  • Patent number: 9429012
Abstract: A downhole salinity measurement and logging sensor system has multiple cells, each to measure conductivity, temperature and pressure of fluids at depths of interest in a wellbore. The multiple cells protect against effects of non-homogeneous wellbore fluids. The system also determines salinity of the liquid in the wellbore from conductance measurements, and stores the salinity data along with the temperature and pressure readings from the well. The sensors of conductivity, temperature and pressure are made using micro-fabrication technologies, and the system is packaged to comply with harsh downhole environments. The system may be deployed in the well with coiled tubing (CT), wireline or vehicles with a robotic system. The system can be deployed with an onboard memory, or with wireline surface access for real time access to measurement data or programming the device.

  • Patent number: 9424674
Abstract: Tomographic reconstruction is performed of cross-sectional images of downhole or surface multiphase flows containing water (brine), oil, and gas phases. Measures are obtained of digital transmission (or analog attenuation) and also of analog transit time to form two views of the same cross sectional flow in a location of interest in a flow conduit. The measures are then merged by synthesizing a composite image of the multiphase flows. Rather than performing a complex tomographic reconstruction requiring a large number of calculations, measures are also obtained directly from the tomographic pattern which can be used to reconstruct an approximation of the cross sectional flow by the superposition of circles of variable position, radius and density representing flow patterns.

  • Patent number: 9404781
Abstract: Ultrasound tomography arrays and vortex shedding devices are provided which measure average flow velocity through Doppler shift of the fluid as well as cross sectional multiphase fluid composition in pipe or tubing conduits. Multiple tomographic arrays in conjunction with correlation of sensed flow patterns in time provided determination of flow velocity as well as cross sectional multiphase fluid composition. The tomographic arrays may be arranged in a skewed or slanted plane to measure velocity fluctuations downstream of a vortex shedding device where the period and amplitude of the fluctuations is correlated with the mass flow of the fluid. Additionally, the tomographic arrays provide the relative composition of the multiphase fluid. The multiple arrays together with correlation to determine velocity fluctuations downstream of a vortex shedding device where the period and amplitude of the fluctuations is correlated with the mass flow of the fluid.

  • Publication number: 20160209542
Abstract: Systems and methods for determining characteristics of a fluid in a subterranean well include providing a production pipe extending into the subterranean well to convey the fluids from within the subterranean well to an earth's surface. An x-ray source is located on a first side of the production pipe. An x-ray beam is directed into the production pipe, into the fluids, and out of an opposite side of the production pipe as a resulting beam, with the x-ray source. A level of attenuation of the resulting beam is detected with an attenuation detector located on an opposite side of the production pipe. A fluorescence spectra of the resulting beam is detected with a scattered fluorescence detector located on the opposite side of the production pipe. A fluorescence peak of the resulting beam is detected with a peak fluorescence detector located on the opposite side of the production pipe.

  • Publication number: 20160102524
Abstract: A well system for producing fluids from a well that intersects a subterranean formation where the well system includes an inflow control device for providing a continuous rate of fluid flow. The inflow control device is formed so that the pressure drop of the fluid per unit length remains substantially constant along the length of the well. The inflow control device has an inner diameter that increases at a constant rate with distance from the bottom of the well. Multiple inflow control devices are coupled together in series to form an inflow control system in the well, and wherein the inner diameter of the inflow control system uniformly increases with distance from the bottom of the well.

  • Publication number: 20150276447
Abstract: Multiphase flow regimes in downhole or surface flow lines are made identifiable by forming images of the flow based on data obtained by flow regime metering of the flow. The flow regime metering data are gathered and processed in a format in which it can be subjected to face recognition processing of the type used for recognition of the faces of persons, and also to Bayesian classification techniques. Identification capabilities are particularly enhanced in flow regimes where gas bubbles or large amounts of free gas cause clutter and multiple reflections in the metering data.

  • Publication number: 20150027507
Abstract: Systems and methods of generating power in a wellbore extending through a subterranean formation are described. A swirling flow of pressurized fluid is passed through a vortex tube to generate a temperature differential between first and second outlets of the vortex tube. The temperature differential is applied to a thermoelectric generator configured to convert the temperature differential into a voltage. The thermoelectric generator produces electrical power that is transmittable to down-hole tools within the wellbore such as an inflow control valve.

  • Publication number: 20140198617
Abstract: A system and method for downhole data communication using an infrasound wave generator and receivers. The infrasound waves have a low frequency and a wavelength that is much larger than the transverse dimensions of the well. When the infrasound waves are directed down the well, the well will act as a wave guide for low frequency excitations. The receivers are operatively connected to inflow valves and other downhole equipment, and receive the infrasound waves. If the waves are of a predetermined frequency, the receivers command the valves to open or close, or otherwise control downhole equipment. The infrasound waves can also be used to probe well geometry and to identify fluid properties within the well.
