  • Patent number: 6725464
Abstract: A rotary joint used for armored diving suits which joint allows rotary motion and which seals the internal portions of the diving suit from the high pressure water in which the user is operating. The rotary joint allows axial movement during operation and reduces premature seal failure due to moments created about the axis of the joint which are prevented from reaching the seals allowing rotating movement. In the event of seal failure, a fail-safe sealing system comprising back up seals not used during normal suit operation is used to isolate the internal portions of the diving suit from water ingress.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 6641832
Abstract: An angiogenic material is prepared which promotes extensive vascularization when implanted in animal tissue. The angiogenic material is preferably used in microcapsule coatings and microspheres for implantation in animals. In microcapsules, the angiogenic material promotes better exchange of nutrients, waste products and cellular products between encapsulated cells and the circulatory system of the host animal. Preferably, the angiogenic material consists of a biocompatible polymer and a vascularizing compound consisting of polymerizable compounds capable of forming anions. Microspheres containing the angiogenic material may be used to assist in recovery of ischemic heart muscle by injection of the microspheres into the heart muscle or blood vessels serving the ischemic area. Also disclosed is a method of forming small microcapsules and microspheres by passing cell aggregates or air bubbles through layers of a density gradient.

  • Patent number: 4479687
Abstract: The invention provides an electrical distribution system comprising a length of conduit 10 containing a plurality of continuous conductors. Electrical access to the conductors is achieved via a contact plug and a series of spaced entry apertures which are shaped to receive the plug in a particular orientation. Safety door means are provided within the conduit for each aperture and are designed to prevent contact with the conductors by means other than the correct contact plug. In one embodiment of the invention, the conduit is in two parts comprising a support section for securing to a supporting surface, and a wall section containing the entry apertures. The wall section can be connected to the support section at any desired location along its length.

  • Patent number: 4462650
Abstract: An electrical distribution system comprises a longitudinally-extending conduit containing a plurality of continuous conductors. Spaced apertures are provided in one wall of the conduit to allow access to the conductors for a connecting plug. A safety mechanism is provided at each entry point substantially to prevent access to the conductors by means other than a correct connecting plug, and to facilitate assembly and servicing of the system this safety mechanism comprises a unitary assembly which can be inserted into or removed from the conduit as a self-contained unit.

  • Patent number: 4243284
Abstract: The invention comprises an electrical distribution system in which the electrical conductors are enclosed within a length of hollow conduit which is formed with a continuous slot in one wall through which a plug can be inserted and rotated to bring its contact pins into contact with the conductors. Gate means located within the conduit have a normally closed position in which the conductors are closed off from that part of the conduit containing the slot, and these are movable into the open position by entry of the plug through the slot. By closing off the conductors from the remainder of the conduit, accidental contact with the conductors is prevented even though access to the interior of the conduit may be achieved via the slot. In one embodiment of the invention, a keyway is provided in the conduit and the plug is formed with a corresponding projection which engages the keyway when the plug is fitted into the slot.

  • Patent number: 4077218
Abstract: A joint, subject to a pressure differential between inside and outside, having two tubular members flexibly joined by couplings comprising an annular piston sliding within an annular cylinder containing an incompressible fluid, a fluid reservoir connected to and at a higher pressure than the cylinder interior and valve means responsive to fluid loss from the cylinder allowing fluid flow from reservoir to cylinder. The valve may comprise two semi-circular arms pivoted at their ends to each other and to the piston or cylinder, the arms operating on opposite ends of a rocker plate attached centrally to a valve plunger. A differential piston maintains the high reservoir pressure. The valve is adjustable to operate at a predetermined value of cylinder fluid volume.
