Patent number: 11607194Abstract: An ultrasound system includes a transducer array having three or more rows of transducer elements extending in the azimuth dimension and located adjacent to each other in the elevation dimension. The rows have different mechanical foci in the elevation dimension, with an inner row elevationally focused in the near field and outer rows elevationally focused in the far field. When the user is imaging a subject in the near field, the system beamformer transmits with the inner row with a near field elevation focus. When imaging in the far field a plurality of rows elevationally focused in the far field are used for transmission. When the user is imaging in the mid-range, the beamformer uses both the inner row and the plurality of outer rows to provide an extended mid-range elevation focus.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2019Date of Patent: March 21, 2023Assignee: KONINKLIJKE PHILIPS N.V.Inventors: Neil Owen, Changhong Hu

Patent number: 10426499Abstract: During shock wave therapy, a determination is made that a kidney stone has begun to fracture, and then a progress of its fragmentation is assessed. This determination can reduce the number of shock waves used to disintegrate kidney stones, and thereby reduce dose-dependent tissue damage. The identification of fracture is possible through the detection and analysis of resonant acoustic scattering, which is the radiation caused by reverberations within a stone particle that is struck by a shock wave. The scattering frequency can provide both an indication that the kidney stone has fragmented, and an indication of the relative sizes of the fragments. Related concepts employ displacement measurements of kidney stones/fragments to provide both an indication that the kidney stone has fragmented, and an indication of the relative sizes of the fragments. Such techniques can be combined with vibro-acoustography based gating that better targets the stone.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 2013Date of Patent: October 1, 2019Assignee: University of WashingtonInventors: Neil Owen, Michael Bailey, Oleg Sapozhinikov

Publication number: 20180161011Abstract: An ultrasonic transducer array probe (10) for shear wave imaging has a number of transducer elements which exceeds the number of transmit channels of a shear wave diagnostic imaging system. The probe includes a switch matrix or multiplexer (60) which selectively couples channels of the transmit beamformer (18) to the transducer elements of multiple shear wave apertures of the array. When the transmit beamformer is actuated, a plurality of push pulses are transmitted simultaneously to initiate shear waves in a subject.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 31, 2016Publication date: June 14, 2018Inventors: NEIL OWEN, VIJAY THAKUR SHAMDASANI, HARRY AMON KUNKEL, SAMUEL RAYMOND PETERS

Publication number: 20180156904Abstract: An ultrasound system drives the elements of an ultrasound probe with asymmetric transmit signals which reinforce poling of the probe transducer. The use of asymmetric transmit signals enables a transducer element to withstand a significantly higher RF transmit voltage without degradation, which in turn enables higher acoustic output and improved reliability. This is particularly beneficial with single crystal transducer material when used to generate high energy pressure waves of long duration such as shear wave push pulses.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 28, 2016Publication date: June 7, 2018Inventors: NEIL OWEN, HARRY AMON KUNKEL
