  • Publication number: 20180010772
Abstract: Precision lighting design is a subcategory of lighting design which benefits from a concerted, synergistic effort to improve beam control; sports lighting is one such example. Beam control is improved when all light directing and redirecting devices are considered together, and insomuch that adverse lighting effects are best avoided when considering how all the lighting fixtures in an array interact with one another. To that end, envisioned is a multi-part visoring (i.e., light redirecting) and optic (i.e., light directing) system designed with consideration towards how a fixture lives in a mounted space—how its photometric and physical presence affects other fixtures in or proximate said space—while demonstrating improved beam control over that which is available to general purpose (e.g., indoor residential) lighting.

  • Publication number: 20170354000
Abstract: Methods, apparatus, and systems for illumination, including wide area lighting applications. In one embodiment, a method of illumination comprises: comparing metamers at a known and similar CCT with at least one metamer having a higher M/P or S/P ratio; selecting at least one of said metamers for improved perceived brightness; evaluating the selected metamer(s) for desired CCT and acceptable CRI; manufacturing a lighting apparatus which emits light of a given CCT having increased melanopic content compared to one or more extant metameric variations of the same or similar CCT; wherein said light has an acceptable CRI. The method can be applied in various apparatus and systems. In one example, the methods, apparatus, and systems can be used to illuminate a wide area target area with increased perceived brightness compared to typical similar lighting. In some cases, this allows energy savings and/or less lighting sources or fixtures than typical lighting.

  • Patent number: 9807839
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and system for operating wide area lighting systems. Operating costs, as well as capital and installation costs, can be reduced by designing the lighting system for operation of individual light sources at a first “normal” operating power for a majority of the time but having the ability to boost or increase operating power for “boosted” or increased light output for the same light sources of the system for a minority of cumulative operating time of the light sources. “”In one aspect, performance data about the LED light sources is evaluated relative to whether or not the light sources will have a predicted life expectancy on the order of the entire lighting system life expectancy. Operating power levels for boosted and normal LED lumen outputs are selected to comport with predictably meeting or exceeding lighting system life expectancy.

  • Patent number: 9786251
Abstract: Discussed herein is the adequate lighting of a target area as viewed from one or more vantage points to one or more specifications for one or more situations, and in a manner that addresses glare; in particular, glare perception. Various apparatuses, methods, and systems are presented herein whereby glare thresholds are visually indicated. Said glare-indicating apparatus, methods, and/or systems are readily implemented using existing lighting design tools, adaptable in accordance with advances in glare science, and either avoid or overcome limitations of existing glare models. Said apparatuses, methods, and systems can be adapted for real-time evaluation of glare so to, for example, aid a lighting designer in vetting generated (i.e., virtual) lighting designs and identify retrofit options for existing lighting systems.

  • Patent number: 9706622
Abstract: Apparatus, method, and system for improving visibility of objects against a background. Background luminance is monitored for an event or condition. Upon sensing of the event or condition, uplighting is provided for one or more areas above a target area at a time and in a manner which increases visibility of the object against the background. In one example, the objects are sports balls and the background is sky, stadium, or sports field. Time and manner can include detection of an event indicative of a ball being in play or transition between daylight and nighttime, manner can include amount, color, or direction of up light.

  • Publication number: 20170191639
Abstract: Presented is a design of modular LED lighting fixture whereby the steps of light directing and light redirecting are independent, but cooperative, so to promote a compact fixture design with low effective projected area (EPA), good thermal properties, and a selectable degree of glare control. A lighting system employing a plurality of said fixtures is highly customizable yet has the potential to be pre-aimed and pre-assembled prior to shipping, which reduces the potential for installation error while preserving the customized nature of the fixtures.

  • Patent number: 9581303
Abstract: A lighting system is provided whereby long operating life can be reasonably ensured by taking into account requirements of the application, characteristics of the LEDs, characteristics of the fixture containing said LEDs, the desired number of operating hours, and—via developed relationships—taking an iterative approach to supplying power to the LEDs. Through the envisioned compensation methodology and effective luminaire design, a relatively constant light level can be assured for a predetermined number of operating hours (possibly longer); this is true even if operating conditions change, known behavior of LEDs proves untrue over untested period of time, or some other condition occurs which would otherwise cause end-of-life prematurely and prevent the system from meeting the desired number of operating hours.

  • Patent number: 9435517
Abstract: A lighting fixture is presented comprising a plurality of modular apparatuses wherein each modular apparatus comprises one or more light sources and one or more light directing or light redirecting devices. Methods of adjusting one or more components of said lighting fixture about one, two, or three axes are presented whereby the lighting needs of a target area—even one of complex shape—may be addressed and in a manner that promotes compact fixture design with low effective projected area (EPA) without sacrificing transmission efficiency of the light sources.

  • Patent number: 9402292
Abstract: A method, system, or apparatus for evaluating and/or improving illumination of a wide area target area or space above the same. Illumination of the area or space is evaluated relative to conventional illumination levels and spectral features. At least a portion of illumination is adjusted in some aspect of spectral profile to improve contrast between a target in the space or aspects of the target area or space. The adjusted illumination can be uplight, downlight, or both. Optionally, an object is launched to a known height above a lighting location, and the luminance from the object is read by a calibrated sensor, enabling verification of adequate uplighting.
