  • Publication number: 20130253358
Abstract: A tool for telemedicine including an improved breath collection system of human breath to facilitate the analysis of volatile organic components (VOCs) contained in human breath in which breath tests can be performed at remote sites for rapid detection of different diseases. The system can include a standoff breath collection device including an arcuate structure for concentration and analysis of volatile organic components (VOCs) at the point-of-use that avoids the use of mouthpieces found in conventional breath collection apparatuses.

  • Patent number: 8521663
Abstract: The value of a target variable is predicted by obtaining historical values for the target variable at each of several time points and obtaining previously predicted values and currently predicted values for each of several predictor variables, the predictor variables being different from the target variable. Values are assigned to parameters of a forecasting model to obtain the best fit of the previously predicted values for the predictor variables to the historical values for the target variable. Finally, a value of the target variable is predicted from the currently predicted values for at least a subset of the predictor variables using the forecasting model and the values assigned to the parameters of the forecasting model.

  • Publication number: 20130211113
Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatuses for extracting non-polar lipids from microalgae are achieved using a lipid extraction device having an anode and a cathode that forms a channel and defines a fluid flow path through which an aqueous slurry is passed. An electromotive force is applied across the channel at a gap distance in a range from 0.5 mm to 200 mm to cause the non-polar lipids to be released from the algae cells. The non-polar lipids can be extracted at a high throughput rate and with low concentrations of polar lipids such as phospholipids and chlorophyll.

  • Patent number: 8494940
Abstract: New metrics are provided for evaluating a portfolio of financial assets and/or for determining whether or not the portfolio is properly tracking the performance of a desired index. The technique involves calculating a correlative value for the portfolio relative to each of a number of different factors having data values that are likely to be correlated with an aggregate market value for the portfolio, where the correlative value for an item relative to a given factor is a measure of a tendency of the aggregate market value of the item to change based on a change in the data value for such factor (e.g., in the nature of a sensitivity or elasticity). Such metrics often can be used, according to the present invention, in conjunction with other information to facilitate the adjustment of the portfolio to more closely track the performance of the desired index.

  • Publication number: 20130098036
Abstract: A hybrid solar/non-solar thermal generation system includes a solar concentrator and collector, and fiber optic cables that transfer collected solar radiation to a solar to thermal converter. The solar to thermal converter converts the solar radiation to heat that is used to augment the heating of a working fluid in a boiler. The system has particular application for use in Rankine cycle power generation plants that employ non-solar sources to heat the working fluid.

  • Publication number: 20130066801
Abstract: Midrange values, which may be, for example, midpoint values, may be derived and provided for use in identifying spread opportunities. A first midrange value disposed between a bid price and a ask price is derived for the first financial instrument. A second midrange value disposed between a bid price and a ask price is derived for a second financial instrument. A computing system then derives from the first and second midrange values a midrange spread value representing a difference between the first and second midrange values. Information identifying the first financial instrument including the first midrange value, information identifying the second financial instrument including the second midrange value, and the midrange spread value are communicated for display.
