  • Publication number: 20160277685
Abstract: A system and method of remote imaging allows a camera module in a modular portable electronic device environment to be removed from a base module without halting an image capture session being displayed on a display of the base module. In an embodiment, image data may be captured by both the camera module and the base module. A hardwired connection connects the devices when the camera module is docked on the base module, while a wireless connection maintains the connection between the devices when the camera module is undocked from the base module during an image capture session.

  • Publication number: 20160248401
Abstract: A system and method of tuning an antenna of a portable device in a modular device system using a device ID associated with second device to tune one or more antennas of a first device. In an embodiment, the first device resolves the device ID of the second device to a set of tuning parameters which improve tuning of the antenna of the first device in the presence of the second device. In a further embodiment, the first device may also tune an antenna of the second device to improve its performance in the presence of the first device.

  • Publication number: 20160249466
Abstract: A device interconnection system uses an indexed carrier to locate an array of contacts on an array of solder pads on a printed circuit board. In an embodiment, the PCB is indexed to a device housing in the same manner that it is indexed to the carrier, allowing the array of contacts to match and protrude through an array of holes in the housing. In a further embodiment, the housing is substantially metallic, and the array of holes in the housing are located in an insulating plate formed in the housing.

  • Publication number: 20160223589
Abstract: A system and method of circuit board and device construction provide an RF testing connection for thin devices that lack space between their printed circuit board (PCB) and their housing for a test connection. In particular, in designs wherein the device PCB lies against the rear housing of the device, the use of a dedicated test connector on the back of the main PCB is problematic, but a circuit configuration is provided such that a removable test connection can be used without affecting the operation of the device or the configuration of the PCB itself.

  • Publication number: 20160226130
Abstract: An enhanced portable communication device includes a one-piece metal back plate, configured to reduce device thickness by eliminating the plastic-to-metal joints normally needed to isolate the device antennas and provide rigidity. The one-piece metal back plate includes four integral antennas in an embodiment, forming an antenna pair at each end of the device. An opening and gap used to form each antenna pair may be filled with a nonconductive material such as plastic. In an embodiment, an I/O port is exposed through the nonconductive material in the gap.

  • Publication number: 20160037846
Abstract: An adjuster for adjusting a length of a cord is provided. The adjuster comprises a t-component having a sliding member and a cross member that are integrally formed to form, at least, a first angle. In response to an application of force, the t-component is adapted to move from a first position to a second position, which increases the first angle. The adjuster also comprises a channel body that has a recessed cavity that is adapted to receive the cross member when the t-component is moved from the first position to the second position. The channel body further comprises a sliding channel, where the sliding member is slidably engaged with the channel body within the sliding channel. A first guide channel extending from a first side surface of the channel body to the sliding channel is also a component of the channel body.

  • Patent number: 9250729
Abstract: A method for manipulating graphical user interface elements includes displaying a plurality of elements on a touch screen of an electronic device. Based on a first touch screen contact detected on a first side of the electronic device and a slide contact detected on a second side of the electronic device, a first touch screen element is selected and the non-selected touch screen element(s) are manipulated relative to the first element. The slide contact can be interpreted by the electronic device as a drag, push, or rotate relative to the first element. Various features of the slide movement, such as the speed, the length, the pressure, the direction, and/or the pattern may affect the manipulation of the non-selected elements.

  • Publication number: 20150243202
Abstract: An electronic device has multiple sides. In some implementations, at least two of the sides are pivotable with respect to one another. The device may have a display that wraps from one side to the other. In some implementations, the device has multiple display drivers and each display driver is responsible for driving a different pixel region. The device may enable and disable one or more of the drivers based on an angle between the sides of the device. Two or more of the pixel regions may overlap, with one or more drivers being capable of driving the pixels of the overlapping region. The pixels or pixel regions that are enabled may be selected based on the angle between the sides of the device.

  • Publication number: 20150186933
Abstract: An electronic device performs a method for advertising using a frequency of spoken word database. The method includes sending a plurality of observation phrases to a plurality of mobile devices and receiving, from a subset of the plurality of mobile devices for each observation phrase in a subset of the plurality of observation phrases, at least one utterance statistic that indicates how often the utterance of observation phrase was detected by the subset of the plurality of mobile devices over a time period. The method further includes building a frequency of spoken word database including the subset of the plurality of observation phrases each having associated therewith a set frequency of utterance values derived from the at least one utterance statistic received for that observation phrase. The frequency of spoken word database is used to determine at least one advertisement and linked observation phrase to send to a mobile device.

  • Publication number: 20150186706
Abstract: A method for operating an electronic device is provided, in which the device detects contact with a user's finger, scans its fingerprint and sets the orientation of the electronic device based on the fingerprint (e.g., whether is from the user's left hand or right hand) and on an angle of the fingerprint with respect to the device. This allows the electronic device to determine its orientation with respect to the user rather than with respect to the environment.
