  • Publication number: 20030190894
Abstract: A method is disclosed for determining whether to transmit from a first unit to a second unit, where the transmission is one of a first type and a second type. In the method, a signal from the second unit is received at the first unit, and the strength of the signal as received at the first unit is measured. A determination is made of whether the transmission is of the first type or the second type, and a first threshold is selected if the transmission is of the first type, or else a second threshold is selected if the transmission is of the second type. The measured signal strength is then compared to the selected threshold, and the transmission proceeds only if the measured signal strength exceeds the selected threshold.

  • Patent number: 6149136
Abstract: A liquid distributor for a packed liquid-vapor contact column includes a header tank; a liquid distribution plate having vapor riser passages and a multiplicity of discrete reservoir cells each having an aperture for flow of liquid therefrom into the column; and conduits for feeding liquid from the header tank into each cell. The liquid distribution plate preferably has a uniform criss-cross structure with alternating vapor riser passages and reservoir cells of identical shape and size. The conduits may have two or more sections each feeding a discrete group of reservoir cells from a location of the header tank at an elevation spaced from that of the other section(s). The distributor compensates for column sway or tilt when mounted on, for example, a ship.

  • Patent number: 6147647
Abstract: A dielectric resonator antenna having a resonator formed from a dielectric material mounted on a ground plane. The ground plane is formed from a conductive material. First and second probes are electrically coupled to the resonator for providing first and second signals, respectively, to or receiving from the resonator. The first and second probes are spaced apart from each other. The first and second probes are formed of conductive strips that are electrically connected to the perimeter of the resonator and are substantially orthogonal with respect to the ground plane. The first and second signals have equal amplitude, but 90 degrees phase difference with respect to each other, to produce a circularly polarized radiation pattern. A dual band antenna can be constructed by positioning and connecting two dielectric resonator antennas together. Each resonator in the dual band configuration resonates at a particular frequency, thereby providing dual band operation.

  • Patent number: 5855650
Abstract: In the purification of air to remove water and carbon dioxide and other contaminants prior to cryogenic separation of oxygen and nitrogen, water and carbon dioxide are adsorbed on a solid adsorbent and are periodically desorbed to regenerate the adsorbent by the passing of a heated regenerating gas such that the quantity of heat added to the regenerating gas to produce desorption is no more than 90 percent of the heat of adsorption liberated during the adsorption of the water and carbon dioxide. The process is applicable to removing other contaminants from other gas streams also.

  • Patent number: 5840099
Abstract: A process is set forth for the selective removal of water, CO.sub.2, ethane and C.sub.3 + hydrocarbons from gas streams, particularly a natural gas stream comprising primarily methane. The process comprises contacting the gas stream with an adsorbent material consisting exclusively of one or more compounds which are basic (i.e. compounds which, when contacted with a pH neutral aqueous solution, cause such solution to have a pH greater than 7.0) and which are mesoporous (i.e. compounds which have moderately small pores providing a surface area less than 500 m.sup.2 /g). The key to the present invention is the use of a single homogenous adsorbent without sacrificing performance. Typical mesoporous adsorbents which are useful in the present invention include zinc oxide, magnesium oxide and, in particular, activated alumina.

  • Patent number: 5828348
Abstract: A dual-band octafilar helix antenna operational at two frequencies, while maintaining a relatively small package size. The dual-band octafilar antenna is manufactured by disposing radiators and a feed network onto a flexible substrate and forming the substrate into a cylindrical shape to obtain the helical configuration. The dual-band octafilar helix antenna includes four active radiators which are matched to a first frequency and disposed on a radiator portion of the flexible substrate. Four additional radiators, which may be either passive or active radiators, are matched to a second frequency, are also disposed on the radiator portion of the substrate and interleaved with the active radiators. At least one feed network is provided on a feed portion of the substrate that provides 0.degree., 90.degree., 180.degree., and 270.degree. signals to active radiators.
