  • Publication number: 20230245681
Abstract: A heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) head has a slider with a gas-bearing-surface (GBS). The slider supports a near-field transducer (NFT) and a main magnetic pole that has a step or recess in the NFT-facing surface near the GBS that contains plasmonic material. A thermal shunt is located between the NFT and the main pole to allow heat to be transferred away from the optical spot generated by the NFT. The NFT-facing surface of the main pole that is recessed from the step away from the GBS is in contact with the thermal shunt, and the thermal shunt is in contact with the plasmonic material in the step in the back region recessed from the GBS, so there is no increase in the spacing between the NFT and a large portion of the main pole.

  • Patent number: 11651791
Abstract: A heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) head for recording data in data tracks of a HAMR disk has a gas-bearing slider that supports a near-field transducer (NFT) and a main magnetic pole formed of two layers. The first main pole layer has a cross-track width at the slider's gas-bearing surface (GBS) that tapers down in the direction towards the NFT where the optical spot is formed. The second main pole layer is located away from the NFT and has a substantially wider cross-track width than the first main pole layer so as to provide sufficient magnetic field for writing. Layers of heat sink material are located on the sloped cross-track sides of the tapered first main pole layer to reduce the temperature and thus the likelihood of oxidation of the main pole layers.

  • Patent number: 11557314
Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to magnetic recording systems, and more particularly to a magnetic recording system with a current-assisted write head. The write head comprises a main pole, a trailing shield disposed above the main pole, a trailing gap disposed between the main pole and the trailing shield, a side shield surrounding three sides of the main pole, the side shield being in contact with and disposed below the trailing shield and the trailing gap, and a side gap disposed between the side shield and each of the three sides of the main pole. The side gap comprises a non-magnetic electrically-conducting material to dissipate heat away from the main pole, lowering the resistance and temperature rise due to heating. The trailing gap may further comprise a non-magnetic electrically-conducting material. The write head may have a two terminal or three terminal connection configuration.

  • Patent number: 11508401
Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to a magnetic recording head of a magnetic recording device that facilitates generating a downtrack magnetic bias field to enhance writing. During magnetic writing using the magnetic recording head, a bias current is directed in a cross-track direction on the trailing side of the main pole. Bias current flowing in the cross-track direction on a leading side of the main pole is reduced or eliminated. The bias current flowing in the cross-track direction on the trailing side of the main pole facilitates generating a magnetic field in a downtrack direction. The magnetic field in the downtrack direction is a bias field generated using the bias current. The magnetic bias field in the downtrack direction facilitates enhanced writing performance and increased areal density capability (ADC) for magnetic recording.

  • Publication number: 20220358959
Abstract: The present disclosure generally relates to data storage devices, and more specifically, to a magnetic media drive employing a magnetic recording head. The head includes a main pole, a trailing shield, and a MAMR stack including at least one magnetic layer. The magnetic layer has a surface facing the main pole, and the surface has a first side at a media facing surface (MFS) and a second side opposite the first side. The length of the second side is substantially less than the length of the first side. By reducing the length of the second side, the area to be switched at a location recessed from the MFS is reduced as a current flowing from the main pole to the trailing shield or from the trailing shield to the main pole. With the reduced area of the magnetic layer, the overall switch time of the magnetic layer is decreased.

  • Patent number: 11323367
Abstract: A method, apparatus and system for transferring data from an apparatus called multi-protocol gateway in a network seamlessly that operates using a particular protocol, to another device that is either in the same network or outside operating in a totally different protocol is described. Today, to accomplish this requires external units, one per technology. For example, for supporting both WiFi and WiMAX devices today, we would require a WiFi access point, a WiMAX base station and a router. We provide plug-ins that would handle multiple protocols within the same gateway, to cater to devices that operate in those protocols. The apparatus translates between various protocols in the back end making it inexpensive and portable. The unit is scalable, grows with technology, and acts as a gateway to a local network. The device can be configured to address Quality of Service, Priority between technologies and fault-tolerance through management layer.

  • Publication number: 20210336560
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and an actuator system for determining and applying a voltage to a piezoelectric actuator (PEA) to achieve a given setpoint displacement. The method involves determining a relation dcal(V) between a PEA displacement measure (d) and voltage (V) and a relation ttcal(V) between transition time (tt) and voltage and combining the determined relations to calculate a relation d(tt) between the displacement measure and transition time during an initial calibration procedure. This relation is characteristic for the PEA, and by determining a new relation ttnew(V) after repeated biasing of the PEA, a compensated relation dc(V) can be calculated by substituting ttnew(V) in the calculated d(tt). The compensated relation dc(V) compensates for piezo creep effects due to the wear and can be used to determine the voltage to be applied directly, or be used in other compensation algorithms.

  • Patent number: 11159852
Abstract: Dynamic ad insertion in cloud-based video recorded (cDVR) content is provided. A partially or fully recorded cDVR asset may be associated with a corresponding reference asset, such as a video-on-demand (VOD) catalog copy of a program. The cDVR asset and reference asset may be associated via a common identifier, such as a TMS or Gracenotes® identifier. The reference asset may include metadata that specifies ad breaks and that can be applied to the cDVR asset and used to dynamically insert up-to-date and relevant ads into those ad breaks during playback. Additionally, an option may be provided to a user to stream the reference asset instead of the recorded asset. Further, another option may be provided to replace the user's cDVR asset with the reference asset. Accordingly, up-to-date and relevant ads can be dynamically inserted into the reference asset on playback, and less storage space is required for storing the recording.

  • Patent number: 11115723
Abstract: Linear content holds great value to consumers, and by delivering it to consumers on demand, service providers can improve the user experience for their consumers. A consumer requests linear on demand content by selecting channels and time ranges or content items, or bundles thereof, which the service provider broadcasts as linear content. The requested content is broadcast, and repackaged as an unbroken block of content for the consumer during the requested time range or the duration of the content item. By repackaging the linear on demand content, the service provider may provide greater options to consumers without significantly increasing the amount of bandwidth used in its network to deliver that content. Channel guides and viewing features are tailored for the requested content to further improve the user experience.
