  • Publication number: 20110094471
Abstract: A method and an engine are disclosed for determining an amount of fuel in the engine oil. Such information can be used to recommend an oil change and to estimate a fraction of biodiesel in the fuel supplied to the engine. According to one embodiment, actual oil volume in the oil pan is based on a signal from a level sensor in the oil and a theoretical oil volume is determined based on initial oil volume and fuel entering the oil in the oil pan, fuel leaving the oil pan due to evaporation, and oil being consumed in the combustion chamber. Based on the difference between the actual and theoretical oil volumes, a proportion of biodiesel can be determined and transmitted to an engine control system.

  • Publication number: 20110056265
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a system and method for identifying whether a difference between measured lambda and computed lambda, based on mass air flow and mass fuel flow, is due to a drift in fuel metering or a drift in air metering. The determination is based on also measuring exhaust gas NOx using a NOx sensor. By comparing the measured NOx to modeled NOx, drift can be attributed appropriately to the air flow measurement and/or the fuel flow measurement. Appropriate correction in the calibration can be undertaken to overcome sensor drift and/or drift in the fuel injector/fuel system flow characteristics.

  • Publication number: 20100199643
Abstract: The invention relates to an exhaust gas purification system (1) for exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine, in particular from a diesel engine, said system being arranged in an exhaust tract (2) which has a primary exhaust gas treatment system (22) and an inlet line (3) with a metering device (19). In order to achieve higher efficiency in nitrogen conversion, it is proposed that the inlet line (3) together with the metering device (19) be arranged downstream of the exhaust gas treatment system (22) and that the inlet line (3) be divided downstream by the metering device (19) into two catalyst lines (13) which lead the exhaust gas stream from the internal combustion engine in each case to a catalyst element (6, 7), the exhaust gas stream being steerable into the first catalyst element (6) or the second catalyst element (7) by means of a control valve (14).

  • Patent number: 6574956
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for interrupting the regeneration of a particulate filter in the exhaust gas system of a diesel engine to protect the filter against destructive overheating. In this case, an electronic control unit calculates a desired mass air mass flow rate (MAFdes) based on engine speed (n), fuel supply (Fq) to the engine, and air/fuel ratio (A/Fdes). A mass air flow rate regulator controls the position of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve as a function of the difference between the desired mass air mass flow rate (MAFdes) and the measured mass air flow rate (MAFmes). An intake manifold absolute pressure controller adjusts the position of an intake throttle valve as a function of the difference between the measured intake manifold absolute pressure (MAPmes) and the modified intake manifold absolute pressure (MAPmod). MAPmod is determined by a coordination module, based on the mass air flow rate error and other parameters.
