  • Publication number: 20140272958
Abstract: Devices and methods generate an ordered restriction map of genomic DNA extracted from whole cells. The devices have a fluidic microchannel that merges into a reaction nanochannel that merges into a detection nanochannel at an interface where the nanochannel diameter decreases in size by between 50% to 99%. Intact molecules of DNA are transported to the reaction nanochannel and then fragmented in the reaction nanochannel using restriction endonuclease enzymes. The reaction nanochannel is sized and configured so that the fragments stay in an original order until they are injected into the detection nanochannel. Signal at one or more locations along the detection nanochannel is detected to map fragments in the order they occur along a long DNA molecule.

  • Publication number: 20140276680
Abstract: Some embodiments disclosed here provide for a method fragmenting a cataractous lens of a patient's eye using an ultra-short pulsed laser. The method can include determining, within a lens of a patient's eye, a high NA zone where a cone angle of a laser beam with a high numerical aperture is not shadowed by the iris, and a low NA zone radially closer to the iris where the cone angle of the laser beam with a low numerical aperture is not shadowed by the iris. Laser lens fragmentation is accomplished by delivering the laser beam with the high numerical aperture to the high NA zone, and the laser beam with the low numerical aperture to the low NA zone. This can result in a more effective fragmentation of a nucleus of the lens without exposing the retina to radiation above safety standards.

  • Publication number: 20140262260
Abstract: A sand control device is used for restricting the flow of particles from a subsurface formation into a tubular body within a wellbore during production operations. The sand control device is divided into compartments along its length that provide redundancy for particle filtration. Each compartment first comprises a base pipe. The base pipe defines an elongated tubular body having a permeable section and an impermeable section within each compartment. Each compartment also comprises a first filtering conduit and a second filtering conduit. The filtering conduits comprise filtering media and generally circumscribe the base pipe. The filtering conduits are arranged so that the first filtering conduit is adjacent to the non-permeable section of the base pipe, while the second filtering conduit is adjacent to the permeable section of the base pipe.

  • Publication number: 20140267697
Abstract: A method and device for real-time mechanical and dosimetric quality assurance measurements in radiation therapy provides a unified measurement of mechanical motion and radiation components of the machine. The device includes an imaging surface for receiving multiple energy sources. The imaging surface has an imaging plane positioned on a same plane as an isocenter of a medical accelerator. A camera measures and records data related to the multiple energy sources. A mirror system can be used to direct the multiple energy sources to the camera for further processing. However, in some instances the mirror system may not be necessary. Accordingly, a single device can be used to unify the measurement of mechanical motion and radiation component of the machine. The device can also include computer control in order to automate the movement of the device and/or automation of the QA protocol.

  • Publication number: 20140273845
Abstract: A method and apparatus to facilitate pairing between a first wireless device and a second wireless device includes a pairing apparatus for determining (304) an address of the second wireless device and writing the address to the first wireless device to bypass an address discovery process between the first and second wireless devices. The pairing apparatus also initiates (312) removal of an input and output capability indication in at least one of the first wireless device or the second wireless device to control an association model type that is applied during a pairing process, between the first and second wireless devices, which uses the address of the second wireless device. The removal of the input and output capability indication is reversed (318) upon confirming (316) a successful pairing between the first and second wireless devices.

  • Publication number: 20140263925
Abstract: A tipover prevention and seismic securement system for securing furniture and appliances from tipping over. The system employs mounts which are engaged to a surface of an article to be secured. A planar belt having apertures therein provides a tether between the mount through an engagement with projections on the mount and apertures in the belt at a first end and a securement position at a second end. Translating members secure the belt in its engagement to the mount. The translating members once engaged must be unlocked to allow removal thereof and subsequent removal of the belt.

  • Publication number: 20140267003
Abstract: A system provides non-contact communication between a controller and a medical device. The control signal may be a wirelessly transmitted control signal, such as a wireless radiofrequency signal and/or an optical or acoustic signal, for example. An interface device is provided that may be a remote controller or switch that may be used by a user, such as a health care practitioner (HCP), in connection with navigating and activating screens of a dialysis machine during a dialysis treatment without requiring the HCP to physically contact the dialysis machine. With the described system, the HCP does not need to re-glove each time a change is made to an on-going dialysis treatment when interfacing with a graphical display of the dialysis machine.
