  • Patent number: 8713359
Abstract: Server supervisor processes in the segment nodes of a database cluster afford transparent reset mechanisms to a fault tolerant service (FTS). FTS probes only primary segments as to their status unless a primary segment does not respond, in which case FTS will probe the mirror of that primary-mirror pair, and change the state of the mirror to primary if the primary is faulty. Only a primary segment to initiate a reset of its mirror segment and then resets itself. If a mirror segment fails, it shuts down and its corresponding primary segment will report the failure to FTS. Transient communication failures are addressed by retry logic on FTS probing, and not reported to FTS. Reset is not initiated by FTS and preserves the segment state in the absence of errors.

  • Patent number: 8713077
Abstract: A system and method caches and distributes meta-data for one or more data containers stored on a plurality of volumes configured as a striped volume set (SVS) and served by a plurality of nodes interconnected as a cluster. The SVS comprises one meta-data volume (MDV) configured to store a canonical copy of certain meta-data, including access control lists and directories, associated with all data containers stored on the SVS, and one or more data volumes (DV) configured to store, at least, data content of those containers. In addition, for each data container stored on the SVS, one volume is designated a container attribute volume (CAV) and, as such, is configured to store (“cache”) a canonical copy of certain, rapidly-changing attribute meta-data, including time stamps and container length, associated with that container.

  • Patent number: 8711956
Abstract: A communications system may include a first communications device that may include a transmitter and a modulator cooperating therewith to modulate a coded waveform using a constant phase modulation (CPM) to generate a non-linear CPM waveform, and generate a linear representation of the non-linear CPM waveform, the linear representation including a plurality of pulses. The transmitter and a modulator may further cooperate to remove at least some of the plurality of pulses to define a modified linear representation of the non-linear CPM waveform, and transmit the modified linear representation of the non-linear CPM waveform. The communications system may further include a second communications device that may include a receiver and a single pulse-matched filter linear demodulator cooperating therewith to demodulate the modified linear representation of the non-linear CPM waveform transmitted from the first communications device.

  • Patent number: 8713024
Abstract: Methods and computer storage media are provided for generating entries for documents in a forward index. A document and its document identification are received, in addition to static features that are query-independent. The document is parsed into tokens to form a token stream corresponding to the document. Relevant data used to calculate rankings of document is identified and a position of the data is determined. The entry is then generated from the document identification, the token stream of the document, the static features, and the positional information of the relevant data. The entry is stored in the forward index.

  • Patent number: 8713516
Abstract: A system and method is presented that leverages independent innovation in entertainment content and graphics hardware. In this system and method, the current image generation run-time application is replaced with a new framework defining the connectivity, features, and behavior necessary to implement a graphics system. All this takes place in the context of a software platform utilizing a late-integration mechanism that dynamically integrates the various real-time components in a run-time application. Ultimately displacing hardware as the central focus of development efforts, this software platform functionally is the graphics application, at least as viewed by the simulation host computer, database developers, and those responsible for visual system procurement and maintenance. An innovative software architecture, the Graphical Application Platform (GAP) is presented.

  • Patent number: 8713548
Abstract: Mechanisms are provided for rewriting branch instructions in a portion of code. The mechanisms receive a portion of source code having an original branch instruction. The mechanisms generate a branch stub for the original branch instruction. The branch stub stores information about the original branch instruction including an original target address of the original branch instruction. Moreover, the mechanisms rewrite the original branch instruction so that a target of the rewritten branch instruction references the branch stub. In addition, the mechanisms output compiled code including the rewritten branch instruction and the branch stub for execution by a computing device. The branch stub is utilized by the computing device at runtime to determine if execution of the rewritten branch instruction can be redirected directly to a target instruction corresponding to the original target address in an instruction cache of the computing device without intervention by an instruction cache runtime system.

  • Patent number: 8712069
Abstract: An audio processing system processes an audio signal that may come from one or more microphones. The audio processing system may use information from one or more non-acoustic sensors to improve a variety of system characteristics, including responsiveness and quality. Especially those audio processing systems that use spatial information, for example to separate multiple audio sources, are undesirably susceptible to changes in the relative position of any audio sources, the audio processing system itself, or any combination thereof. Using the non-acoustic sensor information may decrease this susceptibility advantageously in an audio processing system.

  • Patent number: 8707642
Abstract: A sheet member fastening system and kit, as well as methods of hanging sheet members on a framework for a wall or ceiling surface are described. Fastening members, comprising substantially flat members and corner members are usable to enable edges of standard sheet members, such as wallboard or the like, to be properly supported and attached adjacent one another by means of the fastening members. The use of the fastening members enables hanging of sheet members on the framework without cutting of the sheet members or measuring of the relationship of the sheet member to the underlying framework, except adjacent a corner of the wall/ceiling surface. The fastening members allow attachment of the edges when not positioned directly on a frame member to properly secure the edges relative to one another. The fastening members are made of a material to accept fastening devices such as screws, staples, nails or the like to secure the sheet members thereto.

  • Patent number: 8708600
Abstract: In one embodiment, dispersants are injected directly into a plume of oil in a subsea environment. The dispersant is supplied from a vessel, through a tubular string and flows through a routing manifold into a flexible hose. The hose then transports the dispersant to a distribution manifold, which is disposed on the sea floor, and permits injection of dispersants at multiple locations at the same time around the leaking oil. Injection of dispersants from the distribution manifold may be through injection wands, or the dispersant may be transferred to a containment or collection device located above the plume of oil, wherein nozzles are disposed around the circumference of such containment or collection device. If the dispersants are injected into the leaking oil through injection wands, such wands may be held and/or manipulated by an ROV.
