Patent number: 11417360Abstract: The present disclosure generally relates to a magnetic recording device having a magnetic recording media guide support system with a load-unload mechanism. The magnetic recording media guide is positioned between the magnetic head assembly and at least one guide roller, and moves a magnetic recording media surface closer to and further from the magnetic head assembly. The magnetic recording media guide is movable in a direction perpendicular to a direction that the magnetic recording media moves past the magnetic head assembly. The magnetic recording media guide is stationary in relation to the magnetic recording media when the magnetic recording media moves past the magnetic head assembly while a magnetic head is positioned to read data from or write data to the magnetic recording media. Additionally, the magnetic recording media guide can planarize the magnetic recording media surface on the magnetic head.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 2021Date of Patent: August 16, 2022Assignee: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Minoru Shimada, Masahito Kobayashi, Kenji Kuroki

Patent number: 8537488Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention help to reduce damage of a head element portion or a magnetic disk in a procedure for specifying a heater power value for adjusting a clearance between the head element portion and the magnetic disk. In an embodiment of the present invention, an HDC/MPU sequentially performs data writing and reading while increasing heater power. The HDC/MPU further determines whether or not a head slider has retrieved the data properly. When the data cannot be retrieved properly, the HDC/MPU specifies a heater power value in a normal operation based on the heater power value at which the data could not be retrieved properly.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 2008Date of Patent: September 17, 2013Assignee: HGST Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Yasunori Kawamoto, Minoru Shimada, Masahiro Etoh, Takuma Ito

Patent number: 7852583Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention allow for a precise altitude to be calculated from read-out signals of a head slider. In one embodiment, a hard disk controller/multiprocessing unit (HDC/MPU) determines a head element portion in which the instability has occurred in accordance with the resolution change. The HDC/MPU adjusts the clearance accordingly. The head element portion reads signals of different frequencies under a condition of the signal strengths coinciding with a reference value, and the HDC/MPU calculates the resolution. The HDC/MPU determines that the instability has occurred if the difference is outside the criterion. The HDC/MPU uses the read-out signal of a head slider in which the instability has not occurred to calculate the altitude.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2008Date of Patent: December 14, 2010Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, Netherlands, B.V.Inventors: Yoshiaki Uji, Minoru Shimada, Ryoh Miura, Takahiro Watanabe, Toyomi Ohsawa, Noriaki Satoh

Patent number: 7636217Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention efficiently conduct a test for detecting defects on a magnetic disk more accurately. According to one embodiment, a HDD carries out defect inspection of a magnetic disk using thermal fly height control (TFC). Changing a clearance by the TFC achieves defect inspection tests under varied test conditions without much decrease of throughput in manufacturing HDDs. First, a self analysis test (SAT) is carried out in a state that a heater power of P2 is supplied to a heater. Then, another SAT is carried out in a state that a heater power of P1 is supplied to the heater. The heater power P2 is larger than the heater power P1.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 2007Date of Patent: December 22, 2009Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Yoshiaki Uji, Fujio Harako, Minoru Shimada, Ryoh Miura

Patent number: 7075407Abstract: A temperature sensor has lead lines made of an elastic material each attached to a corresponding one of electrodes on a temperature sensing element such as an NTC thermistor element. The lead lines may each have a non-straight part where they are bent or deformed into a semi-circular shape such that, when these lead lines are inserted into throughholes prepared through a circuit board, the non-straight parts are hooked at the throughholes and the portions of the lead lines above the circuit board will stand up obliquely. Instead of lead lines, a pair of elongated planar lead terminals each with a twisted top end part may be connected to the electrodes such that the top end parts of the pair of lead terminals face each other and can support the temperature sensing element more securely in between.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 2000Date of Patent: July 11, 2006Assignee: Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd.Inventors: Tetsuya Kawamoto, Hideki Yamada, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, Minoru Shimada, Kingo Ohmura, Asami Wakabayashi

Patent number: 6052243Abstract: A magnetic disk unit is provided with a storage device for storing a signal output value in each position on a first circumference of a magnetic disk, and a contact detector for relating a signal output value in each position on a second circumference of the magnetic head slider to each position on the first circumference. The latter signal output values are standardized by dividing by the corresponding signal output value stored in the storage device. Contact between the magnetic disk and the magnetic head slider is detected if the standardized output exceeds a preset reference value. The contact detector outputs a signal for instructing an actuator control circuit to move the magnetic head slider to a predetermined home position if contact between the magnetic disk and the magnetic head slider is detected.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 1997Date of Patent: April 18, 2000Assignee: NEC CorporationInventor: Minoru Shimada

Patent number: 5153797Abstract: A head pad having a drawing face which draws a flexible disk used for an electronic still camera, for example, by negative pressure and which is made so that the head, which moves along the radial direction of the disk so as to record or reproduce data on the disk, projects out on the drawing face, wherein said depressions are formed in the drawing face around the head and corner portions of the bottom faces of the depressions are further cut away to form undercut portions, thus facilitating generation of a greater negative pressure between the disk and the pad drawing face and enabling greater improvement of the head touch and enabling greater stabilization of the drawing force of the disk by the pad.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1991Date of Patent: October 6, 1992Assignee: Sony CorporationInventors: Minoru Shimada, Takashi Fukushima, Akio Kimura, Tokio Kanada, Hideyuki Hirano

Patent number: 4604662Abstract: A mechanism for use in a cassette tape recorder automatically changes the mode of the recorder when the end of the tape is reached by sensing the cessation of rotation of the pinch roller. A mode change lever having an elongated hole with converging sides that receives a cylindrical portion of the pinch roller is biased by a spring so that the cylindrical portion engages the converging sides and the mode-change lever tends to rotate in a first direction. Once the pinch roller ceases to rotate, the mode-change lever is moved in a direction opposite the first direction and so that it cooperates with a mode-change drive assembly rotated by the capstan. The mode-change lever is then displaced and releases a mode key, so that the mode of the recorder is changed and is typically shut off.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1984Date of Patent: August 5, 1986Assignee: Sony CorporationInventors: Mitsuru Ida, Minoru Shimada
