Patent number: 9756529Abstract: A method and system for coordinated dynamic access to radio spectrum for wireless networking includes defining a coordinated access band (CAB) from which radio access network (RAN) managers may request spectrum allocations in the form of time bound spectrum leases for their respective requesting base stations. In one embodiment of the present invention, a DIMSUMnet architecture is implemented to make some fundamental choices and to centralize the collection of information, such as spectral occupancy, thermal and adjacent frequency interference. Such collected information is subsequently used by a spectrum broker in making spectrum allocation decisions. The DIMSUMnet architecture of the present invention also introduces a RAN manager element to centralize the task of acquiring time bound spectrum leases and for configuring the base stations.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 2015Date of Patent: September 5, 2017Assignee: Alcatel LucentInventors: Milind M. Buddhikot, Paul Kolodzy, Scott C. Miller

Patent number: 9553709Abstract: A method and an apparatus is provided for conducting wireless data communications using whitespace and non-whitespace channels. A short-range base station with an interface for whitespace channels and another interface for non-whitespace channels communicates with user equipment outfitted with equivalent interfaces. The short-range base station has a preference for using the interface for the whitespace channels, where the whitespace channels are whitespace spectrum bands that are available during periods when a primary user is not actively utilizing the whitespace. A spectrum server analyzes spectrum occupancy database information and whitespace spectrum sensing measurements to determine lists of available whitespace spectrum bands for use by the short-range base station.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 2013Date of Patent: January 24, 2017Assignee: Alcatel LucentInventors: Milind M. Patent number: 9473287Abstract: According to a disclosed method, an MME in a network analyzes KPIs from the cells it serves and based on the KPIs, it decides to engage in sharing. The MME then contacts a sharing entity (SE) to announce that it wants to borrow or to supply resources. The MME obtains terms of a sharing agreement from the SE and the MME obtains the identity of the other network. In response to this information, the MME configures its network elements to share. The MME's own network may be a supplier or a borrower. If the network is a supplier, the MME configures its base stations to support UEs subscribing to the other network. If the network is a borrower, the MME configures its UEs to accept service from the other network's base stations. The SE applies knowledge of network topology and of services offered. This knowledge is obtained from a sharing database. At the expiration of the sharing agreement, the SE tells the MMEs to deactivate the sharing agreement.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 2013Date of Patent: October 18, 2016Assignee: Alcatel LucentInventors: Jignesh S. Panchal, Milind M. Buddhikot

Patent number: 9414235Abstract: The invention includes a method and apparatus for dynamically allocating spectrum available within a region including a plurality of base stations. The method includes obtaining a plurality of spectrum demands associated with at least a portion of the base stations, each spectrum demand requesting a portion of the available spectrum, and determining a plurality of spectrum allocations satisfying at least a portion of the spectrum demands. The spectrum allocations are determined by processing the spectrum demands using network information such as base station information associated with the base stations and region information such as terrain information associated with the region. The region information may include signal propagation information.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2015Date of Patent: August 9, 2016Assignees: Alcatel Lucent, Stevens Institute of TechnologyInventors: Milind M. Publication number: 20160219588Abstract: First user equipment transmits information identifying first interfaces supported by the first user equipment and first channel capacities associated with the first interfaces. The first user equipment receives information identifying a subset of the first interfaces. The subset is selected based on the first channel capacities and second channel capacities of second interfaces associated with at least one second user equipment. The first user equipment is then configured to aggregate the subset of the first interfaces. A policy server selects a subset of first interfaces supported by a first user equipment based on information indicating first channel capacities of the first interfaces and second channel capacities of second interfaces associated with at least one second user equipment. The policy server transmits instructions to the first user equipment to aggregate the subset.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 27, 2015Publication date: July 28, 2016Inventors: Milind M. Buddhikot, Lance Hartung

Patent number: 8451797Abstract: A mobile node includes a processor, a network interface, and a storage device having computer program code for execution by the processor. The computer program code includes a network layer for transmitting and receiving packets and an intermediate driver that transmits packets to the network layer and receives packets from the network layer using a virtual interne protocol (IP) address to identify the mobile node. The intermediate driver transmits packets to the network interface and receives packets from the network interface using a routable actual IP address to identify the mobile node. The intermediate driver permits the actual IP address to change when the mobile node moves from a first subnet to a second subnet without a corresponding change in the virtual IP address. A corresponding NAT associates the virtual IP address with a second actual IP address when the NAT is notified that the mobile node is in the second subnet.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 2009Date of Patent: May 28, 2013Assignee: Alcaltel LucentInventors: Milind M.
