Publication number: 20160031184Abstract: A panel-insert assembly including a panel having a core and a skin layer positioned over the core, wherein the skin layer defines an opening therein, and an insert positioned below the skin layer, wherein the insert is aligned with the opening.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 29, 2014Publication date: February 4, 2016Inventors: Michael S. Lewis, Jessica Sakurai, Brad J. Reeves

Publication number: 20160001996Abstract: A web roll handling and loading system and methods employ hubs positioned on opposing sides of a roll of web material wound on a hollow tubular core. Hub faces have an annular shape configured to be seated in respective ends of the hollow tubular core. The hubs are pivotably supported for pivoting between an operational position and a deflected position. The roll of web material is loaded on the hubs by lifting it from beneath the hubs to deflect the hub faces arcuately upward, then lowering the roll to allow the hub faces to pivot downward and become seated in the ends of the hollow tubular core. Alternatively, the roll is loaded into a pick-up tool by lowering the pick-up tool downward to the roll so the hubs deflect arcuately upward, then raising the tool so the hubs pivot downward and become seated in the hollow tubular core.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 2, 2014Publication date: January 7, 2016Applicant: The Boeing CompanyInventors: JESSE P. HOWARD, MICHAEL S. LEWIS

Publication number: 20140355282Abstract: Aircraft passageway storage units are disclosed herein. An example apparatus includes a storage assembly to be supported on a floor of an interior of a fuselage of an aircraft. The storage assembly has a corner to be adjacent a passageway of the interior of the fuselage, and the passageway is to extend around the corner. The example apparatus also includes a door coupled to the storage assembly. The door extends from a first side of the storage assembly to a second side of the storage assembly and defines a portion of the corner. The door is to cover an opening of a compartment of the storage assembly when the door is in a closed position, and the opening is to extend from the first side to the second side.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 25, 2014Publication date: December 4, 2014Applicant: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Nathanial C. Cuddy, Chris Gren McInelly, Roland Mair, Russell W. Keck, Michael S. Lewis, Daniel Rivera, Tushar Mayur Sampat, Derrick Joseph Hanratty, Harold Glenn Erickson, Mitchell Kotlik, Timothy Mark Jones

Patent number: 8376284Abstract: Systems and methods for tracing aircraft vortices. One method includes directing a tracer from a first aircraft into a vortical flow generated by the first aircraft. The method can further include detecting a characteristic corresponding to the presence of the tracer directed into the vortical flow. Based at least in part on the detected characteristic, the method can include directing the flight of the first aircraft, or a second aircraft following the first aircraft, or both.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 2009Date of Patent: February 19, 2013Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Michael S. Lewis, Jere S. Meserole, Michael J. Dunn, Brian J. Tillotson

Patent number: 8312754Abstract: A method of making a composite panel. A panel is formed by sandwiching a core between first and second facesheets. A longitudinal slot is formed in the panel passing through the first facesheet into the core, including forming a pair of curved flanges in the core. A bend is formed in the panel by bending the panel about the longitudinal axis of the slot, including bringing the curved flanges substantially into conformal engagement with the second facesheet.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 2008Date of Patent: November 20, 2012Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Michael S. Lewis, Guy W. Roets
-
Patent number: 8245467Abstract: A joint apparatus and method of assembly is disclosed for connecting building components such as panels, door jamb assemblies, windows and other structures. The apparatus includes an engagement structure with retaining elements that couple building components without the need for mechanical fasteners. The retaining element may contain serrations on which an adhesive is applied before a panel or other building component is secured to the joint apparatus. Other building components such as hinge assemblies include coupling members with a flange. The slots along a retaining element allows coupling members to snap fit into the joint apparatus once a flange is secured into the slots in order to lock the components.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 2009Date of Patent: August 21, 2012Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Michael S. Lewis, Bryan A. Branscome, Dean W. Habersetzer, Chris G. McInelly

Patent number: 7883057Abstract: In one embodiment, a device for hanging a ceiling panel may include a clevis for attachment to a support structure, and a hinge for attachment to the ceiling panel. The clevis may include a pin and a first locking member. The hinge may include an elongated slot and a second locking member. The elongated slot may be adapted to be slid over the pin of the clevis. The second locking member may be adapted to engage the first locking member to lock the hinge and the ceiling panel into position.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 2007Date of Patent: February 8, 2011Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventor: Michael S Lewis

Patent number: 7877197Abstract: Systems and methods for actively seeking and generating real-time, conflict-checked, operationally preferred flight trajectory revision recommendations are disclosed. The system analyzes air traffic based on a plurality of uniquely integrated inputs, to produce at least one conflict-checked, operationally preferred flight trajectory revision opportunity for an operating vehicle, and a communications component configured to communicate the at least one conflict-checked flight trajectory revision. In one embodiment, the system interfaces with the airspace user's operations center (e.g. Airline Operations Center), to communicate the operationally preferred flight trajectory revision opportunity, and allow the operator to make the decision whether to implement, and request the same from the Air Navigation Service Provider.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 2007Date of Patent: January 25, 2011Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Michael S. Lewis, Reza T. Holland
