Publication number: 20190210595Abstract: A method and system enabling a process for preventing a vehicular accident is provided. The method includes continuously monitoring vehicular impact conditions associated with a vehicle in motion. In response, an imminent impact event associated with the vehicle in motion and an external object is detected and a surface of a roadway below the vehicle in motion is scanned by sensors of the vehicle. Results of the scanning indicate that the roadway surface is safe for deployment of a destructive friction based braking mechanism of the vehicle. The destructive friction based braking mechanism is deployed with respect to a first braking force threshold and it is determined if rate of speed decrease exceeds a specified speed decrease threshold.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 9, 2018Publication date: July 11, 2019Inventors: Nixon Cheaz, Anthony Diaz, Michael E. Head, Jordana H. Kerr, Rohit Shetty

Publication number: 20190132530Abstract: Detection of an image obstruction is facilitated by, in part, obtaining multiple frames of an image being captured via an imaging device, and confirming movement of the imaging device between the multiple frames. The movement causes perspective shifting of the image between frames and the perspective shifting results in one or more objects of the image shifting between frames. The detection process determines whether an edge object within the multiple frames does not shift in a manner corresponding to the one or more objects between the multiple frames, and based, at least in part, on determining that the edge object does not shift in the corresponding manner to the one or more objects, identifying the edge object as an image obstruction. Presence of the identified image obstruction is signaled to facilitate corrective action being taken.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 26, 2017Publication date: May 2, 2019Inventors: Nixon CHEAZ, Anthony DIAZ, Rohit SHETTY, Richard A. Publication number: 20170139886Abstract: Some examples described are directed to operations performed by a processor of a computer system to receive text data corresponding to a piece of text (e.g., a text string) displayable via a display device. The processor can further perform operations to determine, based on evaluation of the text data using text-filtering logic, that a revision condition exists for at least a portion of the piece of text. The processor can further perform operations to, in response to determination that the revision condition exists, determine, for a display data set corresponding to the piece of text, to either not display the at least the portion of the piece of text or display a modified form of the at least the portion of the piece of text. The processor can further perform operations to, present, via the display device, a display (e.g., a graphical-user-interface object) corresponding to the display data set.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 26, 2017Publication date: May 18, 2017Inventors: Diane C. Patent number: 9276889Abstract: A collaboration server determines a response to a posting on a communication forum. The collaboration server determines whether or not to convey an email notification to a posting user via email based upon a distance threshold established for email notifications. The distance threshold is an integer value. The collaboration server calculates a current distance between the response and the posting, where the current distance represents a quantity of responses to the posting from forum participants that have occurred without a new response from the posting user being submitted to the communication forum. Responsive to the current distance being less than the distance threshold, an email is conveyed to an email account of the posting user informing the posting user of the response. Otherwise, no email is conveyed.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 2013Date of Patent: March 1, 2016Assignee: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Diane C. Chalmers, Nixon Cheaz, David M. Patent number: 8856771Abstract: A firmware or software update, patch, or upgrade image is authenticated by forcing its checksum to match a pre-determined value. The pre-determined value is known by a consumer electronic device in advance of propagating the image for installation. Upon propagation, the device determines a checksum value of the received imaged, and compares the checksum value to the pre-determined expected authenticity value. If they match, the image is installed. In an optional feature, the image is executed by the device and modifies the pre-determined checksum value to a next value, which is also shared or known by the image server. In this variation, no two images have the same expected value, and unauthorized images may be rejected for installation.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 2011Date of Patent: October 7, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Diane Christine Chalmers, Nixon Cheaz, David Michael Stecher
