    Abstract: A device and method for securing a tablecloth to a picnic table. Multiple strips of elastic with hook and loop type fasteners at opposed ends of each strip, which provide releasable closure of the strips into binding bands, wrap around the tablecloth and secure it to the picnic table. The releasable closure means allow the strips to be threaded through and under the supporting framework for a table or other article of furniture. The strips are sized and constructed for application to a wide range of different sized tables and other outdoor furniture.

    Abstract: An improved package for a semiconductor device. The semiconductor device includes an apparatus having at least two access leads to facilitate electrical connection of the apparatus within an electrical circuit. The package has generally a closed polyhedral shape presenting a plurality of faces and substantially insulatingly surrounding the apparatus in a manner leaving the access leads exposed for effecting electrical connection. The access leads extend a distance from exit loci from the package. The exit loci are situated on an exit face of the package, adjacent pairs of exit loci being generally in a common plane. An intraplanar distance within the common plane is established intermediate each adjacent pair of the exit loci. The improvement comprises configuring the exit face to establish an on-surface path greater than the intraplanar distance intermediate selected adjacent pairs of the exit loci.

    Abstract: A system an method for managing wire leads that extend from a circuit board of a similar electronic assembly. The device includes a support tray having a top surface and a bottom surface. The circuit board is mounted to the top surface of the support tray. A planar element is provided that is positioned below the bottom surface of the support tray. The planar element engages the wire leads extending from the circuit board. The presence of the planar element causes the wire leads to extend along the bottom surface of the support tray between the bottom surface of the support tray and the planar element. As a result, the wire leads conform to the bottom of the support tray and do not occupy the space behind the circuit board.

    Abstract: A multi-fiber ribbon-coupled multi-channel, optical amplifier architecture has a very compact form factor that facilitates one-for-one alignment with and coupling to each optical fiber of a multi-fiber ribbon. A dual substrate structure contains a first substrate having a signal transport core laminated with a second substrate having an associated pumping energy-receiving, pseudo-cladding layer. This use of separate substrates prevents dopant material of the signal transport core from intruding into the pseudo-cladding material. The bulk layers are polished and laminated so that the signal transport core is in intimate face-to-face abutment with the pseudo-cladding layer. The back side of the bulk containing the pseudo-cladding material is lapped and polished to expose pseudo-cladding material, and provide a generally planar surface that facilitates coupling of the pseudo-cladding layer (and its abutting core) with a pumping energy source.

    Abstract: A radiation sensor. The inventive sensor has a two-level detector structure formed on a substrate in which a thermal detector element is suspended over the substrate as a microbridge structure. A receiver of electromagnetic radiation is provided on the same side of the substrate in a manner that efficiently couples the radiation field to the thermal detector element. The thermal detector element has a sandwich structure including a heater metal layer, a dielectric layer, and a thin film thermo-resistive material. The thermal detector element is suspended out of physical contact with the receiver. In one embodiment, the receiver is an antenna having a crossed bowtie configuration that efficiently couples the radiation field to the detector element. The inventive radiation sensors are especially useful for mm-wave and microwave sensing applications. The sensor can be used individually or in linear or two-dimensional arrays thereof.

    Abstract: Footwear intended primarily for outdoor use, wherein a variety of ground conditions are likely to be encountered, has a sole with traction elements inspired by the hoof of a mountain goat. In several embodiments, an interior region of the sole is provided with a plurality of pairs of relatively soft protruding pods, while a perimetric region surrounding the interior region includes a plurality of relatively hard lugs provided on opposite sides of the pod pairs. The pods extend downwardly below the lugs such that they will make initial ground contact and compress. The compression cushions initial impact and increases the area of ground contact to improve traction on firm smooth surfaces. The compression also brings the lugs into ground engagement, following initial contact, to improve stability and traction on irregular and soft ground surfaces. Other embodiments of the invention implement similar principles, in soles having a more conventional (less goat hoof-like) appearance.

    Abstract: Synchronizing wireless base stations by reception of a synchronization signal that is transmitted in an unused B channel of an ISDN link interconnecting a switching network and the base stations. The synchronization signals are generated by the tone circuit of the switching network which advantageously is a digital signalling processor (DSP). Each base station is interconnected to the switching network via two basic rate interface (BRI) links. Each base station can handle a maximum of three wireless handsets thus leaving one of the four B channels present in the two BRI links unused. It is this unused link that is utilized to transmit the synchronization signals from the switching network to the base stations. Furthermore, the switching network is configured in such a manner that all base stations receive the synchronization signals at the same time over the unused B channels.

    Abstract: A numerically controlled milling machine is used to mill the surface of a coined spinnerette after punching and before broaching the holes in the spinnerette. A probe is mounted on the milling machine to obtain data points on the bumpy surface of the coined spinnerette. The low points in predetermined areas off of the protuberances on the bumpy surface of the coined spinnerette are detected. Splines connecting the low points in, e.g., concentric rings if the holes in the finished spinnerette will be in rings, are used to generate a representation of the finished surface. A spiral tool path is obtained using the representation of the finished surface and G-codes are generated to control the milling machine to move a tool along the tool path. After the coined spinnerette has been milled, conventional finishing, including broaching is performed.

The method includes steps of (a) providing a transparent substrate (12); (b) growing on the substrate an electrically conductive buffer layer (14), an n-type radiation absorbing layer (16), and a p-type cap layer (18) forming a p-n junction; and (c) etching first trenches through the cap layer, the radiation absorbing layer, and partially through the buffer layer for forming initial mesa structures each having a top surface, a base, and sloping sidewalls that terminate in the buffer layer. The method further (d) forms a passivating layer (22) on the sloping side walls; (e) forms an electrical contact (24) that surrounds the bases of the initial mesa structures and that makes an ohmic contact with a surrounding portion of the buffer layer; and (f) etches a plurality of second trenches through exposed portions of the buffer layer and into the substrate.

    Abstract: A carbon fiber carbon matrix hybrid adsorbent monolith with enhanced thermal conductivity for storing and releasing gas through adsorption and desorption is disclosed. The heat of adsorption of the gas species being adsorbed is sufficiently large to cause hybrid monolith heating during adsorption and hybrid monolith cooling during desorption which significantly reduces the storage capacity of the hybrid monolith, or efficiency and economics of a gas separation process. The extent of this phenomenon depends, to a large extent, on the thermal conductivity of the adsorbent hybrid monolith. This invention is a hybrid version of a carbon fiber monolith, which offers significant enhancements to thermal conductivity and potential for improved gas separation and storage systems.

The weight of the two facing rigid brace supports coupled with their inwardly top slanted orientation causes the engaged rigid brace support frame members forming the openings to bear against and frictionally hold the inserted board members to the two spaced brace supports.
