  • Patent number: 8925463
Abstract: A high velocity munition comprises a projectile, mounted on a cartridge case, that can be fired from an automatic cannon or weapon. During storage or transport an IM venting device included in the cartridge case prevents the propellant charge from firing the projectile, leaving the cartridge damaged, but intact upon premature ignition. The IM vent exhaust channel is filled with a solid fusible material that melts at a lower temperature than the ignition temperatures of the igniter (or primer) and the propellant charge of the projectile. At least one non-fusible, ruptureable member is included in the IM vent channel and positioned to provide structural integrity to the fusible material in the channel. Alternatively or in addition to the fusible material, a shape memory alloy ring surrounds the igniter (or primer) and separates from the cartridge when the cartridge reaches a temperature that causes auto-ignition.

  • Patent number: 8893456
Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing mail is provided. Mail is placed into an input been having a conveyor that conveys the mail towards a feeder. The feeder serially feeds the envelopes to a cutter that severs the top edge of the envelopes. A transport conveys the envelopes from the top cutter to an extractor. The extractor opens the edge-severed mail and presents the contents of the envelopes to an operator who manually extracts the contents. From the extractor, the operator manually feeds the extracted documents to a document input. From the document input, the documents are fed to a document transport that conveys the documents past an imaging module to obtain image data for the documents before sorting the documents to output bins.

  • Publication number: 20140310399
Abstract: A user obtains, views and stores image data of a selected celestial object from a network of available telescopes using a computer-generated user interface. Based on the selected object, information is accessed regarding each telescope from data sources such as databases and/or live data feeds to automatically select telescopes that are suitable for imaging the object, e.g., according to factors such as telescope type, power and configuration, location, weather conditions, visibility, and altitude. The user may select a particular telescope and imaging time from a schedule of available telescopes and imaging times. At the scheduled time, an image is recorded of the celestial object and communicated to a central data store for access by the user, e.g., via a web site.

Abstract: A direct field acoustic testing system provides an acoustic field having a higher degree of spatial uniformity. The system includes a control microphone, a controller, a combiner, and at least four acoustic transducers. The controller is operatively coupled to the control microphone such that the controller receives at least one input signal from the control microphone and provides at least four separately controllable controller output signals. The combiner combines the at least four separately controllable output signals to form at least four secondary output signals, each composed of combinations of one or more of the at least four separately controllable controller output signals. Each of the at least four transducers is operatively coupled to at least one of the at least four secondary output signals such that the output of the transducer varies in response to changes in at least two of the at least four separately controllable controller output signals.

  • Publication number: 20140283706
Abstract: A training ammunition projectile has a solid chemical component disposed in a base compartment that produces a gaseous visible plume after impact. The ammunition cartridge generates kinetic energy while propelling the projectile through a weapon barrel. This firing process imparts heat into a projectiles driving band. When the projectile is in flight, heat passes from the projectile's driving band into a compartment in the projectile housing the chemical component. When the component is exposed to increasing heat and low pressure, the it undergoes rapid sublimation. The projectile is configured with a vent opening in its base for emergence of the gaseous plume during flight. The opening is preferably capped to allow for stable storage and to prevent any gas from escaping until the projectile is fired.

  • Publication number: 20140279056
Abstract: An intelligent platform for real-time bidding (RTB) includes a bidder that allows for the association of additional private or proprietary information with each bid it receives, and allows advertisers to filter impressions based on a rich set of attributes. The bidder can be used to bid across many ad exchanges using the same augmented bidding criteria. The system can have crawlers that include virtual web browser rendering for analysis to allow the system to determine location on a page, a size of the video, how it is played, and information about content in the video. The crawlers can include a browser-specific rendering crawler, which can determine browser-specific behavior.

  • Publication number: 20140227932
Abstract: A flying toy figurine includes a main body having an upper body portion, a lower body portion and a middle body portion, the middle body portion including a waist portion and a hip portion. A center shaft connects the upper body portion to the lower body portion, and the waist portion and the hip portion are mounted for independent rotation about the center shaft. A motor drives a rotor assembly, including at least two main propeller blades, located in the waist portion in one direction for imparting vertical aerodynamic lift to the figurine. Rotation of the waist portion in one direction causes the hip portion to counter-rotate in the opposite direction. The center shaft is not connected to the waist portion or the hip portion and therefore rotation of the upper body portion and lower body portion remains independent of the rotation of the waist portion and the hip portion.
