  • Patent number: 8727016
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention relate to an apparatus and methods for enhanced well control in slim completions. An embodiment can include an electrical submersible pump (“ESP”) positioned within a casing and having at least a portion thereof extending outwardly from a production tubing positioned within the casing. The production tubing terminates adjacent a distal end portion of a pump discharge to thereby provide greater interstitial space between outer surfaces of the portion of the pump disposed to extend outwardly from the production tubing and inner walls of the casing. This increased interstitial space, for example, can assist in cost savings by reducing the rate of erosion damage to the ESP. Embodiments of the present invention can further include a valve connected to inner walls of the casing and positioned distal from the ESP to control the flow of hydrocarbons.

  • Patent number: 8689892
Abstract: An apparatus for controlling fluid pressure, useful in the production of hydrocarbons from underground reservoirs comprises at least one conical segment. A conical segment comprises: an inner conical cylinder with a central axis; an outer conical cylinder, outside of, and coaxial with, the inner conical cylinder; and a swirl chamber disposed between a conical outer surface of the inner conical cylinder and a conical inner surface of the outer conical cylinder. There is a fluid entrance through a wall of the outer conical cylinder of at least one conical segment at an upstream end of the apparatus for directing fluids into such conical segment's swirl chamber. There is also a fluid exit through a wall of the inner conical cylinder of at least one conical segment at a downstream end of the apparatus for directing fluids out of such conical segment's swirl chamber.

  • Patent number: 8613311
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing erosion and friction losses in a wellbore using a power cabled deployed electric submersible pump (ESP). The apparatus can include an ESP disposed within production tubing, wherein a portion of the production tubing surrounding the ESP contains fluid openings that are operable to allow produced fluids to flow outward, thereby increasing the available volume for the produced fluids. The increased volume results in lower fluid velocities of the produced fluid, which advantageously reduces erosion and friction loss.

  • Publication number: 20130259721
Abstract: An electrical submersible pump assembly for use in a well, including a well having a high gas-to-liquid ratio has a motor, a hollow, tubular drive shaft which drives the pump, and a liquid-gas separator assembly upstream of the pump intake. The liquid-gas separator has a hollow tubular portion, which communicates with the open, lower end of the drive shaft, openings through its sidewall, and a closed lower end. The sidewall also includes at least one outwardly extending projection shaped for urging liquid contained in a liquid/gas mixture flowing towards the pump outwardly, away from the sidewall openings. Preferably, the outwardly extending projection comprises a helical blade which, using either the well casing or a separate sheath, defines a helical channel through which the oil-gas mixture flows prior to reaching the pump intake.

  • Patent number: 8453742
Abstract: An apparatus and method for selectively delivering a fluid to a targeted area through the use of vortices that are experiencing Taylor-Couette flow. Rotation of the outer surface of a body of the apparatus causes fluid within the annular area between a wellbore and the outer surface to form opposing vortices, which can then be used to selectively deliver the fluid to the targeted area, such as areas of low permeability of a reservoir, in order to improve flow characteristics of a producing area.

  • Publication number: 20130086994
Abstract: A flow system based on pulsating mechanism that has better accuracy compared to conventional vortex meters due to the fact that the pulsations generated have increased signal response and lower frequency, both of which are favorable for a high accuracy measurement. Certain embodiments include a housing, a bluff body, an orifice plate, and means for detecting a pulsating frequency of pulsating flow and determining the fluid flow rate based on the detected pulsating frequency. In certain embodiments, the housing can include an outer shell, an inlet, and an outlet.
