  • Publication number: 20080233955
Abstract: Techniques for performing searches by a user equipment (UE) are described. The UE may camp on a serving cell for a first radio access technology (RAT) (e.g., GSM) and may periodically perform searches for a second RAT (e.g., WCDMA). In an aspect, the UE may vary the rate of searches for the second RAT based on received signal levels for the first and second RATs. The UE may determine a difference between the received signal levels for the two RATs, compare the difference against at least one threshold, and select a search rate associated with a range within which the difference falls as the rate of searches for the second RAT. In another aspect, the UE may control certain aspects of searches (e.g., determine whether or not to perform searches or the rate of searches) for the second RAT by considering the frequency bands for the two RATs.

  • Publication number: 20080207228
Abstract: An apparatus and method for reducing call setup time of a wireless communication device including determining an uplink interference information, including the uplink interference information in a paging message to be sent on a Common Control Channel and sending the paging message on the Common Control Channel. In one aspect, the paging message is received, the uplink interference information from the received paging message is obtained, and a RRC connection request message is sent in response to the received paging message.

  • Publication number: 20080194287
Abstract: A method and apparatus for cell change order including issuing or receiving a cell change order message to find a target cell in a network with no compressed mode measurement, performing a power scan on the network to find a suitable cell if the target cell is not found, and camping on the suitable cell if found. In one aspect, the network is a 2G network. In yet another aspect, the network is a GSM network.

  • Publication number: 20080182571
Abstract: An apparatus and method for reducing call setup time of a wireless communication device including measuring paging intensity, and adjusting SIB7 or SIB14 repetition period based on the measured paging intensity to reduce call setup time. In one aspect, a paging intensity threshold is determined based on the measured paging intensity, and the paging intensity threshold is used to adjust the SIB7 or SIB14 repetition period.

  • Publication number: 20080182577
Abstract: An apparatus and method for reducing call setup time of a wireless communication device including determining empty slots on a Common Control Channel where no SIB blocks or MIB blocks are scheduled therein and scheduling SIB7 or SIB 14 blocks in the empty slots to reduce call setup time. In one aspect, the uplink interference level contained in the SIB7 or SIB14 block is piggy-backed on SIB blocks other than SIB7 or SIB14 blocks.

  • Publication number: 20080170526
Abstract: An apparatus and method for extending the standby battery life of a wireless device by reading scheduling information to determine the time when the wireless device should be in the wake-up state to read system information, and going back to the sleep state until the start of the transmission of a new SIB broadcast cycle as determined based on the scheduling information.

  • Publication number: 20080014941
Abstract: Methods, apparatus, processors and computer readable medium for inter-radio access technology (RAT) handover are provided that incorporate a soft-decision making process. By implementing configurable functions, soft-decision making allows for handover measurement limits to fall within a prescribed acceptable range and for the totality of the handover measurements to be used in making a final decision on inter-RAT handover. Thus, the currently described aspects provide for more flexible handover decision-making and better utilization of network radio resources. Further, in some instances, the currently described aspects may provide for the weighting of handover measurements, thereby allowing network administrators to place more or less emphasis on a selected handover measurement and, thus, better manage the handover process.

  • Publication number: 20070173254
Abstract: Cell reselection comprises monitoring a first indicator indicative of a signaling level of the serving cell, and monitoring second indicators, each indicative of a signaling level of one of plural potential target cells. A timer associated with a potential target cell is initiated when the respective second indicator indicates that the signaling level of the potential target cell is better than the signaling level of the serving cell. Each timer has an associated expiry, and, if at least one timer has been initiated by the expiry of another initiated timer, then, after delaying for an additional period after at least the first timer has expired, a target cell is selected from the potential target cells. The target cell is selected that has a second indicator which indicates that the signaling level of the respective target cell is better than the signaling level of the serving cell.

  • Publication number: 20070037601
Abstract: A terminal obtains a monitored set containing GSM neighbor cells and/or UMTS neighbor cells. The terminal operates in a compressed mode and obtains from a UMTS network at least two transmission gap pattern sequences for different measurement purposes, e.g., for “GSM carrier RSSI measurements” (GAP1), “GSM initial BSIC identification” (GAP2), and “GSM BSIC re-confirmation” (GAP3). The terminal makes RSSI measurements for the GSM cells using multiple transmission gap pattern sequences, e.g., using GAP1, GAP2 and GAP3. The terminal identifies the BSIC for at least one GSM cell by (1) detecting the tone on the FCCH using multiple transmission gap pattern sequences, e.g., using GAP2 and GAP3, and (2) decoding the SCH using multiple transmission gap pattern sequences, e.g., using GAP2 and GAP3. The use of multiple transmission gap pattern sequences for RSSI measurement and BSIC identification allows the terminal to complete the cell measurements and send a report sooner, which may improve performance.
