  • Patent number: 11754260
Abstract: Lighting applications which are particularly difficult to light because of “non-standard” target areas (or otherwise) would benefit from advancements in lighting design. That being said, conventional wisdom in lighting design has practical limitations—conventional means of visors at/on lighting fixtures (i.e., local visoring) can only become so long to provide beam cutoff before becoming prohibitively heavy or costly, for example. Local visoring can only be pivoted so far before beam shift occurs (e.g., shifting the physical location of maximum candela or photometric center), as another example. Conventional wisdom can only buy so much cutoff and beam control before the overall lighting design is impacted—and so an alternative approach is warranted. One such alternative approach which relies upon a combination of remote visoring and local visoring is discussed; additional approaches are also discussed.

  • Publication number: 20230172121
Abstract: Grass and/or turf growth is impacted by a number of factors both above ground and below ground. For example, soil temperature, nutrient levels, water levels, oxygen, humidity, above ground temperature, wind, and light. With respect to just light, there are a host of factors which can impact everything from root depth to disease resistance of grass/turf. While sunlight and artificial light can produce swards which are suitable for initial use, shade and/or damage can negatively impact portions of grass/turf for which there are no commercially available solutions. Described herein are a method and apparatuses for addressing turf growth and/or repair, and in a manner that minimizes downtime.

  • Publication number: 20220416530
Abstract: Conventional GFCI-type technology typically relies solely on onsite control—for example, pushing a reset button physically located at the impacted circuit to clear a trip and resume operation. For simpler/lower voltage systems—such as outlets in a residence—this is not particularly labor-intensive or confusing. However, for large, complex, and/or high voltage systems—such as sports lighting systems with multiple circuits dozens of feet apart in locked enclosures—trying to perform the same task of pushing a reset button and clearing a trip is much more labor-intensive, and confusing not only in locating the impacted circuit, but in determining what happens next if pushing the reset button does not resume operation. Presented herein are remote control options for GFCIs which could be used in addition to, and not instead of, conventional GFCI-type functionality—or could provide remote-only reset function where a system has no onsite reset button.

  • Patent number: 11071177
Abstract: Methods, apparatus, and systems for illumination, including wide area lighting applications. In one embodiment, a method of illumination comprises: comparing metamers at a known and similar CCT with at least one metamer having a higher M/P or S/P ratio; selecting at least one of said metamers for improved perceived brightness; evaluating the selected metamer(s) for desired CCT and acceptable CRI; manufacturing a lighting apparatus which emits light of a given CCT having increased melanopic content compared to one or more extant metameric variations of the same or similar CCT; wherein said light has an acceptable CRI. The method can be applied in various apparatus and systems. In one example, the methods, apparatus, and systems can be used to illuminate a wide area target area with increased perceived brightness compared to typical similar lighting. In some cases, this allows energy savings and/or fewer lighting sources or fixtures than typical lighting.

  • Patent number: 10792762
Abstract: Disclosed herein are apparatus, methods, and techniques directed to the manufacturing of heat sinks; specifically the forming of heat sink fins which are joined to a base or substrate so to collectively form a heat sink. Said methods permit full penetration at weld joints between said heat sink fins and said base, and said apparatus permit implementation of improved heat sink manufacturing in a production setting; specifically, in the production of LED lighting fixtures.
