  • Patent number: 8606417
Abstract: Segmenting a power distribution network comprising AC power generating stations synchronously interconnected by AC power transmission paths. The stations operate within market sectors and are subject to market rules. The method includes identifying all transmission paths which extend between differing ones of the sectors and segmenting the path by inserting a controllable DC link in the path. Each of the sectors is then operated asynchronously. Power flow and counter-flow between the sectors is controlled by controlling the DC links. A power transmission network is disclosed comprising AC power generating stations operable within market sectors subject to market rules; power transmission paths interconnecting the stations, at least some of the paths extending between differing ones of the sectors, including a controllable DC link in the path for desynchronizing the differing sectors; and, control means operatively connectable to each of the DC links for controlling power flow between the differing sectors.

  • Patent number: 8590204
Abstract: The fishing rod with casting mechanism enables an angler to cast a lure or the like by cocking or arming the mechanism and pressing the release. The device includes a central stock having a lower brace and upper tubular member spaced apart from the lower brace, with forward and rearward plates connecting the brace and tube. A spinning reel is installed between the lower brace and upper tube. A coil compression spring and a plurality of elastic tensile members in tandem therewith is installed in the upper tubular member. A telescoping rod extends from the forward plate, and a handle extends from the rear plate. The mechanism propels a projectile (lure, sinker, float, etc.) and tackle (hook, lure, etc.) when the compressed spring and extended elastic bands are released. The projectile draws the fishing line from the reel. The projectile and tackle are reeled in conventionally after the cast.

  • Patent number: 8563352
Abstract: Low-relief texture can be created by applying and firing frit paste on a silicon surface. Where frit contacts the surface at high temperature, it etches silicon, dissolving silicon in the softened glass frit. The result is a series of small, randomly located pits, which produce a near-Lambertian surface, suitable for use in a photovoltaic cell. This texturing method consumes little silicon, and is advantageously used in a photovoltaic cell in which a thin silicon lamina comprises the base region of the cell. When the lamina is formed by implanting ions in a donor wafer to form a cleave plane and cleaving the lamina from the donor wafer at the cleave plane, the ion implantation step will serve to translate texture formed at a first surface to the cleave plane, and thus to the second, opposing surface following cleaving. Low-relief texture formed by other methods can be translated from the first surface to the second surface in this way as well.

  • Publication number: 20130261993
Abstract: Various systems and methods for detecting air in a chamber of an infusion system are disclosed. In one embodiment, a determination is made that air is contained in the chamber on the basis of a change in the average force exerted against the plunger utilizing a derivative spike for event detection and a systematic reduction in the average force to confirm the nature of the change. In another embodiment, a determination is made that the chamber contains air when a difference between the current force profile and a baseline force profile crosses a threshold. In an additional embodiment, a force profile is classified as being an air force profile or a liquid force profile based on extracted features of the force profile.

  • Patent number: 8518724
Abstract: A semiconductor assembly is described in which a support element is constructed on a surface of a semiconductor lamina. Following formation of the thin lamina, which may have a thickness about 50 microns or less, the support element is formed, for example by plating, or by application of a precursor and curing in situ, resulting in a support element which may be, for example, metal, ceramic, polymer, etc. This is in contrast to pre-formed support element which is affixed to the lamina following its formation, or to a donor wafer from which the lamina is subsequently cleaved. Fabricating the support element in situ may avoid the use of adhesives to attach the lamina to a permanent support element. In some embodiments, this process flow allows the lamina to be annealed at high temperature, then to have an amorphous silicon layer formed on each face of the lamina following that anneal.

  • Publication number: 20130037289
Abstract: A electric hammer includes a generally pistol shaped housing with a grip portion, a barrel portion and an electric motor and battery pack disposed in the grip portion. The motor includes an output shaft that extends upwardly into the barrel portion, a cylindrical drum fixed to the shaft with a generally flat upper surface and peripheral edge. The drum in the shape of a right circular cylinder includes a cavity or short passageway extending from the upper surface into the interior thereof. A longitudinally extending rod with a short transverse portion extending into the cavity so that the rotation of the drum provides reciprocal movement of the rod causing a hammer head to repeatedly strike a nail head. An important feature of the hammer resides in a tubular member with a tapered bore running through the barrel portion of the electric hammer allowing for limited lateral movement of the elongated rod as it repeatedly strikes the head of a nail with a solid metal hammer head.

  • Patent number: 8359397
Abstract: Embodiments of a system and method for establishing reliable connections between peers in a peer-to-peer networking environment. In one embodiment, a reliable communications channel may use transmit and receive windows, acknowledgement of received messages, and retransmission of messages not received to provide reliable delivery of messages between peers in the peer-to-peer environment. In one embodiment, each message may include a sequence number configured for use in maintaining ordering of received messages on a receiving peer. A communications channel may make multiple hops on a network, and different hops in the connection may use different underlying network protocols. Communications channels may also pass through one or more firewalls and/or one or more gateways on the network. A communications channel may also pass through one or more router (relay) peers on the network. The peers may adjust the sizes of the transmit and receive window based upon reliability of the connection.
