288Abstract: A process for coating a front and back surface of an industrial textile to increase its abrasion resistance is disclosed. The coating process comprises the steps of coating the textile with a coating compound, heating coated textile at a temperature of 120 degree Celsius and drying the coated textile for 60 seconds. Two passes of coating is applied for the process wherein the viscosity for first pass of coating is 21000 centipoise and the viscosity for second pass of coating is 12000 centipoise. On completion of the coating process, the coated textile is treated with a water repellent agent. The coating compounds used for the process are comprised of formulations including two polyurethane compositions, which are mixed with a methyl ethyl ketone solvent, and the water repellent agent is silicone. The overall process requires a curing time of 2 minutes with a curing agent.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 2010Date of Patent: November 4, 2014Assignee: AKKO GlobalInventors: Michael Chung Wen Shih, Arthur Ming Jing Chen

Publication number: 20130201328Abstract: Systems are provided for receiving the video data from the camera. In one embodiment, a system is provided to compare, for all frames of the video, one frame with another frame of the video data, to determine if there are dynamic objects between the two frames, wherein the determination is based on movements of corresponding pixels between the two frames; filtering out the dynamic objects in each frame; applying special effects to highlight the dynamic objects by coloring the dynamic objects in each frame; applying special effects to grey out static objects, or the non-dynamic objects, by coloring the static objects in each frame where the dynamic objects are found.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 8, 2012Publication date: August 8, 2013Inventor: Hing Ping Michael CHUNG

Patent number: 8442374Abstract: Optical waveguides using segmented periodically-spaced high contrast gratings bounding a hollow core propagation region on at least two sides. Incident light is received in a hollow waveguide (HW) region (core) between opposing HCG faces which provide lateral confinement in response to glancing reflections of the incident light beam from high refractive index segments of the HCG as it traverses the core. Embodiments are described for planar waveguides (1D) having a planar core between two planar HCGs, as well as 2D waveguides, such as having rectangular segments of the HCG through which light is propagated. Additionally, other configurations of HCG-HW, including those having arbitrary incidence and azimuth, angled HCG segments, propagation in a direction which is transverse, or alternatively parallel, to the segments of the HCG.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 2011Date of Patent: May 14, 2013Assignee: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Connie Chang-Hasnain, Ye Zhou, Vadim Karagodsky, Forrest G. Publication number: 20130039791Abstract: The present invention relates to a scroll pump (10) comprising a pump housing (12), a drive shaft having a concentric shaft portion (14) and an eccentric shaft portion (16) connected to an orbiting scroll (20). The shaft is arranged to be driven by a motor (18) so that during use rotation of the shaft imparts an orbiting motion to the orbiting scroll relative to a fixed scroll (22) for pumping fluid between a pump inlet (24) and pump outlet (26) of the compressor. The fixed scroll has an opening through which the shaft extends and is connected to the orbiting scroll on an opposing side of the fixed scroll to the motor. A high vacuum region is located on an orbiting scroll side of the scroll arrangement and a low vacuum region is located generally on a fixed scroll side of the scroll arrangement.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 7, 2011Publication date: February 14, 2013Applicant: EDWARDS LIMITEDInventors: Nigel Paul Schofield, Michael Chung Kau Liu

Patent number: 8189643Abstract: A vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) is described using a sub-wavelength grating (SWG) structure that has a very broad reflection spectrum and very high reflectivity. The grating comprises segments of high and low refractive index materials with an index differential between the high and low index materials. By way of example, a SWG reflective structure is disposed over a low index cavity region and above another reflective layer (either SWG or DBR). In one embodiment, the SWG structure is movable, such as according to MEMS techniques, in relation to the opposing reflector to provide wavelength selective tuning. The SWG-VCSEL design is scalable to form the optical cavities for a range of SWG-VCSELs at different wavelengths, and wavelength ranges.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 2010Date of Patent: May 29, 2012Assignee: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Connie J. Chang-Hasnain, Michael Chung-Yi Huang, Ye Zhou, Carlos Fernando Rondina Mateus

Publication number: 20120051893Abstract: A vacuum pump rotor suitable for use in a vacuum pump is described for a vacuum pump that comprises a regenerative pumping mechanism. The rotor has a generally disc-shaped configuration and is mounted on an axial shaft for rotation relative to a stator of a vacuum pump. The rotor has a first and second opposing surface on which a rotor formations are disposed, each rotor formation defining a portion of a pump stage formed between the pump rotor and a stator for pumping gas from an inlet to an outlet in the same radial direction along the first and second opposing surface. A conduit is provided to interconnect the portions of the pump stage and assist with pressure imbalance that might occur on opposing sides of the rotor.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 18, 2010Publication date: March 1, 2012Applicant: EDWARDS LIMITEDInventors: Nigel Paul Schofield, Michael Chung Kau Liu
